The Yellow Train Cars of New Castle

Yeah I love trains but even I disagree with what the railroad did here. These cars were meant to carry SUV's. I know that the cars were parked there because the economy got bad and not many people were buying SUV's. Even still, I think they should've just scrapped those cars instead of parking them all over New Castle. They could just build new ones when or if the Economy bounces back.

I live in New Castle, I love this town with all my heart, always will. I hated those trains, ugly things. People used to go in there to do drugs, hide from police and other stuff, they are gone now! This place looks better without them.

Good work, the people in the town of New castle deserve better then to let their city become a parking lot for railroad companies. I don't get why so many people are angry that you are making this public, I guess they live in a fantasy world. Guess what, this is an eyesore and when I visited recently with a friend who had never been here he told me how ugly New Castle was with "all those yellow trains everywhere." Sad.

You're like people who build houses next to the highway for the cheap land then petition the local and state government to put up soundwalls. Are the idle cars really any worse than the noise the active trains made? These are hard times for alot of people and if your biggest problem is idle railroad cars, then consider yourself lucky. Suggestions: Open a factory in your town? Have your town buy the tracks? Move away? It's probably easier to just complain.

I love trains and would love to be able to see Auto Carriers, tank cars, etc.. on a daily basis. Heck I've railfanned in all type of environments. I lived by the track (active) for over 20 years and enjoyed seeing the trains go by. I would imagine where they had been and where they were going. These are not going anywhere. They have set idle for over a year. I have nothing against trains. I gave my father framed photos a friend took of the highest elevated track in Indiana for Christmas. They hang over his desk at home. So you see this is not about the trains, but the man who thinks he can take advantage of an entire town.

Well there are bigger things to worry about then railcars sitting on tracks that belong to the railroad. I line near an Air Force base and have planes coming in and out non stop but you dont see me complaining about it. Maybe you and all the others should do something to get the economy moving and then you will see the cars disapear, Driving around being a NIMBY helps no one. Said the guy with all the train videos on his channel. Look this is not about the trains, this is about the train cars being left in a residential area. I lived by the train tracks for over 20 years and it never bothered me. We could see them from our front porch. I even have the little book so we could see what they were hauling. I don't have anything against trains. I do object to these cars being left on an abandoned line, in a residential area, and using my tax dollars to guard them.

And another thing. Who's fault is it that the railroads are mostly abandoned? We used to have six lines run through this county. now there are only two. Why is that? Maybe someone like you who works for a railroad can tell me? At a time when we could use the railroads more than ever, because they do a better job of moving freight across the Country, where are they? Most of the lines are now abandoned and have been turned into bike trails. So what happened?

The reasons are simple. If a factory closes down and used rail service and there is nothing else on the line then the line gets abandoned. With jobs moving overseas and Mexico this is the result. This is part of the problem of why the country is in such a mess right now. You have to understand that a line that is used has to be maintained and that costs money. If there was a CO. at the end of the line the cars are sitting on and they wanted rail service then the cars wouldnt be there.

Also the factory has to be large enough to generate revenue for the RR as a Co. that would get 1 car a month wouldnt justify several miles of track to be maintained. If you look back to the 50's the RR's would have many customers on lines and slowly they vanished. The RR i work for had around 30 customers back in the day for a 60 mile stretch of track and now there are 3 so that should say something 5 year ago there were 7. Things are changing and its not the RR's as they want the customers.

A good example is all the steel mills that use to be in the US around OH and PA. Most are shut down and being torn down. Not only has this eliminated many jobs but hurt the RR's as well. Now with the Auto industry in shambles you have autoracks stored everywhere. You should see the line between Albany and Buffalo as cars are stored along the entire route which is over 300 miles long. Just about every side track has cars on it being stored. Also the railroad storing the cars doesnt own them.

And I have seen many railroads abandoned as I live in New England and you can see how much is now gone. Rail service is a joke and from what it use to be and most of the mills and factorys are long gone closing up because its cheaper to manufacture items out of the country. Lumber and newspring come from canada, and most trains are empty going back os what does that say. Its only going to get worse for the next few years before it gets better. Pretty soon stored cars will be the least of worries

Hopefully the economy will turn around and they can put these back into use. But in the mean time, they don't have any choice that I know of. Do you expect them to run them off into the ocean? They have to keep the tracks clear for the trains that are still running. Maybe they could run them down South and see if anyone wants to turn them into homes. Actually they do have a choice. The owner of this line owns miles of track out in the country where they could be stored. He is getting free police protection for these cars by storing them in the city. Railroads don't pay property taxes on railroad right of way in Indiana so they contribute nothing to the tax base and they use city services. This track is a dead end track and is only used for this purpose. There were no trains on these tracks for years because it is partially abandoned.

Good point. It's too bad we've lost so much train service in this country. In Kansas, where I grew up, there use to be many train tracks, but slowly they are disappearing. The grain industry switched to trucks for transport. Now they have to put excess grain on the ground because their aren't empty train cars to take up the excess.

I am A young citizen of New Castle living around the area filmed, particularly in the Sunnyside Area. I noticed your comment about being green, and this is my solution. After hearing about recycling paper, aluminium and plastics at school, shouldn't we be able to do the same things with these nuisances? I think we should melt them down and assign them to a new job they're actually good at.

I think that is a great idea ! They should be recycled if they are no longer needed. I am not sure if these have reached their useable lifespan.
