  • Wow, this song is a classic for sure; can never get tired of such a great performance and song... it's simply great!!!

  • When the hell will 'Too Much World' be out?

  • @acrovader he has another album coming out? I hope soon :)

  • I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG FOR YEARS!!!!!!

  • God, I love that short ascending guitar solo Jason does midway into the song! Simple, yet brilliant.

  • Yeah, great tune. Wish his other songs were this good.

  • @muncher64

Yeah, I feel your pain. On the other hand, I have a lot of favorites whose output includes brilliant gems among a cesspool of turds. It's hard to get it right 11 out of 11 times.

One intriguing thing about Eric Matthews, I think, is that the lyrics must drive some people bats (pretentious) and thoroughly beguile others.

  • I remember going to my science class when I was a junior stoned out of my mind, had my headphones on & this song came on the radio. This tune went VERY well with my high lol.

  • Sensational stuff. Also, if you haven't heard his song 'Radio Boy' - then do!

  • I remember this tune !

  • Quite possibly the greatest song in the world.

  • Taylor Hawkins :D

  • According to Wikipedia, this guy was born in Compton.

    Huuuuuuh?

  • @mikedrud LOL!!!

  • is this a Docker's commercial??

  • Christ, this is good.

It's so frustrating that people like Eric (and my favourite, XTC) struggle to find a larger audience. They've produced such incredible work - it deserves to be heard by everyone.

    What's wrong with people? GAAAAAAH!

  • Only 17,000 views, such a crime. Can only echo other long ago comments - this song IS a masterpiece, largely unheralded, and one that you can't hear often enough. A desert island disc song.

  • i remember this song from blender cd-rom magazine back in '95 that trumpet has stayed in my head years and years and here i am now watching the video

    i miss good music.

  • decades of rockers using synthesizers to imitate fanfare; this is the real thing.

    Thank you, SubPop. Chops. Whole.

    Thank you, SubPop.

  • He's the modern day equivalent of the '60s band the Left Banke, who also incorporated classical elements into their sound (though Eric is more lyrically cryptic). Also, if you look up Del Shannon's 1968 song "Gemini" on YouTube, you'll recognize it as a sort of precursor of what Eric does in terms of song structure (though I doubt Eric's ever heard it--I suspect it's more of an interesting coincidence).

  • Genius.

  • There are some influences that are quite old and some ahead of their time. This is great work.

  • majestic tune

  • incredible song. sort of has some 'forever changes'/'pet sounds' vibe w/ more guitar....

  • This is an amazing video, I love the production... it's great! I miss the era of music videos. Love the SONG & ARRANAGEMENT no doubt!!! Mattie from the NW.

  • I love this song. I'd be interested to know how Eric Matthews ended up on Sub Pop.

  • magic

  • 1-hit wonder? But this is a truly great piece of work.

  • not a hit...but all his shit, to this day now that he is finally back, is great.

  • Can you imagine a group made up of Eric, Jason, and Roger Manning(Jellyfish)- WOW!!! The harmonies alone would be would be crazy!

  • right on

  • @popnutty This is very Jellyfish. A little more monotone in the melody and delivery, but Beatlesque and grand just the same

  • @careypeak23:) I couldn't agree more! It's subtle but the similarities are there nonetheless (jason?maybe).... on a side note though quite the opposite in terms of mood. Still, i love Eric but I'll take the more balanced approach of Jellyfish any day of the week!!

  • @popnutty Yup, I agree however, I think Jason Falkner contributed to this album, as well as, the followup "The Lateness of the Hour"...another fine album.

  • @osiruskat ;> Absolutely! Yes, he was on both albums as was many other musicians but he did add a very nice touch to Eric's music! However, I might add, Eric did quite well on his own later on..IMO. It's still Eric Matthews,,know what I mean?

  • Just a little bit of Sgt. Pepper in there :-)

And Yes, that is Jason Falkner on bass

This song itself is a freakin masterpiece!

Now go listen to The Gray's, Very Best Years to connect more dots.

  • You're on it wm. I have The Grays and been savoring it since it came out. Those dots spell out Jason and Jellyfish!

  • The bass riff is very similar to "Very Best Years".

  • awesome

  • This song is a masterpiece.

  • @indigofruit

    Totally agree. Divine pop music.

  • this is like a cross between love and led zeppelin. kicks so much ass. damn

  • The album credits him for playing both bass and guitar on this song.

  • That's gotta be Jason Falkner on bass playing throughout the video and on guitar @2:17. Nice hat! It would seem so since he played on the album.

  • Fantastic song, bought it on 7-inch. Terrible video though!

  • I'm tired and not too thrilled

with yearnings that mustn't be filled...

Wow, still hits me in the same spot as when I was 18.

  • Eric, after 10 long years of nothing, is doing music again and, no surprise, it's brilliant. Check out his 2 latest, Foundation Sounds (w/ the brilliant 'Our House') and 'the Imagination Stage'

  • Fuhhhhhhhhhh,I finally found this song!!! I remembered his name but not the song. GREAT FUCKEN song!!!

  • How cool! Great song but I'd not seen the video before.

  • You must admit the video is great... it fills the minds w/his genius!!!

  • I forgot about this song. Great track.
