Hey man watching this video gave me a great idea for music collaboration in general, which I plan on proposing to a few friends of mine. I have another way of playing pinches on bass, although it may not be that economic; it involves popping under the nail of your first finger and mute/releasing with the side of your hand. I'd like to learn a few things from you and/or trade a few ideas sometime if you would like.
i was playing around with this before i search this vid i found that you can also "pop" the pinch per say by doing a standard index finger pop and allowing the bottom of your palm to just ever so graze the string in one fluid motion. then if you got some gain or something and you bend the shit out of it it'll wail... like in Cemetery Gates ( i.e.) Anyway thanks for sharing yo wisdom
Wow awesome lesson, I'm going to go try this. That tapping thing actually looks pretty easy (I know I'm going to eat those words lol). But could you just do me a favor and never wear that shirt again?
Absolutely GREAT info, Quaz!!! Even though I just bought a new Jackson guitar, I've been falling in love with basses lately? ....sheesh, that's all I need...to throw (not literally...they're way too expensive to throw!) learning BASS guitar into the mix. I think I need to learn electric guitar first and then go from there :) lol Thanks for making this a vid response to my Pinch Harmonics video...it is excellent! Loved the Birdland riffs in it!!!
@TheCrazynick23 Hey man no one is knocking what you like. look at my youtube name. I solute this guy. although their new stuff sucks ass, but you would think that either way. what does it matter what bands he likes if he can can intelligently play his instrument.
Very well done! It would be cool to try some variations, like using the index and middle fingers to bar different strings, combining the Jaco technique with Garrison fingering, or doing the Sheehan technique with the middle finger so the other two can play other things. Nice bass.
Lol, dude, that's where you're wrong. On one of Vic's videos here on Youtube, he said that he could never figure out that harmonic. He said that using his pinky was too hard cos he could never reach it, so he used his thumb. Victor Wooten is amazing and he's also my favourite bassist, but just cos one's the best doesn't mean one can't be limited by shorter fingers.
I would be careful to say any absolutes about Victor Wooten, as far as what he can't do, he'll probably figure out how to use the bass to achieve short sustained flights next. lol. Sorry, that image just came to mind and I was lmao.
I meet the guy but we never got on to that subject. Good lord could he move fast on that bass. What fun to watch. I would like to go see him perform again. Also I really want to see Nilson Matta, love his stuff, solos straight from the soul, wish he would come around. Well, keep up the bass playing, nice instructional by the way!
If your thinking of the same video I am, then (in the very same clip, probably 10 seconds away from what your saying) you'll see that instead of fretting from 2 to 6, he uses his thumb on his right hand to hit the harmonic. So that counts doesn't it?
EDIT: Just watched the video this very second. Just before he says it, he shows fretting the harmonic with his thumb instead. :)
@StJimmy2292 Apologies, just carried on watching and see that you did explain that! My fault, impressed that you can hit the 2 to 6! I use the thumb, much less feeling like I'm about to rip my finger off haha!
pretty helpful vid you have here man. pinched harmonics is my latest "addiction" in my playing...hope you post some new vids on different techniques and musical ideas. keep it up man.
wait, do u rest ur thumb on the string as u pluck it, or do u have to take it off to let the note ring? plus, what did u mean by jaco "Picking behind it" ?
ya still though the only reason i showed u the one with the effects was cuz its the only one i got on my youtube thing but try my trick of placing the string in between ur index nail makes it louder its my trick
one question.. when you were describing how any harmonic exists on the neck (ie. plucking the one on say G and doing a pinch on 13, on 7 and pinch on 19, etc). you fret and hold the first note right (the 1 or 7) ?
I learned a "steve bailey" type method as a classical guitarist, as it fits in with classical RH position.
The last method puts the RH completely out of position. However folk guitarists, who have a more curled along-the-strings hand position can use it more comfortably.
you're a good guy, excellent video. a guitarist friend taught me the fucked way of pinching you show at the end, will check out steve bailey method/tunes pronto
One more thing. You should change the title of this video to "How to play 4 kinds of pinch harmonics on a bass". I bet you would get more hits. You are giving an instruction, so you should advertise that. Trust me.
In your next video, could you explain what intervals each harmonic hits? Like the 5 and 12 hit octaves, and 7 hits the fifth plus an octave, but what about the others? Personally, thinking about stuff like this in terms of intervals makes it a lot easier to integrate into playing. For me, at least. Thanks.
well it boils down to actual notes. like the harmonic on 4,9,16 are all the same note 16 or B on the G string and so on and so forth. The harmonic on 7 is the same as that fret an octave up or 19. so it would be in order from highest to lowest: D,A,E,B
if you can fret 2.3 harmonic is the 2nd octave or the octave above the 24th fret.

yes, it helps when you take it off the string after you pluck it. What I mean is picking behind the thumb.
