You should learn to throw under all conditions. The circle at Salinas used to be made of wood. In 1981 on that circle, Ben Plunknet warmed up at 250 feet (didn't throw in the meet) and Delis won with a throw of 231. I am an old thrower who learned to throw from a dirt or grass circle. Al Oerter would train on wet circles so that he was prepared for bad conditions in competition.
@discusdoc Al lived only a few towns over from me.
I understand what your saying but for a sporting event there should be a golden standard. My school had one of the nicest circles on Long island, and half the schools we went do were a slab of cement with a circle painted. Its ok to PRACTICE on shit circles but I don't think athletes shouldn't have to actually compete on a mediocre circle. Just as there are strict regulations on the discus and shot there should be regulations on the circles
You're right. Unfortunately, most track programs are not run by throwers. Ten years ago, I threw in the masters world championships in England. The circles were throw bad that former Olympians were falling during the competition. We have to hang in there and do the best we can.
