There's a phrase that young people like to use now that goes "keepin' it real" and I've also heard the term "real talk". That's what Cosby has been doing. You can't get to some people any other way. Another way to put it is "tough love". No body wants to hear that they've been f'in up, but sometimes that's exactly what you need to hear.
People have been talking to black people like the commentator has said, and it hasn't worked either. Bill Cosby when he produced A Different World proabably did more to change young black kids perception of higher education than any living human being,
You people are not getting my point at all. Bill Cosby's anger is not going to change the hearts and minds of children in todays society. If you want real change without turning this into taking children from their homes or creating booty camp like orphanage then we must explain why they are the way they are.
Bill is mad and pissed just like my parents who love me to death get pissed and go off on me when I'm acting a fool. He's mad and angry because he cares about what we are doing to ourselves. Those who don' t speak up vigilantly, don't give a crap about our self destruction. There are plenty of blacks celebs in big houses and limos who never speak out because they don't give a rats azsh*! about us! Why not down them instead of the man who's trying to help? You're a Fool!
Troy Shaw, you are what's wrong with people today. As soon as a black man tries to be pro-active in doing something for himself or for the plight of black people, you get black individuals such as yourself bringing him down instead of supporting him. You Troy Shaw are exactly like the kid who calls the other kid who is studying, "trying to act white". Bro, just shut up & go crawl under a rock. You're useless to black people.
@carl1095 I find it hard to believe some of the responses. Carl, Bills methods just isn't going to work with the kind of kids and families he is referring to. People in these kinds of situations must understand HOW THE HELL THEY GOT THERE, to ever go through the process of healing. Bills tough love approach is just going to piss them off and may get him SHOT...
@SAMLLC67 How 'bout both approaches working in tandem? A lot of these kids do need a history lesson and a lot need a good kick in the backside as well. Many DO know HOW they got there but are using that as an excuse. Keep blaming the white man and the system. Yeah there is a system in place but why aren't you something about it? That's right, you need a sobering message like Mr Cosby is delivering. There are too many black leaders feeding this victim mentality in black people.
This guy is a moron. WHO CARES WHY? When someone gets rushed into the hospital from a gunshot-we don't sit around and say why did he get shot; instead, we fix the problem. Obviously, there are advantages to what this guy has said, but to say the bill cosby is wrong because he didnt wholly dedicate his short 5-6 minute speeches to this tangent dynamic is nothing more than moronic. Thumbs down this video and listen to cosby. Im half black and I got into harvard, we all can rise up.
Dark whoever you are, the only idiot here is you. No, I am not a homosexual - that defense mechanism does not work on me. The science that you cite is impractical despite what authority that you consider knowledgeable. At one time there were ignorant, but prominent and well established authorities that stated that Africans were subhuman. Just because those authorities had social status did not mean that their ignorance was correct. Look, you came from a make and a female sexual interaction. The
behind wondering why others besides Bill Cosby weren't sending up warning smoke signals. It is way past time telling Black folks all the nice things that the few are doing. We need to yell at the top of our lungs, jump up and down, grab and shake, and do whatever us necessary to awaken the sleeping Black Rip Van Winkles before it is way too late. There's not much time. The ship is leaving the dock and only a few have boarded, while the masses have not yet obtained their boarding passes.
fruit. Industry has set up labor forces abroad that do everything from answer calls regarding computer issues to reading X-rays. If these powerful companies left Europe at one time and setup shop on this continent - once a wilderness - what makes you think that those same powers won't again establish new Americas, so to speak, in other lands and not miss a beat. We are beyond urgency, Black folks must act emergently by preparing themselves for the next big shift in world economy or else be left
First of all, this young man needs to get informed about who and what Dr. Cosby us and has been to the Black community. You should be sounding the alarm along with Bill "Fire!" Americans are no longer at the pinnacle of world society. This is now a global market and industry does not need or require unqualified Americans anymore whether Black or White. We are on competition with the world and there are a lot of hungry people out there who are displacing Americans in all areas, not just picking
This guy is an idiot. What happened was that Affirmative Action convinced black people that they are children that have to be taken care of by white liberals, and welfare and other supposedly well-meaning programs provided a disincentive for people to work, to have children in wedlock, and to support their children. Why do that when the govt. will do it for you?
The brother asked the question "What happened"? Well I challange any all to view "Race, Class, and Opportunity with John Powell (ALL PARTS) and then look at "Structural Racism: The Role of Race in Public Policy" right here on youtube for that answer. You'll discern that the problem of race has been systemic and institutional for years. The problem is, in order to decode who is calling the shots, you have to dig deep and most do not want to do that!!
Hello hbk4y2k, this is Troy. We have to use a different approach when trying to community to a people that have been taught to depend on the system for their survival. I believe in proper english, it's not white nor is it black to speak properly. People who use slang language in their everyday life and in every situation need to be re-educated about how the system really works for them. You will not get the right reaction from the people Bill is speaking to if you be-little or be-rate them.
Maybe he's out there 'cause his son was murdered? Maybe it took a tragedy like that to have him open his eyes and realize just how messed up things are?
I notice you speak very eloquently, may I ask you personally: How do you feel about the people Bill Cosby talks about? The "Who dis" "We be" "Know-mean" type people out there? Is it harder for us to learn proper grammar, or should white folks give us a medal? Or maybe you're just a man who sees that's just not the way...?
this commentator is an piece of crap, excuse making assbag. bill cosby is the one of the most sane voices of our society, no matter what your ethnic back ground is.
@Dramactica you get out you racist fuck. he doesn't have a point, he's whining and making himself sound weak and victimized. portraying any American group as a victim is an illusion propagated by the liberal democratic party in order to get votes, and to keep people from thinking for themselves.
additionally, it would behoove you to learn proper English. "He" = singular. "Have" = plural (more than one person.)
You need to captialize your sentences because it is the one of the foundation of a complete sentense. Also, you need to misplace a comma to a period on the second sentences.
@Dramactica great comeback, racist idiot! it only took you a week - i'm surprised your brain didn't implode from all that thinking!! some things to remember:
1. capitalization is not heard when speaking; i can still get a main point across without sounding like an ignorant, racist, victimized fuck. unlike you ("he have a point").
2. none of my punctuation is wrong. you're just stupid
3. it's spelled "sentence", you're still a racist/ignorant douche, and you need to listen to Bill Cosby.
NO. You are the one racist. You proably listen to Bill's words without looking at it in another way. These people are working hard for their children. They are poor, but they are giving their best to their children and hoping for a future.
Bill and you are looking for propaganga. You are using politics to bring down poor African Americans. If bill want to help, why he bitiching on a program such as Meet the Press that majority of African Americans don't watch?
@Dramactica I'm racist? really? What other way is there to look at it? And how can you generalize what "african americans" watch? how do you even know what my ethnicity is? you're probably some ignorant, liberal retard who thinks Black Americans can't think for themselves and "need people to guide them." I never said there weren't people working hard for their lives - and neither did Cosby. If you actually listen to what he says, he says we need to be accountable and not expect handouts.
Bill Cosby speaks about the need for blacks to realize that it is high time to get themselves together and stop the "POOR ME I'M BLACK" thing. The video also the fact that BET, through its videos, is pointing to blacks as people who just want to party, wear shiny clothes an jewelry, drive cars they can't afford, and who are promiscuous.
Also in regards to Tony Shaw's comment about Cosby, "Who is this guy to come in here and talk to us like this...?"
Cosby is a black man who "made it" without resorting to criminal enterprise, and without compromising his identity. He's a self-made man. He also did it at a time when education and employment opportunities for black people in this country were... shall we say, not as "diverse" as they are in 2010. So there is no excuse for his detractors to make any character assassinations.
Also I would like to point out that the "dirty laundry" that Bill Cosby has been "airing" publicly has been known to white people and to other communities in this country all along; it is painfully obvious in many cases.
100% of what Bill Cosby said on the issue is true. A lot of black people in this country have a culture of pride in ignorance and in criminal behavior. The lack of parenting is a direct result of this. Attempts by black people to improve themselves through professional education and careers, including speaking proper english as a matter of course, is frowned upon as "acting white." This further contributes to the downfall of black communities. There is nothing racist about this view.
Some people are upset because he further unveiled some of the issues going on in our community. As a tradition most of us have been raised to keep our dirty laundry to ourselves, forever a tradition, and what he did was not follow that guideline and speak out about it. I'm so sick of perpetually hearing some these excuses. It is not BILL COSBY'S job to continuously be the voice to point out OUR wrongs, take some responsibility for yourself! That's what my Mother is for.
BILL COSBY HAS ALWAYS BEEN HONEST THUS FAR OF WHAT I'VE SEEN AND READ. THE MAN SHOULDN'T HAVE TO HOLD YOUR HAND & SPEAK IN A SUGAR COATED MANNER TO DELIVER WHATEVER MESSAGE HE HAS. sO MANY PEOPLE WANT TO GET MAD AT WHAT HE HAD TO SAY, BUT WHO DENIED THAT IT WAS TRUE. YOU WISH TO BE SENSITIVE WHEN SOMEONE IS ATTEMPTING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING VIABLE YOU COMPLAIN "WELL HE SAID IT MEAN". YOU STILL CAN'T HEAR THE MESSAGE FOR SAKE OF YOUR QUICK TO ASSUME IGNORANCE. GROW UP & LEARN TO LISTEN.- sTOLEE
@yikaALO- my point is 1. Bill Cosby has done a lot not only for African Americans but for America, and 2. You have to be direct when addressing issues as big as what Cosby is trying to address. I didn't mention civil liberties. I only referenced MLK and MX to point out you have to be direct, not pussy foot around, and Rosa to demonstrate the effect one person can have, like what Bill Cosby is trying to do. I think Troy Shaw is the one needing a reality check for coming down on Bill Cosby!
ACCEPT THE REALITY WHO YOU ARE AND MOVE ON. THE RICH WILL ABIDE THE WEALTH, WHILE THE EDUCATED WILL ABIDE THE RICH AND THE POOR WILL ALWAYS FOLLOW BOTH UN REALISTIC.
Here's something that can cure 90% of the problem in the USA:
VIBRATORS and BIRTH CONTROL.
Cosby complains about teenage pregnancy. But how are you going to tell the kids NOT to have SEX, when (as Cosby refers to Richard Pryor) they JUST WANT TO CUM!!!!!!
Give VIBRATORS to teenage girls who are at-risk. MASTURBATION is a better alternative to having sex with a stupid boy.
The problem has not ALWAYS been this bad. That's sort of an insult to all the great black leaders of the past. Secondly, the media in most cases is a reflection of popular culture. It's very difficult to social engineer pop culture from the top down. TV executives did not invent thug street culture. Third, people like Cosby did try to portray an educated, empowered black family; Cosby has done his share. Why is this Cosby's responsibilty? How about practicing more personal responsibility?
Basically, blacks want it easy. Not easier... just easy. Everything must be handed down- from privileges to their not being responsible for significant tasks that render every American an aware & productive workhorse.
I hope that others follow in Bill's shoes to hold all people responsible for what they could do better, instead of blaming their problems on outside forces. Sometimes it takes only one person to stand up, and others will then follow suit. I think Rosa Parks would be proud of Bill Cosby. And disappointed in Troy Shaw.
And I'm sorry, but is there really a discreet way to address something so negative? If you try to tip toe around things, you won't be taken seriously and your point lost. MLK and Malcolm X wouldn't have gotten very far if they had said, "um, excuse me... but.... I kinda sorta have a wish for, um, equal treatment, that is, if it's ok with you? I hope you are not mad..." I respect Bill Cosby for being brave to point out major flaws when it seems no one else has the guts to do so.
@marieskee22 CIVIL LIBERY AND REALITY CHECK HAS NOTHING IN COMMON, WHAT ARE YOU REALLY SAYING? BE CLEAR WITH YOUR MESSAGES AND FOCUS WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO SAY.
Which bring us to the 2000's, where Bill Cosby has been asked to give numerous graduation speeches at colleges. Actually, I couldn't think of a better person than Bill Cosby to speak out to Black people over problems he is concerned about.
60's- Cosby's first Black w/ a leading role in the TV series I Spy. 70's- Educational programming like The Electric Company & Picture Pages. 80's- TV show 'portrayed' doctor & lawyer wife with college bound children. (Apparently they studied.) The first to break out of the stereotypical Black shows like Good Times & What's Happening. 90's- Spin-off, A Different World, which centered around a Black college. (Again, studying.) Also made a series for preschoolers, Little Bill.
Blacks want to complain about racism and unfair this and unfair that. Blacks do it to themselves. Look at the movies, athletes and music they partake in..Blacks need to stand up and STOP each other !!!!
This guy is weird, he's saying that JUST because he's speaking out about he should be doing something to help, but obviously he isnt paying attention. Bill cosby goes to schools and speaks and can only do so much else. You can only help people who want to be helped. I agree with every single thing bill cosby said and I'm 100% black..
@Jharryia I'm hispanic and I just read one of his speeches and I was wondering how a black person would feel about what he said. I'm glad to see that some people are receptive of a message that is clear and true. I've seen black people, committed to study, who make it and make it good. I'm tired of seeing young single mothers curse at their children on the subway, like their babies are a curse on them. I think it's time people (in general and I also mean hispanics) took some responsibility.
An interesting point. Still, I'd say, better late than never, right? What use is there in blaming him for not doing more sooner? He was on drugs and womanizing for awhile there, in no condition to be an advocate for anything. Maybe he is going about it the wrong way. At least he's trying.
Say Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks were still alive and were in the same room with you. Are you seriously going to look them in the eye and tell them it's their fault for slowing down?
@diversitytvnet Why was it Bill's job to correct the mistakes of the parents of that generation. Even though it isn't his job, he's still trying to do something about it.
Why aren't you doing anything about it today? Why aren't you out there, helping him and making a statement instead of being an internet commentator?
@TheHiflyer89 you can't compare malcom x to rosa parks or dr. king. malcom x was a murderous muslim fundamentalist/terrorist and racist. dr. king and ms. parks were peaceful protestors.
While I don't agree with everything Troy said, his general premise is spot on.
Bill Cosby is not the first or that last black "leader" to speak about personable responsibility. Personally responsibility for example is part of the Nation of Islams general beliefs and Farrakhan often talks about the behaviors of black folk. The problem is, he also rightly criticizes white supremacy as being a factor in bad decision making of blacks.
The Black Panthers, The UNIA under Garvey was also a problem of black analysis and improvement. In fact, you will be hard press to find any black movement of any significance that didn't have self improvement as one of its main tenets.
The difference is they also offer a full analysis of white supremacy and how it affects black life. Cosby's basically gives lip service to the psychological impact of centuries of slavery, genocide, murder and repression and its current modus operandi.
Troy what movement do you want to continue here in 2010? What more do you want? Are you not happy till black people have "more" than white people? Look...we all have access to the same education. Use it or stay dumb. I don't know what to tell you. I read all the time and learn new things on my own without going to a school to do it. I tought myself web programming for instance.
@andruchina Well we all have greater education access than most other countries. I know for a fact there are a lot of people that wish they had the same education access as these black people do. No one can make anyone learn. So when a person isn't learning yet the books are right in front of you it is your own problem. No matter how much money you throw at that person they will not learn if they don't want to. It is common sense.
First he asks why didn't Bill Cosby didn't raise these issues decades ago. Then he recognizes that Cosby has been setting the example all these years. Cosby has been practicing what he is how preaching. Now he's tired and lashing out against those that continue to sell blacks short. Attacking him like this is stupid. His message has to be heard.
This is embarrassing. The unwillingness to acknowledge dirty laundry is a death sentence. Middle & upper middle class Blacks are leaving poorer neighborhoods in droves, leaving behind remnants and fragments of what once was. Their voices are drowned out from guys like this, so they choose the preferred option: exit.
This is a generational battle. The older generation agrees with Bill 100%. The next two generations dare not for it would then acknowledge its role in driving down Black American
@petenrita Bill Cosby is out of touch really much so he just said the shit that white folks want to say to assume that there is nothing wrong with blaCKS IN this country is ludicrous however its not as simple as Bill Cosby this government needs to acknowledge the damage done
This guy, the host, exemplifies everything that's wrong with the American black community: totally incapable and unwilling to start holding themselves to a higher standard of conduct.
This guy is an asshole. What's his name again? His show sucks. Anyway, Bill Cosby is as intelligent and eloquent as ever. To say "You're acting white" as a negative connotation puts black people off learning. If you're against Cosby on this one, you perpetuate instilling ignorant values in Black people.
@andruchina To answer the host's question, these kinds of problems are self-imposed.
People are giving into commercialism.
People are giving into racism and attacking each other.
People are drawing mental borders around white kids being superior at learning, causing black kids to reject learning.
If black people are ever going to break out of this slave-mentality, the need to reject all the intellectual impositions that society has been implanting in their minds!
It is hard for white people to speak out about these modern social issues, because they are immediately labeled as racist. More blacks like Cosby should speak out, and not criticize each other along the way.
As an person who has studied the Civil Rights Movement extensively I have come to the conclusion that the reason why the movement lost momentum is because there was no one with the charisma and influence to step in and fill the shoes of Martin Luther King. Instead it would appear as if the black community put their fate in the hands of predominately white Democrats, which like any political group has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.
I (born and raised Ghanaian) attend a predominantly black university in the south east. I don't wear shorts that are 3 sizes bigger than me(sag) and or t-shirts that look like night gowns. I don't turn my cap backwards or walk with "swagger" as it's said. Many of my classmates see me as "not black enough"... so in American society , a person's dressing determines his true identity?? I am many at times amused and confused when such comments are made. I like classical and rap, Ghanaian music.
@kakompo Exactly! I've never understood this whole "you're not black enough" thing. Why are people stereotyping themselves? I don't get it! It just makes it easier for someone else to stereotype you!
This is my question to this presenter. If he didn't talk about it in the 80's and 70's .. well why not now?? The presenter here is taking a defensive stance instead of addressing the problem. The problem is already there so why not talk about solutions rather than dancing around the problem " we know to be true" as he said?
This is all inclusive of the New World Order. From code-speak to the commercials, films, etc. that we see on the "idiot box," yes, all this is being done tand the message from Cosby and others bears out that there IS a segment of black folks that are apathetic, disenfranchised and reticient in CHANGING their mind-sets to "get on board" in helping us to surge forth and to move FORWARD. We CAN do this!!!
I understand what you are stating by your given examples: a "lock-out" in society, esp. black males; the 1980's scandal of bringing dope into the black community, the Tuskegee Experiment--this by itself is telling. The continual attempts to annihilation and//or marginalize black people. We are not monolithic.
It is a fact. Examine many of the comments here from the negativity of the usage of the "N" word to enhancing long-standing stereotypes about black people.
The cause is slavery which was the dismanteling of the African identity that we once had. today you have youth identifiying with counterproductive behavior that they believe is being black problem we face are so much deeper than the Tv news and Mr. Cosby's ignorance and socalled firm stance are only popular because that is what white folks want to say anyway. he disounts ebonics as if it has no crediblity as if it is only brokn englsh he seems2believ tht da only way 2 b postve is to emulat whits
Who the hell is this guy to judge Bill Cosby? He's been a positive role model for black Americans for decades. He's not insulting the black culture, he's inspiring them. It's about time that a generation of people wake up and smell the coffee. The government has set black people up to fail, hence project buildings and public housing. Put them in a crowded cage, a quarentine, cut off from society in their own little world. No more. Viva Obama baby, let's put an end to the mess.
Judge is a strong word also he has been a positive role model period not only for blacks he is insulting himself because he see's it as a black problem its much deeper than that
You ever note that, as black people, when there are attempts to become cohesive in taking pro-active positions in trying to solve what has long plagued many black communities, that ALL of the nay-sayers appear to wreak havoc and to BRING discord?
He gets in his limosine, private jet, and goes to his mansion because he busted his ass and earned it! Quit making excuses, blaming tv, and the "white mans " idea of what we are, and lets be accountable. God bless
First of all, your ignorance is evident just by refering to a human being as a "black." Second of all, this is clearly not true. Third of all, the reason why education is not a priority to black Americans is because since we first brought them here, we have fed into their minds that they are intellectually inferior. We've set up their communities to fail. If you flipped history and it was white people in the same position, you'd get the same result. Nurture versus nature. Study up, bud.
wht folks need to get off of this we brought you here crap the majority of blacks in this countries ancestors where here (17th-19th cen) before the majoirity of Whites whose ancestors came in the 19th and 20th centuries not all whites but most surely brought you here ha most whites were in no positonto bring anyone anywhere
@richbullva. You really think that black people were in the United States before white people? Then there is really no point in arguing with you. Because you, sir, are an idiot. You can't make up history to win an argument.
@relentlessreign23 no i don't what made you say that there were blacks here who came with whites in the 16th century who were not enslaved, but also i dont discount the possibility that Africans sailed here before Colombus its not very unpractical dude, Colombus reported sights of blacks as well and quite a few indians said the same its not that big of a deal to me,its funny made up history is what we learn in school
@relentlessreign23 But isn't time that they took responsibility? Or do we have to tell them now "you're not inferior, you're smart". Isn't that thinking for them? They have a choice and whatever choice they make, they shouldn't blame it on someone else!
I want to talk about it how many IQ test have you administered and also i am black i have oly taken one formally and thats was when i went into the military i don't buy it bud i have met way to many whites who were clueless i don't think that there color made them smarter than me lets talk about it you got what you want lets go
"Don't kill the messenger." Cosby is not perfect. There ARE problems in the BLACK diaspora that have been ignored for far too long. He only brought yhr message. Individually and collectively, "accountability" needs to become the rule of the day in many black communities.
where is a real black community located what we need to do is form black communities accountability lol tell that to a 13 year old whose mother had him when she was 12 its alot deeper than Cosby much deeper
Bill is standing up to talk about the problem. He has done his part how dare you say it wasn't enough. He has had TV shows, Fat Albert, The Cosby's, Different World. He has written childrens books "Little Bill" Who else has done these things. He donates to HBCU's It was much more then others have done. Bill has payed his dues. He has a right to speak out. You might not like what he says but he has a right. Why sugar coat the truth. I believe he speaks out of concern and love for black people.
It's not about the past...what matters is that Bill Cosby recognizes that there is a problem and he is now doing something about it. We need to focus on the present and let the past stay where it is...THE PAST!!!
the past stay where it is you don't cut the weed at the top you pull out the roots as well Bill Cosby is indeed passionate but he is ridiculous in that he ignores the causes
Do you even understand what you're saying? He's not ignoring the causes... It's not about playing the hand you've been dealt, it's about changing the damn cards. We need to take matters into our own hands to better our community.
Look obviously you think i mean the problems that everyone talks about no father in the home no this no that no sir i believe it is much deeper Bill Cosby is only being vocal about the way all americans feel about niggers and the unfortunate thing is even you don't seem to realize that, what i am sayin is Bill Cosby himself is just as messed up as any other black person he only believes that he is fine. He wouldn't have made that statement if he had the understanding of what the problem realy is
i have to comment on this one again THE PAST tell me one thing befor you now that is not a product of the past the past is the only real thing that we have sir no other peopel want o forgewt there past they are stregnthed by it we need to realizew just how important our past is that would help. It would also help Mr. Cosby
like the man said, where was bill cosby in '70s, '80s, and '90s? i guess he was too busy making his money, and challenging black ppl to do better for themselves would have hurt his public image and eventually his earning potential. but now that he's out of the public eye, he wants to judge black ppl? i'm sorry bill, ur about 30yrs too late
Let's see you go out and do something. In that Meet-The-Press interview, listen to his story about the limo driver. The driver knew that the problem wasn't the white kids singing along with the rap; it was the Black rapper who made the CD. That rapper has turned his color into a freak show.
Bill owes an apology? How absurd. Cosby didnt father children with teenagers and leave them. He didnt drop out of school, or let his kids drop out of school. He rides his limousine to his mansion, but he earned his limousine and mansion. His mother was a maid and his father an Army cook hardly inherited wealth.
Cosby pointed out the choices that all people have, choices that determine our future. Can we all be Cosby? No. Can we all be self-sufficient and productive? If we want to.
Well, Cosby is right. I know it feels like a knife in the ribs to many black people, but it needs to be said. Someone needs to shake these people out of their complacency so they stop worrying about everyone else. Stop having 6 kids by 6 fathers and abandoning your kids. You can blame everyone else for your problems, or you can get busy makin it happen. Excuses were yesterday, today you're wasting my time.
Oh so you want to act like your race is high and mighty huh.why don`t your people stop killing Innocent Iraqes,Stop committing Terrorist attacks and blaming it on middle-eastern people like 9/11.Your race caused most of the problems in the black community.Ya`ll shipped the drugs in our community ,Created AIDS,White owned record labels bring out mostly gangster rappers which have negative influences on our
youth, and used welfare to break up our families so the kids could come out dysfunctional.
Yeah, keep blaming everyone but yourselves for not going to school and for aspiring to be gangsters rather than doctors or engineers. White criminals traffic in drugs, but guess what, we hate that trash just as much as we hate black criminals. AIDS is an AFRICAN disease, i.e. it originated in Africa. While you're at it, why don't you blame the British Empire for the weather. I'm sure the whiteys made it bad just to punish you.
"AIDS is an AFRICAN disease"wrong it was in a indian newspaper in 84,london times in 87,and a canadian newspaper in 08 that America created the disease for genocide.Boyd Graves got one of the the Documents on his website.Watch lance Horeowitz(a white Phisician)"in lies we trust documentary"on youtube he`ll show you one of the documents and give you some details.aatleast Some of those documens are from the library of congress.
And to reply to your other comments Google National security memorandum 46 these documents are from the library of congress. These documents clearly says we cannot let blacks in these U.S and Africa unite. And Google FBI cointelpro documents .these documents are from the FBI headquarters in Philly. Those documents clearly say "We have to prevent the rise of a good black leader. Why do you think they killed Martin Luther king ,Malcolm x and other black leaders and put in there puppets?
There seems to be a common misconception about what assimilation is. Its not about black culture assimilating into white culture. Its about the minority assimilating into the majority. It is just a coincidence that the majority is white. Assimilation has nothing to do with race. If we could stop confusing social issues with racial issues a lot more would be accomplished.
Why is your young punk ass asking why Bill stopped when you never even got started... you have no platform to critisize. And there you go again, an EXCUSE, shed the blame off to "portrayl", the big giant nasty "media".. its their fault that black kids dont think they should study, not the parents... just someone else to blame for the way your kid thinks instead of yourself. Don't you understand that THAT is the fundamental thing Cosby is fighting for? ACCOUNTABILITY
I think we should dwell on the past and keep it around for every generation so we can always be the minority but we need to figure out what to do with the mexicans now that they are the number one minority the politicians wont worry about our votes as much and ponder to them. Keep the past alive. Peace out and let me get a shout out to my dogpound.
I also think the whites on this board need to shut up, read and observe and THINK about what black people are saying since we know our condition better then you can ever hope to. We do NOT need whites to tell us who our leaders are and who we should follow.
You are coming off as being very paternalistic, which is a mainstay of white supremacist attitudes. Stop it.
Bill Cosby is not someone I look to for political/social commentary. He is an entertainer, period.
Also Bill owns stock in Coke which employs death squads in Latin America to union bust. I'd rather die then to aspire to help US corporations murder people of color for profit.
Lastly, I do not quite understand the rest of your comment? When did I bring up slavery and why isn't the legacy of black subjugation not relevant to this conversation?
Yes, everyone feels the same way about crimes in certain neighborhoods. Everyone down to the very people in those neighborhoods. There are many of black organizations that work to uplift the black community in these working class and poor black neighborhoods. However, I think that the majority of people who are annoyed outside of these neighborhoods are more concerned with how it makes them look as a blacks since we are always reduced, seen as a monolith, profiled & stereotyped.
There is a lot of diversity as well as division. I believe that age, class and gender has divided us. It divides most however it is a detriment to use as a group when we are divided.
It is overblown many sociologists and teachers have said so. Our society has been using it to claim that black children just dont want to learn which is not true. When our society makes such sweeping allegations. It is prejudice and causes issues in regards to compassion, the creation of programs and funding for mostly black schools. I work with young mostly black students, I never hear it. I asked them about it, they said that it doesn't happen in their school.
Lovetruth86, I've found that most "black" adults raised in a "SINGLE PARENT FAMILY" where as the mother is the head of household, seem to disagree with MR COSBY. While "black" adults raised in a 2 parent home seem to agree with MR COSBY. In other words "BLACKS" raised under a DOMINANT FEMALE INFLUENCE tend to get OFFENDED by a FIRM Masculin speech patern of any BLACK MALE.
Yet ANY race of adults raised in a 2 parent family find a Masculin male speech patern to be normal.
Or mabye, they are not offended and believe that Cosby does not undertsand certain underlaying problems and societal issues. I did a study on it and that is what I found last year.
I love Bill, for his Courage to say the things that need to be said in the black Community... for you whites that don't know the majority of black in America agree with and think like Mr. Cosby, he just has a platform to display it. The community that he is talking about, are children or in a childs mind state. I love Mr. Cosby for standing up and providing this guidance for all of us... Black or white.
Many people on a regular basis speak abotu the issues in the community. There are thousands of organizations, community leaders, activists, churches and youth groups that discuss it. It is not about courage. Many of the people in these groups are millions of times more effective than Cosby and dont agree with some of his generalizations, conclusions or methods. Explain that, since you think that before Cosby and during Cosby's crusade, everybody was sitting around.
I never said that others in the community don't address this issue, and I never said that everybody was just sitting around. and who said that what Bill Cosby said even applied to everyone in the black community. what I do know is that the only people that took offence to what was said are those that are disconnect with the black community. If Reverend Pork Chop said it nobody would have said anything about it.
I tried hard to listen to you and understand you. But I am bewildered. Why do you have a need to attack Bill Cosby? You need to first stop and ask yourself. Regarding why a black child would tell another black child that studying is acting white. This is more than likely because his black parents aren't making studying a priority in the home. What WE need to do is stop ridiculing other and clean out our own backyard.
Excuse me but you obviously are disconnected from the very same people you are talking about. The whole acting white thing has been blown out of proportion. I have actually come to the conclusion (with data) that it is a myth. Yes, people are called Oreos etc... I was called one. It had nothing to do with my education. It had to do with the way that I acted around other black people. I was taught that I was better than them.
LoveTruth You have replied to my comment I am interested in learning more about your position. But firstly if I am going to engage in a discussion I prefer to behave in a civil manner. I realize that these subjects are emotional and we are passionate. But we can not grow and learn if we are attacking one another. I am sure you are intelligent and I can learn a lot from you and your experience, but please don't attack me. You made a statement about me being disconnected. Dear I am a black women
That does not matter. I noticed and many have spoken about the class divide in the black community. You see much of that with some of what I see on this board. Their is a disconnect between black men and black women, black youth and black adults, black upper class and middle class vs. the black working class and the black poor. Until we are able to tackle this and build bridges, we are unable to reach one another, period.
I grew up in an upper class black family who could care less about black culture, history and traditions. They looked down on it. I hung out with white people etc... I was called an Oreo. It had nothing to do with studying. I have since learned better. There are many black youth who value learning and so do their parents. The idea that their is rampant black anti-intellectualism is not a fair statement. Learn your facts.
Nah, it's not a myth. I hail from SC and have been accused of 'acting white' for my tastes in music and mostly for being smart and studying.
Generally speaking, it's not just studying. Normally people say that to another black person (not just other black people!) when they do something that's not considered what a 'normal' black person would do.
I don't think Cosby was saying there is rampant anti-intellectualism amuck (look at him) he was just giving an example.
I was called an Oreo for my musical tastes and the fact that I did not have black friends in middle school. The name calling started by a white girl interestingly and everyone began following that. That was in middle school. I never got it in high school, college or work or in my social groups or at mostly black events or in everyday life. It never however had anyhting to do with education because in middle school the people who said that to me were schloars and got much better grades.
I love how you make generalizations like "black parents aren't making studying a priority in the home"....have you been to every single black home in the country? All of my friends who were black had parents who not only did that but constantly visted the school. Please stop making generalizations.
Are you saying I said 'black parents aren't making studying a priority in the home'? If so, show me where I stated that.
Obviously our experiences with out peers were different. I got it through elementary, middle and high school (college is a different world). A friend of mine wrote an article dealing with the topics as Cosby. She got so much flack over it, it was ridiculous. She was called a sell-out, a non-black, etc.
No, I haven't been to every black home, but I've seen both sides. (cont)
My dad was the type to encourage studying. He read to me almost every night before I started reading to myself.
We didn't live where the rest of our family did. We lived in an area between two affluent cities. When my dad went back to school, I saw a different side of the black community.
There, some parents weren't involved in their children's lives (notice I didn't say all). It was either they didn't care, they didn't have the time, other things to stress about, etc.
I'm not saying this applies to everybody. But from my experience with the people Cosby is talking about, it's not that they don't care. It's that there's no hope.
Trust me, I've had a teacher that tried to cut me down and I felt like shit. Just one negative word from a person you trust can destroy all dreams you had for yourself.
I'm greatful I wasn't in a school with a lot of teachers like that. Teachers aren't the cause, there are a lot of factors to consider.
Are you saying that this is only in the black community and that the black community is not under assault externally. I had to deal with the piercing issue of soft bigotry when it came to my white teachers and administration's low expectations of me. They constantly reduced me to stereotypes, made assumptions and dismissed me as irrelevant. I believe that we as black people have internalized this inferiority complex in the way in which we behave and treat one another all around.
If I didn't say it, then that's not what I meant. Perhaps you didn't see all the responses I left, but I included an anecdote about a teacher of mine, and what I observed in different types of schools.
I'm not sure where it comes from. It's easy to blame everything on the effects of slavery, but I believe it's more complicated than that. However, it doesn't take a genius to figure out they're related.
Of course, as you pointed out blacks care and of course there is a great deal of nihilism that exists. Where do you think it comes from and what do you think we as people can do to overcome the pervasiveness of it amongst some.
I feel that many are very sensitive and make assumptions. I have spoken to blacks who talk about their relationship with other blacks in this regard, I find that they come off as condescending and arrogant. I have spoken to them about that and have asked them if their attitude towards their own contributed to this rejection. Have they taken on the role of someone who looks down upon blacks like an oppressor? It is much deeper than some like to turn it into.
Yeah, and I used to be on of those people not too long ago based on my experiences. It wasn't a good place to be. I was hating my people and myself as well.
This situation is more complex than just saying 'slavery messed us up, we want an apology some money and everything will be hunky-dory.'
That's simply not true. There are at least two different worlds in the black community, but on some level we all feel the same when we hear about another crime, about drugs and guns etc.

NelsonStJames 3 weeks ago
People have been talking to black people like the commentator has said, and it hasn't worked either. Bill Cosby when he produced A Different World proabably did more to change young black kids perception of higher education than any living human being,
NelsonStJames 3 weeks ago

SAMLLC67 6 months ago
@SAMLLC67 How 'bout both approaches working in tandem? A lot of these kids do need a history lesson and a lot need a good kick in the backside as well. Many DO know HOW they got there but are using that as an excuse. Keep blaming the white man and the system. Yeah there is a system in place but why aren't you something about it? That's right, you need a sobering message like Mr Cosby is delivering. There are too many black leaders feeding this victim mentality in black people.

Well I challange any all to view "Race, Class, and Opportunity with John Powell (ALL PARTS) and then look at "Structural Racism: The Role of Race in Public Policy" right here on youtube for that answer.

Swiley117 1 year ago
Also I would like to point out that the "dirty laundry" that Bill Cosby has been "airing" publicly has been known to white people and to other communities in this country all along; it is painfully obvious in many cases.
Swiley117 1 year ago
100% of what Bill Cosby said on the issue is true. A lot of black people in this country have a culture of pride in ignorance and in criminal behavior. The lack of parenting is a direct result of this. Attempts by black people to improve themselves through professional education and careers, including speaking proper english as a matter of course, is frowned upon as "acting white." This further contributes to the downfall of black communities. There is nothing racist about this view.
Swiley117 1 year ago

Some people are upset because he further unveiled some of the issues going on in our community. As a tradition most of us have been raised to keep our dirty laundry to ourselves, forever a tradition, and what he did was not follow that guideline and speak out about it. I'm so sick of perpetually hearing some these excuses. It is not BILL COSBY'S job to continuously be the voice to point out OUR wrongs, take some responsibility for yourself! That's what my Mother is for.

MondoBeno 1 year ago
The problem has not ALWAYS been this bad. That's sort of an insult to all the great black leaders of the past. Secondly, the media in most cases is a reflection of popular culture. It's very difficult to social engineer pop culture from the top down. TV executives did not invent thug street culture. Third, people like Cosby did try to portray an educated, empowered black family; Cosby has done his share. Why is this Cosby's responsibilty? How about practicing more personal responsibility?

And I'm sorry, but is there really a discreet way to address something so negative? If you try to tip toe around things, you won't be taken seriously and your point lost.
The problem is, he also rightly criticizes white supremacy as being a factor in bad decision making of blacks.
muhcarl 2 years ago
The Black Panthers, The UNIA under Garvey was also a problem of black analysis and improvement. In fact, you will be hard press to find any black movement of any significance that didn't have self improvement as one of its main tenets.
The difference is they also offer a full analysis of white supremacy and how it affects black life. Cosby's basically gives lip service to the psychological impact of centuries of slavery, genocide, murder and repression and its current modus operandi.

Use it or stay dumb. I don't know what to tell you. I read all the time and learn new things on my own without going to a school to do it. I tought myself web programming for instance.
Noahedwinbeach2 2 years ago
@Noahedwinbeach2 I agree! We all have the same access to education, how come some communities are not doing better?
andruchina 1 year ago
@andruchina Well we all have greater education access than most other countries. I know for a fact there are a lot of people that wish they had the same education access as these black people do. No one can make anyone learn. So when a person isn't learning yet the books are right in front of you it is your own problem. No matter how much money you throw at that person they will not learn if they don't want to. It is common sense.
Noahedwinbeach2 1 year ago
and movies like Precious do not help to make black people look any better....

The next two generations dare not for it would then acknowledge its role in driving down Black American
petenrita 2 years ago
@petenrita Bill Cosby is out of touch really much so he just said the shit that white folks want to say to assume that there is nothing wrong with blaCKS IN this country is ludicrous however its not as simple as Bill Cosby this government needs to acknowledge the damage done

Truth not Temptation!

I like classical and rap, Ghanaian music.
kakompo 2 years ago
@kakompo Exactly! I've never understood this whole "you're not black enough" thing. Why are people stereotyping themselves? I don't get it! It just makes it easier for someone else to stereotype you!
andruchina 1 year ago
This is my question to this presenter. If he didn't talk about it in the 80's and 70's .. well why not now?? The presenter here is taking a defensive stance instead of addressing the problem. The problem is already there so why not talk about solutions rather than dancing around the problem " we know to be true" as he said?
kakompo 2 years ago
This is all inclusive of the New World Order. From code-speak to the commercials, films, etc. that we see on the "idiot box," yes, all this is being done tand the message from Cosby and others bears out that there IS a segment of black folks that are apathetic, disenfranchised and reticient in CHANGING their mind-sets to "get on board" in helping us to surge forth and to move FORWARD. We CAN do this!!!
SeptiaWoman 2 years ago
I understand what you are stating by your given examples: a "lock-out" in society, esp. black males; the 1980's scandal of bringing dope into the black community, the Tuskegee Experiment--this by itself is telling. The continual attempts to annihilation and//or marginalize black people. We are not monolithic.

Let's see you go out and do something. In that Meet-The-Press interview, listen to his story about the limo driver. The driver knew that the problem wasn't the white kids singing along with the rap; it was the Black rapper who made the CD. That rapper has turned his color into a freak show.
MondoBeno 2 years ago
Bill owes an apology? How absurd. Cosby didnt father children with teenagers and leave them. He didnt drop out of school, or let his kids drop out of school. He rides his limousine to his mansion, but he earned his limousine and mansion. His mother was a maid and his father an Army cook hardly inherited wealth.
Cosby pointed out the choices that all people have, choices that determine our future. Can we all be Cosby? No. Can we all be self-sufficient and productive? If we want to.

Yeah, keep blaming everyone but yourselves for not going to school and for aspiring to be gangsters rather than doctors or engineers.

Black or white.
couzinric999 3 years ago
Many people on a regular basis speak abotu the issues in the community. There are thousands of organizations, community leaders, activists, churches and youth groups that discuss it. It is not about courage. Many of the people in these groups are millions of times more effective than Cosby and dont agree with some of his generalizations, conclusions or methods. Explain that, since you think that before Cosby and during Cosby's crusade, everybody was sitting around.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
I never said that others in the community don't address this issue, and I never said that everybody was just sitting around. and who said that what Bill Cosby said even applied to everyone in the black community. what I do know is that the only people that took offence to what was said are those that are disconnect with the black community. If Reverend Pork Chop said it nobody would have said anything about it.
couzinric999 3 years ago
I tried hard to listen to you and understand you. But I am bewildered. Why do you have a need to attack Bill Cosby? You need to first stop and ask yourself. What WE need to do is stop ridiculing other and clean out our own backyard.

TheFashionistaChic,
Excuse me but you obviously are disconnected from the very same people you are talking about. The whole acting white thing has been blown out of proportion. I have actually come to the conclusion (with data) that it is a myth. Yes, people are called Oreos etc... I was called one. It had nothing to do with my education. It had to do with the way that I acted around other black people. I was taught that I was better than them.
Contd...
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
LoveTruth You have replied to my comment I am interested in learning more about your position. But firstly if I am going to engage in a discussion I prefer to behave in a civil manner. I realize that these subjects are emotional and we are passionate. But we can not grow and learn if we are attacking one another. I am sure you are intelligent and I can learn a lot from you and your experience, but please don't attack me. You made a statement about me being disconnected. Dear I am a black women
TheFashionistaChic 3 years ago
That does not matter. I noticed and many have spoken about the class divide in the black community. You see much of that with some of what I see on this board. Their is a disconnect between black men and black women, black youth and black adults, black upper class and middle class vs. the black working class and the black poor. Until we are able to tackle this and build bridges, we are unable to reach one another, period.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
I grew up in an upper class black family who could care less about black culture, history and traditions. They looked down on it. I hung out with white people etc... I was called an Oreo. It had nothing to do with studying. I have since learned better. There are many black youth who value learning and so do their parents. The idea that their is rampant black anti-intellectualism is not a fair statement. Learn your facts.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
Nah, it's not a myth. I hail from SC and have been accused of 'acting white' for my tastes in music and mostly for being smart and studying.
Generally speaking, it's not just studying. Normally people say that to another black person (not just other black people!) when they do something that's not considered what a 'normal' black person would do.
I don't think Cosby was saying there is rampant anti-intellectualism amuck (look at him) he was just giving an example.
lavinder11 3 years ago
I was called an Oreo for my musical tastes and the fact that I did not have black friends in middle school. The name calling started by a white girl interestingly and everyone began following that. That was in middle school. I never got it in high school, college or work or in my social groups or at mostly black events or in everyday life. It never however had anyhting to do with education because in middle school the people who said that to me were schloars and got much better grades.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
I love how you make generalizations like "black parents aren't making studying a priority in the home"....have you been to every single black home in the country? All of my friends who were black had parents who not only did that but constantly visted the school. Please stop making generalizations.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
Are you saying I said 'black parents aren't making studying a priority in the home'? If so, show me where I stated that.
Obviously our experiences with out peers were different. I got it through elementary, middle and high school (college is a different world). A friend of mine wrote an article dealing with the topics as Cosby. She got so much flack over it, it was ridiculous. She was called a sell-out, a non-black, etc.
No, I haven't been to every black home, but I've seen both sides. (cont)
lavinder11 3 years ago
My dad was the type to encourage studying. He read to me almost every night before I started reading to myself.
We didn't live where the rest of our family did. We lived in an area between two affluent cities. When my dad went back to school, I saw a different side of the black community.
There, some parents weren't involved in their children's lives (notice I didn't say all). It was either they didn't care, they didn't have the time, other things to stress about, etc.
lavinder11 3 years ago
I'm not saying this applies to everybody. But from my experience with the people Cosby is talking about, it's not that they don't care. It's that there's no hope.
Trust me, I've had a teacher that tried to cut me down and I felt like shit. Just one negative word from a person you trust can destroy all dreams you had for yourself.
I'm greatful I wasn't in a school with a lot of teachers like that. Teachers aren't the cause, there are a lot of factors to consider.
lavinder11 3 years ago
Are you saying that this is only in the black community and that the black community is not under assault externally. I had to deal with the piercing issue of soft bigotry when it came to my white teachers and administration's low expectations of me. They constantly reduced me to stereotypes, made assumptions and dismissed me as irrelevant. I believe that we as black people have internalized this inferiority complex in the way in which we behave and treat one another all around.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
If I didn't say it, then that's not what I meant. Perhaps you didn't see all the responses I left, but I included an anecdote about a teacher of mine, and what I observed in different types of schools.
I'm not sure where it comes from. It's easy to blame everything on the effects of slavery, but I believe it's more complicated than that. However, it doesn't take a genius to figure out they're related.
lavinder11 3 years ago
Of course, as you pointed out blacks care and of course there is a great deal of nihilism that exists. Where do you think it comes from and what do you think we as people can do to overcome the pervasiveness of it amongst some.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
I feel that many are very sensitive and make assumptions. I have spoken to blacks who talk about their relationship with other blacks in this regard, I find that they come off as condescending and arrogant. I have spoken to them about that and have asked them if their attitude towards their own contributed to this rejection. Have they taken on the role of someone who looks down upon blacks like an oppressor? It is much deeper than some like to turn it into.
LoveTruth86 3 years ago
Yeah, and I used to be on of those people not too long ago based on my experiences. It wasn't a good place to be. I was hating my people and myself as well.
This situation is more complex than just saying 'slavery messed us up, we want an apology some money and everything will be hunky-dory.'
That's simply not true. There are at least two different worlds in the black community, but on some level we all feel the same when we hear about another crime, about drugs and guns etc.
lavinder11 3 years ago
I tried hard to listen to you and understand you. But I am bewildered. Why do you have a need to attack Bill Cosby? You need to first stop and ask yourself.
