Change Wordpress permalinks to search engine friendly urls

I have already started constructing my website (although it is not published to the Web yet). Can I change my permanlinks after I have already started making the site? Will it automatically change pages that have been created? And will it change any links to those pages or do I have to go in and manually change them?

If I am only working with "Pages" do I put /%pagename% or do I keep the word "postname"

Great tutorial! one question seems no one can answer.. make wordpress permalinks end with .html?? I have many sites I am moving to wordpress and I want to keep them the same.
