When I was i child my mother took me to a lokal wedding in a small church nearby her i Vaerloese near Copenhagen. And guess who played. Maurice André! I will never forget. Carsten Konow, Denmark
One thing that sets Maurice Andre apart from other trumpet players, including Marsalis is his effortless renditions of very difficult music. He manages to make even Carnival of Venice sound almost leisurely and unhurried, with no strain whatsoever. He's, so far, the best of them all.
6 minutes of playing a reasonably difficult piece with a hugely exposed part, and there's not even the slightest hint of a frack anywhere. This guy rocks
Back in 1984, I had the most wonderful opportunity in my musical career to have conducted the Boca Raton Symphony with Maurice Andre performing the Hummel Concerto and the Albinoni D minor Concerto in two concerts. He is without exception, one of the finest classical musicians of all time. His musicality of phrasing, lyricism and effortless singing lines are simply unparalleled. His use of alternate fingerings to create flawless intonation is astonishing. May God bless this incredible musician!

The sound is not "fat" and a bit "tinny" because this is a Eb trumpet !!! Marsalis plays a Bb trumpet! Do you know the difference? Maurice Andrè is the best classical trumpet player of all time!! Marsalis has stopped 20 years ago to play classic, Marsalis can not go into the hall of fame of classical trumpeters of all time, even though it was very good with piccolo trumpet in the 80's. But then he stopped. Maurice Andre has spent a lifetime playing classic. Maurice André the best, forever :)
I love the way he looks like he has just come down for breakfast, found an orchestra in his garden and picked his trumpet up to play. The right balance of effortlessness and indulgence
As to the sound - it is more Andre's style (French) as compared to Marsalis. Andres uses a lot of vibrato where WM does not. Both are outstanding musicians. BTW, Andre started playing trumpet at age 18! I do prefer Marsalis' style.

Usually in classical music debate rages about those gone before, who was the greatest etc, how would the current crop compare, eg the legend of Paganini with the violin, virtuosi we never heard that unfortunately passed before recording was available. I think in Maurice Andre we are blessed to have had the greatest trumpet player so far, in our time. The man is peerless on this instrument. And he gets my vote as being maybe one of the top ten instrumentalists of all time.
As much as I like Tine Thing Helseth and Alison Balsom, I've never heard Maurice Andre surpassed on this piece. What big, round tones he produces and the brilliance of the sound is wonderful. No comment necessary about his embouchure. I'm genuinely sorry he's gone now.
@atube4view That could be partly due to the recording hardware used or the quality of the recording. Also, He sounds amazing, I'll put up with a slight air in his sound if that's the case.
I attended a live performance of his in Bamberg Germany about 7 years ago. He received four standing ovations and played 3 encores. His son and daughter also performed on the same concert. So much for your "he doesn't perform in front of live audiences" theory. He is the master ... the maestro! So shut your pie hole, open your ears, and listen to the greatest of all players.
@KillerTpt In softness, slightly, yes... But I'm not sure it would've been TOO necessary; anyone listening would be able to determine that he's a great musician otherwise. He could've, though
@Fuckergen I listen to Winton and he is very good, I just prefer Andre's phrasing and style. I read that Andre was big influence on Winton. It is probably the fact that I first listened to Andre as a kid and now that has become "the right way", even though Winton plays it a little different it does not make it wrong. :)
@mtbevins I agree immensely. I personally think Wynton's sound is somewhat cold and sterile, it doesn't have the eccentricities in character of some of the other trumpet players that make it sound human. At least that's what I think, and of course it's all personal preference anyway. Have you listened to Alison Balsom? She's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. She was probably highly influenced by the master though....Andre. I mean, he is often considered THE virtuosic trumpet player.
@kotetsu131 Oh and you are right about Wynton's influence too...in fact EVERYONE that plays picc well today was influenced by Andre. Wynton played a Bach back in the day...
I've always been wondering if virtuoso players produce vibrato by using their lips or shaking the trumpets, it seems that he shakes the trumpet just very slightly, anyone else have any idea?
@sepheroth56 There are basically 3 ways. Rocking fingers gently over the valve covers is one; the extreme case of this would be pinching the horn and "shaking" which would be more of a jazz thing. The other 2 are "lip vibrato," which is sometimes referred to as "natural vibrato, and the least common: "breath emphasis" (oscillating with the diaphragm). In this case, he is using lip-vibrato, and occasionally augmenting it on sustained notes with the right hand.
I played for only 1hour on a piccolo trumpet and then my lips just went off, but this man, my idol, used to play so much more and it would still sound fantastic after a few hours.
bel enregistrement ...on entend ,contrairement à pas mal de ses enregistrements... "le" son sublime ,ample et généreux ...comme on pouvait l'entendre en concert...merci pour ces images
