Also, not all patients are admitted for I-131 therapy...there are occupancy factors that are involved, hospital/insurance policies to be considered, as well as what type of treatment is being administered--is it only for hyperthyroidism, or is it for cancer, or cancer with metastatic disease...
It was standard procedure at the hospital I worked at for anyone being admitted for I-131 therapy. It was performed in this manner because it was easier to be proactive than reactive to radioactive contamination. If the room could not be decontaminated it couldn't be opened back up to patients and the census was always full at this facility.
i spent 3 weeks in islolation, but not with this much of a drastic measure for as far as room preparation is concerned! what i wonder is for what dosage and type of radiation therapy was the patient to under go for such drastic room prep? Only the physicist to measure radiation levels over my body entered the room every day..till he felt comfortable that i could be discharged. I did eat using disposable plates etc & visitors stood behind a glass window and communicated with me via intercom....
This is crazy ... I had this done in Canada and got sent home right after. They just told me to avoid sleeping in the same bed as my husband for acouple of days and not to be around pregnant women or small children for the first 48 hours. Overkill or What?
