@MARMARR1 wtf are you talking about..corporate america? I'm not laying claim on discovery of the man...I'm saying he wasn't trying to get noticed in the US. I don't give a shit who discovered him!
music is better when the person playing has had no lessons or good equipment because it develops into a super uniqe style just like steve and it also could develop into a whole new breed of music, i honestly think that seasick steve is one of the true music idols in the world not like the fake no-skill music today!
@newblues48 actually, he was just getting discovered in America, playing the 'chitlin' circuit, and played with Little Richard before he was in England. Have you read the book, Room Full of Mirrors? He was wowing the audiences in the US already! His star was already beginning to rise before he was in England. That's how he got noticed, playing at the Wha in New York; and from there his star continued to rise in England.
@mikeslaine79 samthing happened in the blues boom of the sixties.reason is the brits appreciate good music, the yanks dont know what they have, till someone shows them
@retardedjoe12 Too true. If it wasn't for an episode of Top Gear on BBC, I would never have heard of of Steve over here. Unfortunately it seems (to me at least) the music industry in the USA is more interested in a performer's looks than talent. Performers like Seasick are often relegated to gigs in roadhouses.
What a cool guy! He has such a gentle demeanor. I am so glad that a guy like this gets the attention he deserves. It would be nice if we could have recognized his talents here in the U.S. Unfortunately here he would have been just another novelty. I am proud to see that this purely American genre can be appreciated on a global scale. Just takes the right performer.
guys like this existed throughout the 50's and 60's - why did it take so long to recognize them, we seem to be heaping all our overdue applause on this guy! still better late than never.
He's great. Rocks hard, but can play gentle. Fantastic singer too - real soulful style. I like 1Holydiver1's analysis.
My mates tell me I'm going to look like him in about 5 years (bit of a mixed compliment: he's a good looking guy right enough, but I'm still in my 40s lol).
This guy wasn't even recognise in his own country. I'm so happy for him and if you look at or listen to his interviews so is he. He loves playing to lots of people and has waited a long time to do so. Big up Stevo.
@solidinformant from his story it doesn't sound like he tried to break out in the US...sounds like his story is more of a chance performance leading to tour dates there.
@jamirocat Listen to his albums fella, he tells lots of stories. He'd been playing in the US all his life (He's 67), not many people thought he was anything special which I find incredible.
@solidinformant well, I don't know what venues he was playing, maybe somewhere in California or Washington, but nowhere else that I've seen. I just checked his bio and it doesn't seem like he played in many states. So i wouldn't be surprised that most people in the US never heard of him.
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH that is so awesome, i love seasick steve and he deserves the award more than any of the posers who are nominated. he is now no doubt a genuine blues legend, i absolutely adore his music and the idea of him recording with jack white is just mouth watering :P
he may deserve it, but i dont think he would want it. Especially with the rampant commericialism and shallow nature of the brits awards. Can you see him fitting in with the whole 'uk celebrity' scene. He is about the music and dosent care about awards, or to be honest, probably dosent care if he plays a gig to 5 people or 50,000 people. When Jo whiley starts going on about him then its bad.
allright mate calm down i was only saying how much i like him. it is clear he is becoming a bigger and bigger star but its also clear he isnt gonna suddenly become a star milking it for all its worth, he will always be about the music and awards are a show of what a great job he has done, they arent something to avoid. he's clearly not even phased by it in that interview but its still an honour to be recognised in the way he has been.
yea, but i really do think its just a phase within the british music scene. You know, the ricky martin, billy ray sirus sort of thing. I dont think there is any future for this kind of music within the mainstream british music industry, just a bit of a gimic value. Where as in other countries, they actually like it, not just convince themselves they like it.
well its not just a phase, blues is never a gimic because blues is always alive, granted your not gonna catch seasick up on stage with bb king or buddy guy cos its a different area of blues but its still the root of all music and it will never die but yeah getting blues into the mainstream is just about impossible, only stevie ray vaughn was on his way to doing that untill he lost his life :/ but its not completely impossible just a very big task
For every pop star there are a number of Steve's that go unrecognized, sad really. I found him a week or so ago by chance, life is good.
