Hollywood is BLIND! they made that HORRENDOUS Dragon Ball movie, and haven't made an Escaflowne film (or trilogy) yet. Stupid American producers... ¬__¬
I LOVE this show escaflowne, and always will ! ! -3 with this ending, I do have my own ending in my head and it's great cuz Van and Hitomi are together in it. =D which makes me happy and smile, I'm definitely going to buy the whole series online so I have for my memories, and that's a promise ! Van&HitomiForever. -3 Escaflowne. -3 iloveyou.
Hitomi left and didn't kiss Van because they don't have to prove to each other that they love each other. Their love is strong enough for them to stay separated from each other. Also, Escaflowne wasn't a series of happy endings. For them to kiss would defeat the purpose of the whole series itself.
But still, I poured my heart out when i watched this scene T.T I LOVE ESCAFLOWNE FOREVERRRRRRR
No matter what, I will always, always cry at this ending. Just the fact she's leaving it all behind because her basic purpose is done just gets me. Might have been the music, or her simply waving 'goodbye' to everyone and their knowing the change she made and her never returning or the fact she will always remember and vaan with come to check on her maybe time to time. Such a beautiful series and one of my top faves.

@satomipanki I think its because they cant meet physically. They can communicate with one another, like at the end, but they can not meet each other physically. Its a bittersweet ending.
Even if I can't see them get together or kiss on here I can always rely on my imagination! TT_TT Although I would have been insanely satisfied if they showed her going back when she was older.

there's just something about escaflowne that makes you feel like you've transported back in time! this ending is just perfect. it has that bittersweet feel to it. a bit of sadness and a bit of things that stays in your memories and make you smile and get all nostalgic when u think about it!
I'm SUPER SURPRISED that this show had low ratings and was seriously underated like damn, more than half the shows out now are complete crap compared to this

@doanjoey Not "moe" enough. I don't know what Japanese are thinking half the time. There are geniuses that make once-in-a-lifetime works like "Escaflowne" and then the audience completely ignores it. I guess you have to be eccentric to do both and being eccentric is a double-edged sword.
I saw other endings they made and this is the best and IMHO (fan's imagination, huh?) doesn't mean that Hitomi and Van weren't together. In this one we see characters which are just doing that what they want (in alternative version everybody went to the forest to say Hitomi goodbye) and looking at light. They say "bye" not say goodbye forever. We see Van on Earth also. I think he visited Hitomi often and she's been in Gaea for many times. If I think about ending like this I'm not mad at all. <D
who would have thought that sad endings could be exquisitely beautiful at the same time....... saw the series when i was in 6th grade but never got to finish watching it on tv... i just saw the ending part 10 years late on dvd but it was worth it.. , they had 2 other alternate endings but this by, far , this the most heartwrenching...love it!
OMG, this ending makes me cry SO MUCH! I don't think it would have the same effect on me if the music was different, it's a real credit to Yoko Kanno. Like, they're still with each other in their hearts....and they know they think about each other and care. Such a touching ending!
Wouldn't Hitomi just be able to go back to Gaea whenever she wants with her grandmother's pendant? I mean she did it before she can do it again. That's what I think the ending is supposed to mean; that she's lives on Earth, but can and will go back to Gaea whenever she wants. That what it seems to be to me anyways..
I know how their love transcends space and time and everything...but screw that...would've been nice if they stayed together in the same world...a little bit of fan service damn it!

Can someone refresh my memories on why she have to leave again? I think it was explained when they were talking about Hitomi's grandma and Allen's father, who had a similar relationship, but its been a long time since I've seen this.

Haha, me too. I've loved this anime for years, it's the first series I got into really on my own and the ending really choked me up. Not just emotionally but because I too thought they should be together on his planet. Then again, I guess by being apart it's supposed to reflect the differences in their lives, she can't just abandon her life on Earth (family, school and friends), it's supposed to show maturity, etc. *sigh* Same goes for the movie's ending.
i don't understand why she even thought to leave. why wouldn't she want to stay with her first love. Everyone knows you can't ever forget your first love and she gave it up, for what though?
I'm quite glad they didn't come up with a sequel, the movie was already enough of a disappointment.
Stretching the whole series and making it into I-dunno-how-many seasons with its usual enemies would have been comparable to the failure that Digimon became (forgive me the mecha-lacking comparizon xD).

This has to be one of the best anime's I have ever watched, I remember watching it on Fox Kids but they never showed all the eps. The movie wasnt no where as good as the anime.... shame they changed the entire story line.
I love this show but I still HATE the ending. I'm ok with an open ending (at times) but this was the worst mostly because it's not very open - once she says she'll never forget him, even when she is old, it does seem like she won't ever be with him again. Why not have less said so we can imagine what we want.
It still depresses me to this day - but I do love it overall. Will there ever be an OVA? One kiss would have been nice. Sheesh.

The ending is soo sad. Why can't they be together? I wish hitomi stayed with van or maybe van goes with hitomi. Well i'm sure that van can go visit hitomi anytime if he uses escaflowne becuz in one of the episodes van uses escaflowne and flies to earth but van probably won't use escaflowne anymore. He put escaflowne away. I really hope that they make an ova or something showing that hitomi and van meet again. This is such an awesome series and it makes me sad that i has to end. T____T
God, I would have stayed. I know that Gaea would have been a better place. I guess they'll always love eachother,heck...she may see him again someday when she decides to go back(when they make a sequel) (-_-)

The music is amazing though. If you can get the soundtracks, I definitely recommend it. As nexus said, "Lovers Only" is a frigging awesome soundtrack, my favourite out of all of them.
This anime is my all-time favourite. :) I bought the TV series in a box set (I already own the ultimate edition of the movie) and I fell in love with it all over again. The ending is like a kick in the balls because they spend the whole series figuring out they care for each other... and then she wants to stay, but he sends her home. :P Like wtf?
Yes, sappy endings are nice but bittersweet ones are less likely to be forgotten. A very somber, reflective ending for all the characters, especially for Hitomi and Van.
vision of escaflowne is one of my fave anime. i hv a copy of the japanese version & i just fnshd wtchng it again 2 nyts ago. i feel sad everytime i come to the last episode. i wish hitomi stayed. they should have been together. hitomi can live in gaea though it's a different world. afterall, they're for each other. not being with the one you love is sooo sad....wish they can make even just short episodes where van and hitomi are together... please.... =(
you know, she could have gone back if she kept the stone, then she could have gone home, finished school, say goodbye and explain to her parents and stuff and then wish her way back to van on gaea. I love this series so damn much. Sure the series ended, but it'll always live on in my heart. To me, they can still see one another and touch one another despite being worlds apart. The show may be over, but their adventures together continue.
I always ALWAYS sob at this. I hardly ever do that, especially to anime, but this series hits you right in the heart, especially that gorgeous music swelling in the end, just increases the emotion. I have this on original japanese VHS and I can't ever watch this part, I always like to imagine she stays forever.

I'm quite glad they didn't come up with a sequel, the movie was already enough of a disappointment.
Stretching the whole series and making it into I-dunno-how-many seasons with its usual enemies would have been comparable to the failure that Digimon became (forgive me the mecha-lacking comparizon xD).

@maybee214 I remember watching this years ago. I just broke up with my boyfriend while I was watching the series. That night I went home to finish the last episode, and this song came on. At exactly 2:07 I broke down in tears. Ever since then, I have a very similar response. But now, I dont cry for him . . .

I'm sooo a hopeless romantic..why can't they be together when they love each other..
this ending is so painful in a way, I was thinking of how hard it would be for the two of them to be apart when they love each other
anyway, Van will end up with Merle?? since Hitomi will not come back right?

and you dont need anything but the wish to be there to reach gaea

This has to be one of the best anime's I have ever watched, I remember watching it on Fox Kids but they never showed all the eps. The movie wasnt no where as good as the anime.... shame they changed the entire story line.

I love this show but I still HATE the ending. I'm ok with an open ending (at times) but this was the worst mostly because it's not very open - once she says she'll never forget him, even when she is old, it does seem like she won't ever be with him again. Why not have less said so we can imagine what we want.
It still depresses me to this day - but I do love it overall. Will there ever be an OVA? One kiss would have been nice. Sheesh.

its true that its really sad that hitomi left.... and people are saying she shouldve stayed.... but i dont think this ending wouldve been as significant if she stayed and juss had a happy ending... but the fact that theres a lot of dept... to the ending.. and it makes the watcher feel so much... and makes u really think about their lives... and what juss happened.. and how it ended tis way... it really amazing how u could feel for these characters.... so much dept to them... love escaflowne!

The ending is soo sad. Why can't they be together? I wish hitomi stayed with van or maybe van goes with hitomi. Well i'm sure that van can go visit hitomi anytime if he uses escaflowne becuz in one of the episodes van uses escaflowne and flies to earth but van probably won't use escaflowne anymore. He put escaflowne away. I really hope that they make an ova or something showing that hitomi and van meet again. This is such an awesome series and it makes me sad that i has to end. T____T

I guess she kinda had to go back...it's like some weird unwritten rule that lead female characters that visit another world always have to go back home.

The music is amazing though. If you can get the soundtracks, I definitely recommend it. As nexus said, "Lovers Only" is a frigging awesome soundtrack, my favourite out of all of them.

This anime is my all-time favourite. :) I bought the TV series in a box set (I already own the ultimate edition of the movie) and I fell in love with it all over again. The ending is like a kick in the balls because they spend the whole series figuring out they care for each other... and then she wants to stay, but he sends her home. :P Like wtf?

Yes, sappy endings are nice but bittersweet ones are less likely to be forgotten. A very somber, reflective ending for all the characters, especially for Hitomi and Van.

vision of escaflowne is one of my fave anime. i hv a copy of the japanese version & i just fnshd wtchng it again 2 nyts ago. i feel sad everytime i come to the last episode. i wish hitomi stayed. they should have been together. hitomi can live in gaea though it's a different world. afterall, they're for each other. not being with the one you love is sooo sad....wish they can make even just short episodes where van and hitomi are together... please.... =(

you know, she could have gone back if she kept the stone, then she could have gone home, finished school, say goodbye and explain to her parents and stuff and then wish her way back to van on gaea. OR van could have used escaflowne to go see her and take her back but NO they had to make BOTH impossible right? o well, van could always use the stone to see her somtime i guess i just wish they would wind up together! *ToT*

Probably she don't see him again in other ways that just visions.
Its also a Maaya tribute to the first seiyu and singer experience. May be the original sentence was changed for her.

I love this series so damn much. Sure the series ended, but it'll always live on in my heart. To me, they can still see one another and touch one another despite being worlds apart. The show may be over, but their adventures together continue.

I always ALWAYS sob at this. I hardly ever do that, especially to anime, but this series hits you right in the heart, especially that gorgeous music swelling in the end, just increases the emotion. I have this on original japanese VHS and I can't ever watch this part, I always like to imagine she stays forever.
Hate endings like this, but love this series.
