  • Stop repeating it over and over "yes Yes Yes Yes Yes"

  • I thought yes would be a thumbs up and no would be a thumbs down.

  • Can you show signs for mail as in letter, sandwich, and some animals please.

  • captions are a joke? nah couldnt be jokes are usally funny.

  • @ohbabyitssierra deaf people should make a video just have subtitles or a translator

  • what's with the crazy captions?

  • there are three more ways of saying no... why doesnt she teach them as well?

  • Thanks

  • She acts like a robot "No... No... No..., Jacket... Jacket..." xDD Ok now I need movements signs...

  • @writerforever97 yeah that happened to me too? :/

  • Am I the only one who has a messed up description? It says feelings, but I'm seeing a video with words like Candy, Play, TV, etc.

  • i'm impressed with the way you teach. you use 'association" with your teaching. thank you. i've always wanted to learn sign language. we all should. it is interesting that we use a lot of the signs in every day living not realizing that they are actually ASL sign language like Telephone, jacket, etc..

  • AWESOME GOD BLESS YOU IM GONNA LEARN SOME OF THIS!

  • @smap19541 this is the way my boyfriend signs and he's deaf and this is the way I have learned too. So I was wondering why it's wrong or she isn't qualified. I'm curious

  • Sorry to say this video sucks. The lady is not qualified to teach my language. She teaches two languages simultaneous and two different modality which is IMPOSSIBLE. This goes to show me that she discredits my language (ASL). Its kind of bastardize my language. I am not pleased. (Disclaimer: I do not speak for you other ASL users, this is my opinion and my expression of someone commonly disregards my true language and I am disgusted!)

  • I've been waiting for the feelings signs......

  • @lorrainewands A lot of signs are regional. It might be one way in California and something completely different in Arizona.

  • There are variations. All of the signs here are correct, but you might see other ways of signing it if the signer is from another place. I am from Ohio, we sign some words different from Michigan. It's like accent.

  • i can spell stuff in ASL and i know 1-100,maybe 1000, but i just want to know how to say stuff in 1 sign, not a bunch of signs.

  • Wait Can You Do Signing On the Left Hand ???

  • @XxLaLaNoirXx yes you can sign on your left or right hand depending on what your m9ost comfortable with :)

  • @motocrossmania42 shes a great instructor, ive learnd so much from her, maybe your in a bad mood today, im not sure but dont take it out on her...

  • I learned some. Thanks

  • she so funny

  • cool

  • i rly like this lady she teaches very well post more:)

  • can a deaf person make a video on sign language i really want to learn how to but these comments are saying shes not good at teaching sign, and if a deaf person did make a sign video you might want to speak too so everyone knows what there signing

  • @OhBabyItsSierra not all deaf people speak though.

  • @moegem526 like me...

  • i like the videos me and my friend r learning can u post up the song mighty to save in sign launage so we can learn

    thankss !!!

  • Thumbs up if you're looking at this because you saw Rise of The Planet of The Apes.

  • @crowguard I am not deaf but I do sign and all the signs iv seen are right but yet there are other ways to sign things too. I had a deaf bf and him and his family taught me so we were able to talk without writing everything out.

  • @TheWitchWay harsh!! but i see what you mean. its useful and there maybe a time were this will come in handy

  • dont be so mean to her:(

  • i can hear and talk and i sign to my parents and brother all day long and this lady is saying and signing the word the right way

  • Dear dclandlord, I hear (and see) perfectly - and this lady is not misformed.

  • @dclandlord do you know any good videos or websites to learn sign language? I'm not deaf or mute or know anyone that's either one, but I never know when I'll ever need it

  • @ayeshaaIamshow me too. Just kinda seems fun & if I ever wanna annoy someone, I'll do it in sign language

  • i dont even know why, im learning sign language, i dont even know anyone deaf.

  • why couldn't yes be a nod ?

  • @PumpkinNberries It can be, but it's like SAYING yes rather than just nod. The point of sign language is that you're using your hands instead of your voice to speak.

  • Great video

  • I live these videos!! I am 12 and just loved the idea of sign language!! And since my school doesn't teach it I thought I learn it by myself over the summer! I already kno over 20 words!

  • Im learning W ur clases........LOL MELISSA ..... im mex :D

  • okay well people must like her because of all her views

  • why wouldnt you just shake your head up and down for yes and shake your head side to side for no, like you regularly would do?

  • Practicing your online American Sign Language skills is important. If it wasnt, why would you have signed up to learn in the first place? Many people new to American Sign Language will seek practice time with individuals from their own community. Many people learning sign language are willing to meet with you on a weekly basis in order to improve your sign language skills and become proficient.

  • her videos have been fantastic instruction, as a police officer I learned from her videos and actually applied her teachings to help out hearing impaired individuals a few times. Thanks Melissa, looking forward to more of your teachings!

  • afsd

  • thank u... this helped me talk to my deft friend....now were bffs

  • Very good.. but I'll need more practice xD

  • I just saw the TLC video unpretty and saw left eye doing sign language and I decided that if my guy friend can do it why cant i

  • Wow this is easyier than i thought. this id fun!!!

  • thanks so much

  • I like it!Nice!

  • @Redtrooper2 I DID!

  • i think she did it really good... mad eit easy for me

  • I love the language , and thank god I know it. (:

  • @oldspice420 me to , but a guy -___- this is so mucch harder than i thought . i already forgot TV .

  • @oldspice420 wow o.O

  • Melissa, Thank You very much for your videos. I'm a new sign language learner and you are very good at teaching. Again thank you.

  • thank you for posting this!!

  • im dateing a deaf girl and i want to be able to talk to her better then just bye reading lips

  • this is good...i work with disabeld and mentily chanlenged ppl and i need to lern digh language....PERFECT

  • @mmgoicochea Haha my professor told me about that. lol.

  • @whoswithme1 In my comment I asked for Auslan, and said I'm Australian. I know there are different signs for each counrty

  • I really want to learn sign language, but I don't have the money to take courses, and I don't know anybody who knows Auslan (I'm Australia). I'm not deaf but I would love to learn. Does anyone have and sites they could show me? Thank you! :)

  • @BeatlesFan1962 When you find a good website to learn this stuff, make sure it is Australian sign language. What this woman is doing is american sign language and is only good in america. Every country has its own sign language

  • @BeatlesFan1962 HEY! I'm not deaf but I love to learn sign language, too!!

But you are awared that each country has their sign language right? I'm a bit confused, not sure which country's sign language to self learn

  • Thank you! I learned something new! Fantastic.

  • Sign language is a good skill to learn, especially in our day and age where kids are turning up their iPods as loud as possible, and eventually destroying all the hearing they have. Give this comment a thumbs up if you agree.

  • It's important in any Sign Language teaching situation to state which country, in this case ASL as opposed to my country's BSL. If you're going to put stuff up on the net, the subtitles being wrong is unforgavable.

  • this is ok for beginners but some signs are different yo ours

  • xP I love the subtitles. "Anger. It's coming from the inside. You're angry, anger."

  • the subtittles are about feeling, but shes teaching us random words O_o a lil odd is u as mee ^-^

  • She repeats it 5 times becuase when your learning you don't always pick it up the first time. This is a great video to learn how to sign. My son is 3 years old and just learning.

  • @NaomiDusk if u would would think, maybe u would no that this is 4 people that are NOT deaf and WANT to know sign lanuage. she tryin to help ya'll out and u thinkin negative.

  • im deaf my self and i do bsl and asl AND also speak some of the people are bit stupid coz they sed tey cnnot speak at all, but they can....

  • @NaomiDusk they can see and not because they cant hear means they cant talk.

  • Why is everyone so mean to this cute lady?

I don't think she is annoying.

  • Wow! sign language is easy! thnx, ahha i thought it was like really hard:P

  • im trying to learn more of sign language and im a hard of hearing i have one ear to hear the other im deaf? ive have been in deaf programs but never learned this stuff its seems pretty interesting to learn?

  • is it the same in all the world?

  • ok she only has to do it twice not 5!

  • but this is asl not bsl

  • Yh , i think every one should give it a shot on sign language , as it is horreble not been able to hear i ken from experance as i am loosinhg my hearing and wack folkes mouth when they are talking to me so i can work out what they are saying , But you shoud not diss on folk that canni speack , see or hear as you don't know how it feels .

  • How many times do I have to write the same comment? But here goes again. If you are questioning this person's signs, aren't you already seeing that she is not a source for information on ASL? Shouldn't you go somewhere else to learn, like to a real ASL teacher??? Someone who is qualified to teach??? Why spend time arguing back and forth over the individual signs she is making, when the fact is, the whole thing is just wrong to begin with. THIS IS NOT ASL. Find a real teacher everyone.

  • I think Melissa doesn't want to teach people that can't hear, but to those like me that just want to learn sign language just like I would learn any other language, I want to improve my skills at work and to serve better.

  • NaomiDeus, EXPAND YOUR WORLD. My wife and I are both hearing and are in a sign language class RIGHT NOW. This video is for people like us who are open to learn more about the world, NOT for people like you who would rather live in their own microcosm. So far we've learned basic Turkish, Portuguese, French and Spanish... and now sign language. Consider the possibilitities ! ! ! ! Enjoy life while you can.

  • I have a question. I am currently earning sign language so I can bettr communicate with a deaf man I know. My problem is because of my cerebral palsy and how it affects my right ride withthe loss of fine motor skills I am unabe to sign for example the word "play." My left hand signs play but it looks ike the sign "yelllow" because my right hand makes a fist with the thumb up. Do you have a suggestion on how I can still sign "play"?

  • @BoRnToBeWiLDforGoD - Even signing people have their hands full sometimes. Signing a two hand sign is OK if it's done with one hand... just might take a bit more context to figure it out. You wouldn't sign I YELLOW, so the other option is I PLAY. Another option is to finger spell it.

  • @RCSpain Thank you very much. That helps alot. And thank you for posting lessons on sign language.

  • are those same in greek??

  • Okay I am not demaning u at al..but I also am watching Signing time with alex and Leah, and they do ball and Play diffrent..so who is more up to date?

  • why dont you just nod your head instead of using your hands

  • In my view, the "naysayers" are teaching others to respect the language and culture of Deaf people.

  • @Banerika Two people trying to learn anything at all is better than a whole room of people who have learned nothing. Yes, I want to get it right and respect the language but I'll not lash a person who makes an error.

  • because some deaf people do not understand that

  • i am gunna learn sign Language wiv my sister so my dad dont know waa im saying

  • When you said TV? it said random things on the bottom about anger. Why

  • She is very condescending and doesn't have any qualifications to teach ASL.

  • I'm deaf myself but the way she talks is makes me feel like a little kid in kindergarten...I hate that feeling

  • @Pastry21 same here why would she talk like that

  • Have you seen any good tutorials on youtube? I am a personal trainer and I have a deaf client. He is teaching me some, but I want to learn between our training times as well.

  • @Pastry21 sure, but every language lessons are like that. i think what counts is that people get to learn sign language by that?

  • @Pastry21 i tottaly agree!!

  • @Pastry21 I'm not being mean or anything but is it hard being deaf? I would think it would be so angering.

  • @Pastry21 you are deaf and i am george washington.

  • @Pastry21 I am not deaf but i want to learn ASL but even when i am trying to learn she makes me feel so stupid! Im sorry to hear u r deaf but hopefully i will be able to learn ASL and communicate with u!

  • this helped me I have always wanted to learn sign language

  • cool! where did you also learn that? lol

    im just really curious..... hehehe

i already memorized the alphabet so all i need is that kind..... lol

  • THANKS ! this helped lots with people in my school that has sign language ! THANKS.

  • It would be nice to tell us which sign language this is in the header. Though I expect it to be american sign language.

  • agreed!!!!

  • lovely work melissa....

    ...ur proud student aj

  • is this ASL or BSL, because if its BSL its absoloute rubbish.

  • the discription for all your videos are wrong they say this is for mom and dad and a couple more videos do the same thing

  • Melissa from one teacher to another your teaching methods are very good. Great work!!!

  • Um.. this isn't a video abou emotion. this is something else.

  • expertvillage, I wish you had numbered your videos.

  • Shes very good, however all these words are kinda random, maybe its easier to learn that way, I guess. She never taught us how to sign pooper :(

  • thank you!!

  • this was very helpful. thank you =)

  • I totally agree

  • ok....... but I still got a lot out of the video..... so they made a mistake.... it happens..... didn't even bother me as I never knew about the captions button!! LOL

  • i don't know WHAT you all are talking about .... captions?? I see none.... this seems like a very good teaching video.... I have learned a lot!!! And was never confused... thank you!

  • LOOK at the bottom of the screen

next to the Time run 2:16- Volume - HQ-exspand - small white triangle hover over that & you will SEE the CC captions option.

  • nice thumbnail

  • her poor forehead

  • You are a very good teacher, thanks for the instruction!

  • Irish

  • My grandpa is from Canada and he's deaf....their signing looks like this.

This woman is also from Canada. This isn't exactly incorrect, it's almost a different dialect. I don't really see any obvious mistakes

  • listen to her fricatives before you judge her too harshly.

  • wrong CC

  • Irish sing language is differrent.

  • omg this is so easy

  • thank you so much the way your teaching im getting this real easy thank you

  • Could you repeat that, please? xD

  • lol.... i see what you're talking about now...

  • Yes, there's audio.

  • Wow !!!!!!! i use the sign no 4 longest i didnt know dat wuz sign language... i use it on my necie & nephews... Thanks dude

  • Can you repeat that.

  • I really love this particular video thread. She really shows the signs for you in an awesome way! Thank you!

  • yup! definatley changing my profession into sign language...lol

    its awsome

  • i agree u dont have to repeat but in some people's opinion they like to repeat she is good though

  • thank you for the extra extra reminder =-) childrens hos...ya know.. ;-)

  • in my middle schooll we are the top one for deaf system and so is the high school i have 2 friends that are deaf so i speak allot of sign :D

  • i used to hang in a cafe of which its waiter was deaf and mute thats how i learned a bit of it

  • sign language is universal right ?

i really want to learn it cuz it must be horrible not being able to speak and just being able to communicate like this. i don't know anyone deaf or mute but i really want to learn how to speak it.

  • It's not universal. There are various forms of sign languages used around the world. This is for American Sign Language, which is used the U.S. and in the English speaking areas of Canada, I believe.

  • American Sign Language, as is shown in the video, is not universal--Deaf people in different parts of the world sign differently, just as speaking people speak different languages in different parts of the world.

Also, keep in mind that people who are Deaf or hard of hearing can communicate in many non-verbal ways (pen & paper, video relay services, texting, email, etc.)

  • Hey no it's not universal per-say, I mean the ASL is the standard for the United States. However, Demographics come into play and they sometimes change signs, not to mention slang. Different countries sign completely different. I would assume it would be the same in Canada since ASL is based in French not english. Than again english is based in 5 different languages maybe, thats why it's the hardest language to learn and write!

  • no, she is spot on. TV is correct and this is basic signing...she's teaching, she doesnt need to show emotion. My parents are both deaf and I started signing when I was 3....I'm 30 now...everything she did is right.

  • i dont get the yes1

  • thank you easy to follow

  • i have a question. It might be a stupid one too but i was wandering...if a english person wanted to sign the word jacket...would it be the same sign for a french person. Im asking this because im french and i obvilious dont want the sign the wrong message. Also i have a friend that is deaf so i would like to be able to sign better....and also thx for upload this videos

  • Sometimes signs are the same (rarely) but each and every country has its own sign language. You will need to learn French Sign Language (LSF). Also, even if you wanted to learn American Sign Language, this video would not be helpful to you, as she is not teaching ASL, but SEE, and with many mistakes.

  • yeah like i'm Chinese and i've seen some Chinese people do sign language and one sign include sticking your middle finger up and touching your chin while here, in America, it means eff you.

  • yea it means father or mother ahaha

  • Why are the titles wrong?

  • is sign language in america and britain the same, please?

  • No. They evolved differently. They are almost completely different.

  • No.

    USA has american sign language.

BR has british sign language. both cannot communicate with each other.

  • They should do something about that, shouldn't they?

  • What is your learning goal? To know random signs, or to communicate with Deaf people? If your goal is to communicate with Deaf people, this video will not help you. To make an analogy, someone may know a few French words, or even many French words. Would that person be able to take this raw vocabulary and be able to talk to a French person they meet? Likely not.

  • Ah, we see your true point then, no?

The issue you have is that the grammar is not taught, at which point I am forced to agree. However it is not only the deaf or ASL teachers that know it. Anyone who is fluent and good at explaining may teach grammar. however, once some grammar is learned, it is benificial to begin learning "random signs" so that one's vocabulary may be increased. I myself know enough of the ASL grammar to get by and simly need more words to express myself.

  • There is as point at which these video's become helpful even if they are semi-incorrect. original comment was aimed less at wrong areas, and more twards the naming. I said that these are wonderful videos, and now I will mention that they are not for begginers. I believe that a start in ASL should be taught person to person so that the dialect one learns is appropriate for the area one lives in.

  • Learning signs that are wrong from someone who is doing it wrong is not helpful to anyone. If you want to learn more vocabulary, don't learn it from someone who gets it randomly wrong because they are not actually qualified to teach ASL. Also, quite frankly, it bothers me that a Deaf person does not have this job. Honestly, the real "experts" in sign language are Deaf, So how come expertvillage didn't hire someone Deaf?! How hard could it have been?

  • I do not blindly learn, but rather check it against other sources. For instance, on another video, I commented on how some of her colours were wrong. However your Idea of direction someone to a Buch of video's that are hard to learn is callous. If you wish to say that only deaf people and ASL teachers are the only ones to know ASL well enough to teach it, you are wrong. Please save it for a time when it's appropriet.

*also *this random* does anyone have a hard time learning asl do to dyslexcia?

  • I am not being callous, I am saving people from learning it wrong. And yes, I am saying that Deaf people and ASL teachers are the correct sources of information for ASL. My suggestion for you, if you need repetition, is to watch a correct use of ASL over and over again, thus getting the repetition you need without the mistakes. Learning individual signs alone is not the way to learn ASL, because you are ignoring the grammar when you do that. Thanks.

  • I'm teaching Sign Language at my school

  • This has really helped me to learn ASL. Thank you for posting these videos. I like that she repeats the words as often as she does. I learn tons of words everyday because of these postings.

  • repitition is key in learning.

  • Actually, her accent is incredibly Canadian. My cousin is deaf and canadian, and I recognize all of these signs. There are different signs, like there are various accents in spoken language.

  • That's funny, I know two Canadian signers and neither of them sign "wait" with the hand facing outward like she does, to use one example of many, nor do any of the other ASL signers I have ever seen on YouTube. There are definitely accents and regional signs, but ... it honestly seems to me that she just gets it wrong. Apologies to everyone in Canada if they reverse hand orientation for "wait."

  • Lol. It's odd

  • very interesting to know some little bits. I knew the sign for candy,k I was a volunteer once and there was an autistic girl, who communicated through tones and sign languages and oh yes, she indeed had a sweet tooth! (-:

  • Thank you Melissa from a nurse that needs t o communicate w/ special needs patients !

  • i am happy when you study me ASL?

    I don't know, what i'm talking about.

  • People who are talking bad about these videos are very rude.I interpurate for the deaf (my friend) and i have learned there are many diffrent ways to sign each word. She just learned diffrent from you.Thank you for taking time out od your day to help teach us: ]
