He has a great voice but all he needs to do is to work harder on his own vocal range, in two years my vocal range has changed dramatically compared to how it was back then, i can sing higher notes and all you need is sing, dont need no professional training of course its better and helps but i mean why would you need the training if your a singer by nature. But yeah he has an excellent voice if he trains his pitches and higher notes he'll nail anything (:

His vowels are different because he's Irish and not classically trained. and If you have any REAL irish friends you'd know that they were probably out having a good time the night before and this is a morning show so anyone in the same shoes would have a little trouble belting that out.

Well, for those who wrote he's a tenor, no... he's not.

He belts the high notes, they don't come natural to him.

He actually has quite poor technique, and it's not as good live as on cd.

But probs to him doing it anyway, and what he lacks in technique he puts into feelings and effort if you ask me so it's quite good still.

@kenny99996565665 Yeah, I can see that. He seems to really try to push his chest voice up there without attempting to minimize the pressure by modifying the vowel. If I'm not mistaken, he'd hit the "what am I gonna do", easier if he modified the "ah" to more of a "u" sound as in the word"push".

@UltimateAnn Well, but he's a tenor. Many men and women, without voice training, push for their high notes. However, for a tenor, those notes shouldn't be that high, especially in falsetto.

@heuter303 It's a cajon...It's a old Peruvian percussion instrument and I can't say I've ever seen anyone play it like this. This guy has it upside down (you can see the rubber feet on the top of the drum in the video. Every other time I've seen someone play it, the sit on top of it, and hit the front of the drum in different places (kind of like how you strike a djembe in different places with different techniques) to get different sounds.

I hate to jump into this argument but I have been watching tons of versions of this song on YT. I have to say that it is one of the best written songs that has come out in recent years. However, this guy does not have a good live voice. Mic or no mic. I honestly think a mic would have made him sound worse. This guy can't hit the notes that this song was produced in. The only note he hits is the fausetto but the rest of the chorus just sounds awful.

As I said in my original comment, " I have to say that it is one of the best written songs that has come out in recent years." The radio version of this song is amazing, amazing. It's very well written and produced great. PRODUCED GREAT, not sang great live. I am a good singer but I can't sing it in the Gm key (capo on 3rd fret, guitar) that this is performed in.
