  • Stick your finger in there!

  • Oh cool, Charles has this now? He has a ton of train horns too.

  • I just realized this- the chopper and stator are an STH-10 assembly! thats why it has the circular inprints on the stator.

  • @legomn54321 i was thinking the same thing.

  • and what is that diaganol piece of flat metal for inside the siren?

  • HEY CHARLIE this is a cool and rare siren i think you shoulda kept it :P

  • Wogule nie słychać dźwięku bo tu ciągle zagłuszasz!

  • Put a v8 engine on it 8D

  • @SebNormandy Called the Chrysler Siren. Search it, it's powered by a V8 hemi

  • What are you going to do with this when you restore it? See if your town will use it?

  • @Droideka133 I sold it to a guy in California who loves these things as much as I do. I think he has restored it.

  • Is that spinning plate used for slight sound distortion? Or is it just a part that no one knows what it's for ?

  • @Droideka133 it reflects the sound so it becomes more audible at a farther distance

  • ive always Been Curious to see what the insides of a Thunderbeam looked like...nice Vid. :-)

  • a phase is a nother meaning for a terminal on a motor example if a motor has 3 phases it has 3 or 15 wires if it is single phase then it has only 2 wires going to it :)

  • What do you mean by you don't have access to the third phase? What is a phase?

  • Any luck with the thunderbeam today??

  • i know i read the title but can this even BE a siren, tornado? flood? air raid?

  • He said tathe does not have acces to the proper tye of power, type in RSH-10 thunderbeam at the top and youll see one running normaly.

  • what kind of siren is this?

  • Read the title ;)

  • Hmm, so if Charles Gillespie is out of California, then what state is he IN?

  • California..?

  • "California...?" What?

No, Soccer Dude, ya can't be out of a place and in a place at the same time. If someone is OUT of California, then they're IN somewhere other than California.

  • It's called.... Ebay?

  • Sounds like you're not sure, dude!

  • I am pretty confident in my assumption...lol

  • Really, even though you asked it--your question about e-bay--(what people do when they're not sure)?

  • then explain why it has the slots to install horn onto?

  • Because, as I said before, for more than one model of their siren that's this size, it makes the most sense to just use the same basic core unit for all of them. No sense in bothering to make a whole separate mold without horn dimples just because that unit's going to be part of a model that doesn't have horns. And it also wouldn't make sense to build a bunch of sirens up into what only become STH-10s once ya put the horns on them, just to take the horns back off and then make this model.

  • Really? How is anything I said so "bad," according to you?

Sounds like you're the shitwad, actually. Where ya gettin' that crap from?

  • So basically it's an STL-10 but not?

  • well, an sth-10.

  • STH-10 has horns.

  • Heh, how can something be something but not that thing at the same time? Pssch...

"Hmm, so this kettle is black, but it's not black"?

  • No shit -- The RSH-10 is a modified STH-10.

  • They wouldn't have taken an STH-10 and taken the horns off from it and then put this disc on it to make this model. They would most likely start with a basic siren core--not a specific model to turn from one into the other, but probably what an STH-10 is BASED on (only)--and made this from one of those basic cores, and then take another set of core parts like it that they can then make an STH-10 from.

  • The RSH-10 (seen in this video) is basically an STH-10 without the intake and horns. The Federal 500 is the same thing, a rotating STH-10 without horns, instead it has a large horn surrounding the ports to direct the sound outward horizontally. Unlike the RSH-10 it has an intake on it, like the STH-10 does.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, all mechanical sirens have intakes. Maybe they don't have intake tubes or pipes or ducts or whatever, but they all have to have an intake of some kind in order to work. So this siren, as well as STH-10 and others. The intake is just the hole where the blades suck the air in from, so they all have'em.

  • Yeah, exactly, Summer Man.

  • impressive and quite hi-tech for it's day.....noisy little bugger too....lol

  • there is what appears to be a palstic-and-rubber-thingy connecting the chopper part of the shaft to the longer bit.

at 1:50 you can really see that. what is it?

  • cheetawolf, that is a shaft coupler. It has two metal halves with a plastic or rubber insert. They are useful if there is some minor shaft misalignment since it's not a solid coupling.

  • I thought it was supposed to snap if there is a large load to avoid burning the motor.

then youde get another coupler fix the problem and be runnign again!

  • when you gunna fire the sterling up?

  • be quiet!

  • why don 't you put your dick in there legend813a.

  • Well thats kinda mean dont ya think??

    lol jk

  • well he said put your finger in there

  • At least you know the motor isint froze up. These are getting rare...

  • This hit the Rising videos in science and technology!!!!

  • when you gwet the motor working will you shoot another video?

  • wow thats a tbeam?

  • do you have the horns? and does the motor work?

  • The Thunderbeam doesn't use any horns, however, it does have a deflector that projects the sound downward. It's sitting in my shed along with the stainless steel housing covers (to keep the birds out).

I don't know if the motor works or not but when we get a phase converter we'll know for sure.

  • Brushless motor drives work as a phase converter.

  • yeah man Grpaevine is fixing to takke their thunderbeams down down along with one STH-10 and two ASC T-112s will be removed i want to get a T-beam the STH-10 and a T-112

  • Looks large!

Is that chopper used in any other siren model?

I assume there would be only single tone versions of this.

  • Oh it is HUGE, believe me!

Yeah, the siren part is actually an STH-10 without any horns.

Yep, sadly they only made 12-portsingle tone versions. I'm surprised they didn't experiment with dual tone, or try an STL-10 on it, it would have really make the Thunderbeam live up to its name.

  • Where you get it???

  • i want to get grapevine`s sth-10 and possibly one of their T-112`s

  • Get the t 112

  • If you forced the Disk to move

    Would the chopper revolve?

  • No, the disk's gearbox has a slip clutch in it to prevent any damage to the gears whenever the disk has too much force applied to it. Works in the same general way as a Thunderbolt's horn does, where it slips whenever the winds are too high and forces the horn around.

  • maybe.

but with the gear ratio, youde need a frikking lot of torque to get the motor to move, plus you might strip the gears in the drive system.

  • That is by far the best siren video I have ever seen!

  • Ohh now I see how they works. Anyways happy 4th of July!

  • I have only seen the sirens with the stators on with the rotor. If you remove the stator and run the motor, it should run like an electric fan. I had not seen a video of one yet without a stator that I know of.

  • That's not a nice thing to say about yourself.

  • what is that disk thing in the center?

  • The deflector.

The way a thunderbeam is omnidirectional is because it directs the airflow from the chopper downward onto a rotating disk, deflecting the sound into the direction it's facing

  • thanks

  • i dont get it ps u put this up the same day as transformers 2 came out ps. good movie u shud go c it

  • we have a ton of these here in newark ohio

and they are the loudest wehave

  • when and where is it going into commission

  • I don't know, I haven't tried to sell it yet. We have to restore it first

  • 2:40?

  • Sterling M-5 Fire siren, 3 phase

  • Apparently the M-5 and M-10 were both 5hp, but the 5 was the single head and the 10 was the dual head. I guess the guy building you that motor will be able to tell you how many HP your sterling is...

  • Get a phase converter if you want to run that siren. You can most likely get one at a shop that sells large electric motors. If you do deside to get one buy a used one thay are less expencive than a new one. = )

  • Yeah we called a guy today that sells them and he's gonna build us one for our application, so expect some videos of this in the near future at full blast

  • Awesome awesome awesome! Can't wait to hear this sumbitch screaming!

  • that's what godzilla used to shave in the morning

  • thats really cool!!!

  • where dose that go?

    do you hate me?

because coffeeandsugar20 dose he lies can you talk to him into likeing me as a friend

  • nice t-beam

  • build a building with a roof made of solar panels

  • For 3-phase you would need a 50-800 kw generator

  • Actually a 10KW would run that t-beam on 208-230 with no problem.

  • Actually a 10KW would be more than enough.

  • That's pretty cool Charlie! Thanks for posting!

  • oh so theres a shaft that goes down to the disk? cool!

  • Pretty cool Charlie!

  • The nerd in me would so love to come out and look at thing closely in person, where did you get this anyway.

And out of curiosity, what is the hp rating on the motor.

  • It's a 10HP, 208-240/480VAC 3 phase motor.

  • Awesome Charlie. Can't wait to see it restored.

  • so would you say this is the biggest and most powerful siren you have?

  • You can see that the chopper was obviously the exact same one as an STH-10. They both used 24" 12-port choppers so..

  • if you have a backpack leaf blower or any other type of blower you should try spinning it with that. We have a backpack blower and can really get a good growl out of our model 5.

Oh, looks like a got a good looking thunderbeam.

  • Oh yeah, by blowing at it up through the bottom! (Easier to do with the gear cone taken off, though.)

  • it sounds great sure b nice to hear it on full wind up w/ the motor

  • Yeah I wish I could run it but it's a three phase siren, and we don't have three phase power at our house. I'm going to try to find a single phase motor for it but not many people other than WSS sells them. I'll have to see.

  • well u could use like an old blower motor off of a furnace or something like that

  • @markzins, who errantly said, "well u could use like an old blower motor off of a furnace or something like that.

Oh, no, you absolutely could NOT! This thing is much bigger and WAY heavier than any furnace fan that you or I will probably ever come into contact with! No little furnace blower motor will spin this thing very well at all!

  • @MaxxFordham well this just got better, there's a little . between the 1 and 0. 1.0 hp? by AO Smith

  • @bait28

NOW I believe you! ONE horsepower. For a furnace blower, that's completely within the realms of likelihood.

I was betting on something like that. I should've suggested that maybe a decimal got missed.

Yep, you have egg all over your face now, for all of that rude, vulgar screaming you did at me, before now finally discovering that you WERE indeed wrong, don't you?

  • @MaxxFordham Lol, dude, i am sorry, for the confusion, would you mind as well, i want you to removing all of your comments on this from the video and i'm removing mine right now, sorry dude, lol

  • @bait28

Okay, I've removed all of mine from up above now, and we'll even remove all of these too, once we know we've seen these new ones, too, right?

Kind-of embarrassing, huh, to later find the decimal there, and then go, "Oh my heck, I yelled at this guy for nothing"? Okay, well I won't rub it in anymore. Thanks for the apology. :)

Oh, and I don't expect the video anymore. When you told me about the decimal in the "1.0 HP," that took care of it for me. :)

  • @MaxxFordham I in the end didn't find it embarrassing, more than i looked at it and said, WTF, i seriously hate my eyesight now, i also am getting contacts on Friday, lol, i need them, 20/80 vision FTL. also, to simulate my vision, take your camcorder, and turn it on manual focus, and put it 1 full rotation right, and that's what i see. i hate my vision. lol

  • @bait28

Awww, it should still be embarrassing, because... okay, well if I had yelled really angrily at a guy for a while and then still discovered how wrong I was, I'd be like, "Oh, NOO! I DIDN'T just do all that, did I? Oh, I can't BELIEVE myself!" I'd bury my head in the sand! LOL!

Well, anyway, yeah, sux that you have that bad vision. I have somewhat bad vision without my glasses, too, but it's still okay enough that I don't wear them most of the time.

  • @MaxxFordham well i didn't find it a big deal cause this was a minor thing and i don't exactly know you so i felt like i hadn't done anything huge, but yeah i can understand what you are saying, and don't you hate shit vision?

  • @MaxxFordham it's funny, look up at how may comment removed there are lol

  • @bait28

So-uh... if this is the time when you feel like a little "sorry" might be in order, I'll be ready to happily accept that.

I think we should go through here and remove all our mean postings to each other, all the way up to and including where you said your furnace motor was 10 HP, so that the whole ugly conversation is gone. Better yet, we should ask Soccerdude to do it for us, so that there won't even be the placeholders with the word "removed" sitting in them. What do you think?

  • @MaxxFordham i also took a video of the furnace a minute ago, i can't get the camera abel to see the 1hp but i did run it up with the cover open and tried to show the blower blades, i will upload them later. lol,

  • @bait28

Oh, and I don't expect the video anymore. When you told me about the decimal in the "1.0 HP," that took care of it for me. :)

Of course you can still post it if you want, though. :)

  • @MaxxFordham

Dang it, YouTube STILL has a problem of posting some comments out of order!

  • @MaxxFordham ya thats been a problem, also, have you been getting the 502 error as well. i have alot.

  • @bait28

    I haven't seen the 502. What's that one?

  • @MaxxFordham 502 is an error where the sever is unable to complete your request.

  • @bait28

Yes, you're right now, indeed it did: it got better for what *I* was saying all along.

  • @MaxxFordham wait, if it's 1 hp, that means it is one Horsey, but i can't ride it :(

  • @bait28

    Yep, true. :-S

  • @bait28

Oh, and one more thing I just remembered to say:

So the final result of all this discussion, especially after you finally noticed that decimal there in the "1.0 HP" on your furnace motor label IS.... (drum roll, please...):

No, your furnace motor, just being at ONE horsepower, would NOT be able to drive this siren.

    ;-)

  • @MaxxFordham lets remove them for the time being and i'll try to get soccer dude to remove them when we can, cause he has friend lock on and i have to contact him, mabey on fb.

  • @bait28

    Okay, agreed. Done.

  • @bait28

Ya know something, though? I do kind-of wonder why these sirens, whose choppers are about 2 feet wide, have blades that are so dang heavy that they even do need 10-HP motors, which are usually 3-phase motors. There are some blower blades that could be about this big but probably still wouldn't need motors that strong. I guess these blades are pretty thick, but I wonder also why they need to be that thick and heavy. What if they made a siren this big but with thin, light parts?

  • @MaxxFordham good point, you should look into why they don't

  • @bait28

Yeah... it would just solve a curiosity, is all...

  • @MaxxFordham that, and save poles that keep on tipping over and bending from the weight of these things, like Tempest 135's

  • Correct me if I am wrong but there is such thing as a phase converter right?

  • Yes but I don't know if I want one because of the price, and the amount of power that they use, aside from the siren.

  • So.....now your restoring sirens? I would love that hobbie. But, i dont have that money or room to get real sirens, but i do now collect siren ad's. :|

  • OMG, THAT THING IS HUGE!! Great job, Charlie! Did you get the disc to rotate yet?

You have a Carters WW siren too?

  • Yup, it rotates fine!

That other siren is a Sterling M-5/10, 16/16 port high tone

  • It's a Sterling M-3, Charlie. I can read the 3 on the motor tag, hi-res screen + good eyes ftw :D

  • Cool. Now we will have even MORE Thunderbeam videos, on YT. Are you going to test it?

  • could you test it ?

  • He is allowed to, by his county EMA.

  • Yes but I don't have 3 phase power to run it

  • nice!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • Sounds great, Charlie! Nice video! :)

  • How Big is this Beast? 5'9?

  • Close, 5' 8"

  • Taller than me O.o Im only 5'4 ½...

  • congrats on being the 1st T-beam owner I'm aware of. A good way to get the M to do a good growl is with a drill and scoket attach to one rotor. I've done with with my M-5 and got a nice growl out of it.

  • Well for some reason, my M-5/10 doesn't have those rotor lock bolts anywhere, so I guess winding it up by hand is good enough for now.

I've also noticed that sometimes it has a tiny bit resistance to turning the rotors.
