You know, a vacationing couple went off the side of the second switchback from the top a few years back in their rented Jeep universal, you can google some pics of the wreck they died in. One thing the video can't show is just how steep the slope is in some sections of the road and how slippery the rock can be, or how, sometimes, a piece of it breaks away and slides down the mountain.
It was made for miner's mules, not trucks. If you aren't careful on this road, you will die.
@smithriverdude Uh-oh, sounds like somebody's been doing Drano shots again. Oh, wait, I get it, you meant a Tonka fire truck, right? OK, that explains it then. My apologies.
Sasktank:, Linguini85:, You guys ever driven this road? If you haven't, then shut up.....besides, this wife, or girlfriend seems pretty in tune with what to expect and look for and he welcomes her help in most situations in this video. Point being, you sound like testosterone closet fag males if at best.
Big trucks can do it, If you have skills and patience in the switch backs. I did it in a 3/4 Dodge Ram diesel, standard trans, with a Hallmark Leveta camper on it. Piece of Cake !
LOL these people say the funniest things ever... "where the heck does the trail go?" "those are some rocky rocks" "watch you dont go off the edge here" "just dont go over the edge" okay captain obvious.. im suprised that toyota made it out of the whole foods parking lot and that far onto a trail.. when you break it atleast go buy a real truck...
I have watched a lot of viedos but yours is one that has the most amazing background and steepest grades that i have seen so far. Thankyou for a great viedo.
Wow lots of argueing over something but a jeep makeing it down the pass. The fact of the matter is lots of other vehicles have made it down the pass in really nice weather. It doesnt have to be a great off road vehicle, just good brakes and a descent turning radius. It's when conditions aren't good or you have to climb something that you need a jeep.
@3Mudbone1 All i can say is that i wish you all the very best of luck.......that being said , i think anyone including myself is a damn fool to try that in anything longer than a jeep or four runner type vehicle. If you do decide to try it make sure you take video and post it if you and the truck survive.
I am confident that the search and rescue team will be glad to help you down or pick up the pieces at the bottom.
@death85e I have been four wheeling in Colorado since when the only people who really had four wheel drive vehicles were ranchers, loggers, farmers, hunters and fishermen. Now every yuppie and their brother has a 4X4 and most are the first ones to gho in the ditch on a snowy day. My truck is one of the best nequipped trucks and nicest trucks on the road. Winches front AND rear, etc. etc. etc.
@3Mudbone1 Understood....very well actually and i apologize to you if i offended you....I am all to use to people that decide that since they have 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive they can go anywhere and do anything in them...I was born and raised in Colorado and all to often now days i see way to many transplants from Cali that try things they were never equipped to do or had the brains to think through before they did it.
@3Mudbone1 The shorter, the better on those switchbacks. An old, small Willey's Jeep is good, a 4-wheeler better but watch the speed with those bouncy tires. People have actually abandoned their vehicles on this road and walked to town to hire a local to drive it down. Drive it in your long-bed and post the video.
Yes, the stretch into Telluride is a one-way pass. And the 4Runner has an extremely tight turning radius. Something around 19'. I did a quick search and Jeep Wranglers are something around 39'. Seems impossible but I know that our 4Runner turns extremely tight.
yes they made it in something not a jeep, but alot of people dont know how good toyota suv's handle, 4runners come with locking diffs, traction control, and the new ones come with crawl feature, and disconnecting swaybars.
I am not sure what kind of vehicle you are driving exactly, but it is pretty impressive that you made it without a jeep. Me and my brother took engineer pass in a jeep rubio, or what ever it is called, and it really kicked my ass, cause of the bumpy riede. Aparently you have some kind of skill for the adventure. Keep up the good work, keep it safe, and have fun. God bless you.
Didn't any one tell those people there is a perfectly good road between ouray and telluride? J/K .."Oh look honey, there is Telluride." I would have wet 12 depends by that time, and putting on another one. OMG ... thanks for posting this!!
look fucker if its five months ago get the hell off peoples ass about it. I know which is better on small trails like that. For one thing that one really shouldn't be on that trail. I might have been doing this shit for around 19 years with my granddad and he is 72 now so i really would say that to some who has done trail riding longer than you might have. but fail much what the fuck does that mean. if your talking about ford? hell no its dead now but wasn't when i wrote that.
You can go back to the first gen of both vehicles and a 4Runner has ALWAYS had a shorter wheelbase.
You are only 19 years old so while you are an expert at foul language you are no expert on vehicles. LOTS of vehicles besides your personal favorites have made it up that Black Bear Pass just fine.

something a lot smaller than that one. Damn big ass thing. I would rather have a ranger sized truck not something so damn big.
Devinsplace 2 years ago
The liberty, both the first and generation, have a shorter wheelbase than any ranger to date, not to mention a smaller turning circle. Fail much?
cairnsguy22 2 years ago
I take that back, he's in his 4 runner, not his Liberty, which has an even shorter wheelbase than the Liberty, so now even moreso.
