  • Sweet. I have the same bass

  • Sick bro and nice icp shirt WHOOP WHOOP!!

  • very awesome lesson, love it

  • oh yeah nvm just saw the rest of the vid. nice bass! I love mine.

  • is that a spector 6 string? just wondering cause if it is i have the same one haha

  • You high bro?

  • the boy has fingers like a monkey! #LOL

  • MMFWCL my nigga, nice work on the bass id like to learn shit like that

  • Hey man watching this video gave me a great idea for music collaboration in general, which I plan on proposing to a few friends of mine. I have another way of playing pinches on bass, although it may not be that economic; it involves popping under the nail of your first finger and mute/releasing with the side of your hand. I'd like to learn a few things from you and/or trade a few ideas sometime if you would like.

  • @gunslingersirk word.... it sounds interesting, sort of like a pop and slap thing but on the pop is a harmonic. sounds cool.

  • i was playing around with this before i search this vid i found that you can also "pop" the pinch per say by doing a standard index finger pop and allowing the bottom of your palm to just ever so graze the string in one fluid motion. then if you got some gain or something and you bend the shit out of it it'll wail... like in Cemetery Gates ( i.e.) Anyway thanks for sharing yo wisdom

  • wtf is with the sniffing? fucking cokehead lol

  • @rldjsegura Could be allergies.Or funky stinks in the air.

  • Turn your amp up.

  • damn man, thats some intense shit. you really know your stuff. right on brother, im striving to play and understand music like you do.

  • your very gay, but you sure know how to play! 5/5

  • wow, i never knew youi could tap a harmonic if theres no note playing, very very useful, very good video

  • Wow awesome lesson, I'm going to go try this. That tapping thing actually looks pretty easy (I know I'm going to eat those words lol). But could you just do me a favor and never wear that shirt again?

  • i saw a stick that i could never shit on.

  • oh thanks! that fuckin' helped me a lot!

  • what is the difference between these and regular harmonics

  • This video explained harmonics almost to a tee!

    Thanks!

  • bloody hell tht tappin stuff was immence :)

  • Chaotic lesson. And no, I wont annoy myself to record and post video response.

  • Absolutely GREAT info, Quaz!!! Even though I just bought a new Jackson guitar, I've been falling in love with basses lately? ....sheesh, that's all I need...to throw (not literally...they're way too expensive to throw!) learning BASS guitar into the mix. I think I need to learn electric guitar first and then go from there :) lol Thanks for making this a vid response to my Pinch Harmonics video...it is excellent! Loved the Birdland riffs in it!!!

    Best,

    Joy/LL/ LRRG

    Tribute is NOT Theft

  • Insane clown posse sucks my asshole everyday for 50 cents.

  • @TheCrazynick23 Hey man no one is knocking what you like. look at my youtube name. I solute this guy. although their new stuff sucks ass, but you would think that either way. what does it matter what bands he likes if he can can intelligently play his instrument.

  • icp woop woop

  • And apparently you aren't smart enough to read.

    Make your own video asshole.

  • What ?! You actually think that video description GIVES YOU AN ORDER ?! Dont be fanboish.

  • Very well done! It would be cool to try some variations, like using the index and middle fingers to bar different strings, combining the Jaco technique with Garrison fingering, or doing the Sheehan technique with the middle finger so the other two can play other things. Nice bass.

  • ur a gr8 bass player !

  • hey great video, i love the explanation of the harmonic locations - very helpful. i finally get why artificial harmonics happen now

  • ha the stuff starting at 5:15 or so sounds so cool

  • haha cool vid dude !!

  • great video dude but i was wondering if you could point me to to any videos that tell you how to do it with picks?

  • pretty coool man! you are great, great technique, cool bass by the way...

  • amazing man, i still dont quite get this incredible technique

  • Comment removed

  • Haha Wooten can do that so easily. Can't believe people can even question that.

  • Lol, dude, that's where you're wrong. On one of Vic's videos here on Youtube, he said that he could never figure out that harmonic. He said that using his pinky was too hard cos he could never reach it, so he used his thumb. Victor Wooten is amazing and he's also my favourite bassist, but just cos one's the best doesn't mean one can't be limited by shorter fingers.

  • Is that Birdland at the start?

  • I would be careful to say any absolutes about Victor Wooten, as far as what he can't do, he'll probably figure out how to use the bass to achieve short sustained flights next. lol. Sorry, that image just came to mind and I was lmao.

  • Well I head him say, out of his own mouth that he can't do that stretch from 2 to 6, just saying.

  • I meet the guy but we never got on to that subject. Good lord could he move fast on that bass. What fun to watch. I would like to go see him perform again. Also I really want to see Nilson Matta, love his stuff, solos straight from the soul, wish he would come around. Well, keep up the bass playing, nice instructional by the way!

  • @quaz18

If your thinking of the same video I am, then (in the very same clip, probably 10 seconds away from what your saying) you'll see that instead of fretting from 2 to 6, he uses his thumb on his right hand to hit the harmonic. So that counts doesn't it?

EDIT: Just watched the video this very second. Just before he says it, he shows fretting the harmonic with his thumb instead. :)

  • @StJimmy2292 Apologies, just carried on watching and see that you did explain that! My fault, impressed that you can hit the 2 to 6! I use the thumb, much less feeling like I'm about to rip my finger off haha!

  • a 6 striger?whoa,that's nice :D

  • Gosh I suck at pinches.

  • yo you sound like my old bassist from way ass back in the day! good job sir! SMOKE THAT WEED NIGGA...

  • smoke weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

  • ER DAY MO FUCKA

  • pretty helpful vid you have here man. pinched harmonics is my latest "addiction" in my playing...hope you post some new vids on different techniques and musical ideas. keep it up man.

  • is that a spector?

  • wait, do u rest ur thumb on the string as u pluck it, or do u have to take it off to let the note ring? plus, what did u mean by jaco "Picking behind it" ?

  • yes, it helps when you take it off the string after you pluck it. What I mean is picking behind the thumb.

  • ahhh, ya I figured it outr like 20 minutes after i posted the comment lol

but this vid really helped me get it down. the pinch harmonics don't sound that great yet, but they're getting there. keep it up with the videos!

  • that sounds like something my bass player would actually want to do! (Our bassist and rhythm guitarist are not friends of metal)

  • ur pinchs are pretty meh they dont sound like they add to much i got a video with bass pinch and it doesn't sound like that

  • well their not in context with anything. Plus I have no effects on my bass....

  • ya still though the only reason i showed u the one with the effects was cuz its the only one i got on my youtube thing but try my trick of placing the string in between ur index nail makes it louder its my trick

  • one question.. when you were describing how any harmonic exists on the neck (ie. plucking the one on say G and doing a pinch on 13, on 7 and pinch on 19, etc). you fret and hold the first note right (the 1 or 7) ?

  • yeah, you have to hold the note. Trying putting a capo on your bass, then play harmonics, you'll quickly see what pinch harmonics are all about...

  • birdland riff very nice man!

  • victor wooten caint do that!! lol Thanks alot dude

  • victor wooten can do anything

  • Can he fly? =P

  • yup...he's the wootmeister...

  • jaco pastorius wud wipe the floor with wooten

wooten really isnt anything special, i dnt get why everyones liek so amazed

  • welll yeah ! even wootmeister would agree with ya there as would i

  • yes, I agree that jaco could wipe the floor with Wooten, he has skill in his own right. he is a great bassist.

  • if he has a plane! :D

  • Victor can so do that. You obviously know nothing about Wooten.

  • show me a video where he can do that, or says he can....

  • this video went right on my favorites. you, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • nice video man thanks a lot helped a a lot lolz...ty

  • lol this guy sounds like a raper to me idk y

  • you legend! this lessons taught me heaps, thank you!

  • Awesome video, really informative!

  • very helpful,

    u know ur shit

  • great lesson. that last technic was just what i was looking for, thx

  • nice icp shirt. very well video aswell

  • great job...really! thanks

  • awesome video very informative thanx.

  • Hey there fellow LRRG, We have a technical player here, i like it. Keep up the good work!

O by the way this drummer gives you a loud 5/5

  • How do you get such loose string tension on a 6 string?

  • not sure what you mean, but I guess just from messing around with the bridge.

  • great video! love your teaching

  • Haha nice video ninja!!!

    Juggalo woop woop!

  • i used to have that shirt!

  • much easier to do some of these with witch nails lol? ill stick with jacos cus i dont have very long nails cause its uncomfortable

  • well I'm used to it ;)

I use the Jaco one the most actually. it makes it really easy to play with chords

  • well, that was basically the best instructional bass video I've seen on youtube. *sits on hands, is stumped*

  • Nice vid :) The last method you show is used by classical guitarists, and has been around for ages. Just in case you were interested :)

  • I learned a "steve bailey" type method as a classical guitarist, as it fits in with classical RH position.

The last method puts the RH completely out of position. However folk guitarists, who have a more curled along-the-strings hand position can use it more comfortably.

  • you're a good guy, excellent video. a guitarist friend taught me the fucked way of pinching you show at the end, will check out steve bailey method/tunes pronto

p.s stay off the chilli, tis not worth it

  • well done!

  • GREAT VID!!

    ! :o!

  • Thanks a bunch man, this really helped alot. And just wonderin, how long have you been playing?

  • 'bout 6 years or so

  • Playing with your thumb, AND using fingers to play pinch harmonics? haha, wow

    Skillful

  • One more thing. You should change the title of this video to "How to play 4 kinds of pinch harmonics on a bass". I bet you would get more hits. You are giving an instruction, so you should advertise that. Trust me.

  • thats the same thing.

  • Very nice, Trevor. Goes to show that you are the technique master!

  • In your next video, could you explain what intervals each harmonic hits? Like the 5 and 12 hit octaves, and 7 hits the fifth plus an octave, but what about the others? Personally, thinking about stuff like this in terms of intervals makes it a lot easier to integrate into playing. For me, at least. Thanks.

  • well it boils down to actual notes. like the harmonic on 4,9,16 are all the same note 16 or B on the G string and so on and so forth. The harmonic on 7 is the same as that fret an octave up or 19. so it would be in order from highest to lowest: D,A,E,B

if you can fret 2.3 harmonic is the 2nd octave or the octave above the 24th fret.

  • how the fuck are you doing pinch harmonics without a pick?

  • with my fingers

  • Oh snap. Pwn!

  • I've been wanting to learn how to do these for months. Very informative video. I've always wondered how Sheehan did those tapping harmonics...

  • thx that was really informative, good job, waiting for another vid
