I was just listening to the Bobby Darin version, and I started thinking about what it would sound
like if Frank was singing it. Bobby was very good and the recording was not the best, so Im not going to say one is better then the other. Had frank been 20 years younger....yes !!!!
I was listening to this track in various Barbershop arrangement, but the Master himself shows how it really should be sung. Thanks so much Ford4312 for putting this recording in my sight.
I have listened to other fine artists sing this song, but this is my favorite version sung by Frank Sinatra. It sounds as if he is truly reflecting about a love in his life that he had "Once upon a time" and the feeling in his voice is beautiful, as well as the arrangement of the music. Brings tears to one's eyes. Great recording from a great talent, Frank Sinatra.
My high school choir is singing "Once Upon A Time" for our upcoming spring concert & everytime we rehearse it, I swear my eyes water up. I have to restrain myself from crying. It's so haunting and sad...
Glad to have a chance finally to hear Sinatra's version of this wonderful song. I still think John Gary's is the most beautiful rendition I've ever heard of it. Sinatra's version is more of a slow dance tune because the rhythm drives it. Hear the brush on the drum? Come sway with me, come sway, let's sway away.... Gary's version is more interpretive--for listening, not dancing. Sinatra's accompaniment is a little overpowering, as well.
@lundehund44 Range is by FAR not everything. Look at kurt moll, he has a voice like a piano. Does that make him BETTER than Frank Sinatra or John Gary? Not at all.
In 1980's I had a whole lot of vinyl & I had the LP that had this version of Frank Sinatra's 'Once Upon A Time"... I was pregnant with my son PeterJason & I shared this & so many other genre's with him while I had him as a 'captive audience"

This is as sad as it gets, thinking back to a time when love was young and innocent and not self conscious....it never comes again.

One of my all time favorite songs. Great lyrics and melody, then toss The Chairman in and you have perfection.
