  • i don't even know what i should write about this essay concerning this story? I guess the 6 pages will be too small cus I've got a lot to write and to link it with culture, family, socialization, religion, crime and health policies...a good one there!!

  • after watching this movie ... i feel how silly is my life !

  • Thanks for the opportunity you gave us to watch this movie.

  • Wish I could cry....I wish people like Walter (sr.) existed in real life as well :'( And to think, this was for my E.lit homework. Beautiful.

  • @13alirae men like walter do exist...they are personality type INTJ :)

  • I love this movie and in my mind, the look of little Walter, light brown hair, i like to think the he is Walters son and not Charlies. Makes my think that even when she really feel in love with Walter then lost him, she still has a part of him with her, to which makes me cry even more lol

  • @ladyelly8 I believe it's implied at the end that Walter Jr. is indeed Walter and Kitty's son. The kid is blonde with blue eyes, just like his father. Remember, Walter had blonde hair and blue eyes.

The Painted Veil is one my favorite movies since it's about redemption, love, and lost.

  • its so sad that he died! and it must be so horrific to see the man you love go through that and look like that! she really did love him in the end and i guess thats what counts but its still so sad! :'(

  • i wish edward norton's real son will look like him

  • Loved this movie cried at the part were he died..

  • Loved the movie! Thank you for taking great care when you uploaded. Wonderful quality.

  • The more I see of this I think the end with little Walter is one of my favorite parts! Love the way he reacts to Charlie with what seems an innate sense of distrust. Like when he says how old he is, in my mind it almost seems like he's on the verge of calling Charlie something rude cause he's got this adorable smirky look on his face. . . But he's a proper little man like his Father. So he doesn't.

  • gah... y did he have to die??? :'(

  • so who was the dad???

  • MrNoandyes- I agree with you. Me too, I like English movies and English actors (I am not English) and I have enough of Hollywood productions...This is a wonderful movie!

  • @13ma98 Although I am British and what you write does give me a certain sense of national pride, I think this film is not British but American! It just used some British actors!

  • English movies are very real. Some thing that you can touch, you can feel. Honestly, This bloody city that called Hollywood with its crab actors and greedy producers have destroyed the taste of the people. There must be a city in England like Hollywood that bring the real film makers to the lights again :(

  • another movie that might be this type of film. The Razor's Edge (the version will Bill Murray) also, Seven Years in Tibet, and of course Dr. Zivago.....

  • the only thing that makes me feel better is the fact that edward norton is still actually an dit was just a movie... it was just a movie... sniff

  • Excellant movie. So worth the watch. <3

  • @chibijaxie so was that Charlie's son at the end of the script? or the doctor's? are we suppose to know?

  • @thepixieful To me it looked like the Dr.'s

  • Personally I think the boy was Charlie's and I think they both realized it. I think she chose to raise him as Walter's though in honor of the love she found for him and how being with him changed her into the person she became. I think Charlie sees this and leaves because he respects this wish. I think Charlie may not of loved Kitty, but had a certain fondness of her. Walter though was my favorite character, quiet, shy, dangerous, but also sad. I was sad he died but I think this was the best end

  • @rabidbookworm93 that is how I read it too. thought casting picked the young actor to resemble Charile, but she wants to tell the kid of the nobel father.

  • op! the kid looks like walter's

  • I love how she honors her husband in the end there against charlie; very moving

  • They finally really fall in love with each other not just who they thought the other should be. That sucks

  • wow i cried to the extent i prayed......so touching

  • thank you so much for uploading this movie!! it was great!! but now im gonna have puffy eyes tomorrow morning. UGH :( so sad. WHY???

  • why am i mourning over a fictional character? :'(

  • 3 people just couldn't handle the emotion in the movie.

I would not wan't to see a loved one buried in such a matter.

  • 3 people just couldn't handle the emotion in the movie.

  • T_T

  • the boy is soo pretty!his nose is ever so beautiful

  • a really good movie, beautifully made. Not very faithful to maugham's novel, though

  • @queentriggerfish in what way?

  • If you guys really want to know who the real father of Walter Jr. is then read the book. Hint: It's not the guy he's named after. :'(

  • i hate charlie.

  • Jr. has Walter's nose.

  • The music is so beautiful and poignant for the plot and setting of the film, Such exquisite direction and production, so immaculately out together

  • i love this movie so sad but so great xx

  • Thank you so much for posting this , your a rock star xox .

The end is so sad .

Charlie Sucks . WALTER ROCKS XOX .

  • 'No one important, darling!'

    Only maybe your father!!

    But lets hope not.....

  • Why??? This is not fucking fair! :( :(

  • ouch, this part hurt. LIKE FUCK IT HURT.

  • i'm about to watch this part.... and i'm scared.

  • This destroyed me.

  • Excellent film..

Thanks SO MUCH for sharing hun!!!..

  • I would have cried, it was a beautiful storyline but I think I am all cried out. Before this I watched Prayers For Bobby I think it is just as beautiful and sad :(

  • the part were she crys when she looking at walters papers breaks my heart so bad :'((((((((

  • Does somone PRETTY PLEASE want to tell me the song that starts at 3:23 ? pleaassssseeeee I LOVE IT!

  • @ezzh16 It's "A La Claire Fontaine" by Shang Wen Jie. I love it too!!! :)

  • Thank you SO much for uploading this movie. What a challenging and sublime journey of truth, love and forgiveness. Truly great film and great acting.

  • I love This film. I will probably watch this movie again in like 2 years from now. Cinematography, acting, directing and script was magnificent.

  • NOOOOO!!!!! y did he have to die!!!!!! :'(

  • Great movie!!!!! i can 't stop crying!!!! i love Edward Norton!!he is a great actor!!!

  • fuck i got a essay due wed. about this book/movie!

  • Who is the father of the kid?

  • @Popcorn8997

Probably Walter from the looks of it. But the point was that it didn't matter who the father was.

  • @Popcorn8997

I'd say he's Walter's, because he looks like him more than Townsend, and Kitty and her son in the flower shop is kind of an echo of the scene where she and Walter were in the flower shop at the beginning.

  • reminede me of Beyond Borders a bit. thank you.

  • crape...i can'tstop crying...i look like a panda right now...

  • beautiful music

  • I also hated the fact that he died...but it also gives a hole new sense to the movie, she discovers who and what is important in life, real things, real situations, TRUE love...instead of superficial things such as money and sex...it shows he was a real man, not like charlie, it shows that Walter showed her what life is about, what matters...and how simple life can be, you choose what is honest and important, you forget what isnt.

  • why in hell he died cant it be a happy end

  • Who cried? I can't stop..

    -3 Edward Norton

  • favourite movie ever, so sad, can't stop crying. :'(

  • Kitty looks remarkably like nicole kidman! Both very beautiful and talented women =)

  • I hate how I just cry and cry whenever I see a heartwrenching scene in a movie. hate it hate it hate it.

  • I wish Walter had lived! *tears*

  • It's funny how Charlie in this movie is Naomi Watts's actual husband... :P

  • I think this is the best film which can show the shock of feelings ,the setting of the film is amazing !! a romantic drame ! the end is very touching !! good actors !

really can't stop loving this film !!!!

  • this was depressing.... beautiful movie, stil why must the good die young!

  • what's the song playing around 5:10? it's so sad and sweet.

  • Great movie! I just came across this by accident, never planned on watching it.

  • they show her grief so simply and effectively

  • Wow what a great movie! I think Naomi Watts & Leiv Shreiber have a beautiful family but MY GOODNESS! The chemistry with Edward Norton & her throughout this movie was AMAZING!!! Again thanks for posting!

  • when the neighbor comes and picks her up from the floor, i cry just watching naomi's face. i feel her grief.

  • pacat

  • pacat

  • anyone else wonder what was on the papers she was reading in the end?

  • @HeartofOphelia I was wondering the same thing... anyone???

  • @HeartofOphelia it probably is something walter wrote to kitty while he was working. I think working is his distraction from Kitty but he simply loves her too much to stop thinking of her. I love this movie!!!

  • un final atipico pero me gusto

  • I hate this movie !! i cant stop crying :'(

  • @LilMissJwanza me neither :( almost used up a whole pack of tissues. such an amazing movie though!!

  • @LilMissJwanza

I hate your comment. Spoils the movie. Just kidding, my fault for reading it before watching the rest. Lol

  • Third time watching this..doesn't get old at all. Edward is a FINE man...perfect! Im thinking of reading the book but judging from the comments...theres no happy ending :( MY FAVOURITE MOVIE! Edward <3

  • shouldn't Walter really be the father? I mean, it doesn't make less than 2 months to build a water wheel that size from nothing. Which means Kitty's pregnancy sickness showed up only after Walter and Kitty have been doing it. Though actually, it really doesn't matter who's the biological father (Though I think for a Man of Biology it must have been hard for Walter to swallow.)

  • Does anybody know, why "Painted Veil"?

  • @MsInvisibleDeath Painted Veil refers to the expectations people have on other people, the idealised image they have of the other.

  • @autumnsoliloquy thank u. :)

  • @MsInvisibleDeath maybe because Kitty married Walter even if she didn't love him. Just a wild guess :-)

  • @MsInvisibleDeath

Because both Kitty and Walter did not see the true other at first, it was like there was a painted veil covering each of them, perhaps a veil they were projecting their idea of each other onto. So in the end, I guess the veil is torn, they are both "unveiled" to the other, their true characters are revealed, without all the fluff and insincerity we put up for society and strangers. :) And that's why they really fall in love with each other.

  • @stonehengesunset very nicely said. I think,entirely correct - U opened my eyes . thank you. :)

  • i knew one of them had to die..it would not be kitty because it seemed like every turn she was making a morbid joke about dying of cholera......it was only a matter of time..excellent movie though

  • Great movie!

  • now i will be sad for weeks, grrr

  • I love the irony that Charlie really is her husband. They do a fantastic job playing their parts in a realistic love story where someone else plays her husband.

  • wow, at the beginning of the movie she was just a spoilt girl who didn't want to get married and look at the life she's had!

  • Why oh why does the good ones get taken first?

  • Arghhh this is such a good movie! Drama, romance, history, a touch of comedy, and a bittersweet ending... I just wish Walter hadn't gotten sick, but it was good to see Kitty become a strong woman and what looks like a wonderful mother. Thank you for posting this! <3

  • walter dies of the cholera? ha, didn't see that one coming..but it had to..somerset had a point..of course i'm hoping the ending to his book is the same as the movies..or that would mean that again, a director taking up the '''auteur''?? but doesn't fail this time:) are we certain the child was charlies?

  • @LetTheRightOneIn19 No, I don't think we're certain because it was implied that they had intimate moments in Shanghai before Kitty met Charlie and they had a honeymoon in Venice. It wouldn't have made much sense if they didn't do anything on their honeymoon.

  • Thankyou so much for uploading this movie! I can't believe i had never heard of it and the film hasn't had a great success, i honestly feel this is one of the most empowering stories i have ever viewed. such a good film, thankyou again!

  • omg the french song...is sooo amazing...it fits the scene sooo captivating...

  • Thanks so much for uploading this great flick. I hadn't even known of it's existence before I chanced to see it on your channel.

  • I had to wait until the very end to be sure : she truly loved him, there's no doubt about it. Who cares who really is this child's father. 'Who was that mummy ?' 'No one important...' She chose it to be Walter.

Anyway thanks for posting this great movie : an epic love story yet so unusual and without any clichés... A real gift for the heart and soul.

  • It is truly a wonderful movie that preaches the love of Christ without His name being mentioned. Wow!

  • how come i always cry wen i watch this movie

  • oh god i can keep on watching this movie for ever..... and each time cry like it's the first time for me to see it.....

  • Walters accent is impeccable.

  • Excellent movie and excellent music written by Alexandre Desplat...best film I;ve seen in along time!

  • i was wondering what kitty must be thinking when she was mating with the other guy.

  • really really thank you for uploading this movie.

would you please upload the other edward norton's great movie ''the illusionist''?

    please please upload it

  • this is beautiful

  • I cried so much......

  • Excellent!! Absolutely pleasantly surprised.

  • thanks for putting this up. I cry with the end each time I have seen this movie. Norton knows his stuff!

  • they should give edward norton an oscar now...he's like standing there quietly but you can hear his talent screaming...

  • Bravo! Thank you souravbhuru for uploading this.

  • Great man! Thanks for uploading!

  • that was boring and also the child looked like charles

  • @lavendertwilight08 u look like charles

  • this is the most sad part on a movie I ever see :(

  • Odd tune for the ending credits.

  • @juanmora19910209 thats what i thought at first, but if you look it up, the lyrics echo kitty and walter's relationship. after watching this movie several times, (im studying it), ive decided there couldnt be a better tune for it!

  • 4:29 to 4:58 make me wept evry time i watch it .. hw abt u ?

  • anybody know the song? so sad!

  • Such a good film

  • I am really surprised that this film was not praised more. I was not eager to watch this film originally as the reviews had been ranging from fair to poor, but this is truly fantastic.

The acting, the filming, the script, and the ending; they were all so brilliant. I do love Edward Norton because he is, quite frankly, a sexy muffin; but this is an excellent film purely because it is.

  • Perhaps it is wrong to like the movie more than the book, but I can't help but feel that everything I found dissatisfying in the book was changed to my tastes in the film. I loved it! Stunning setting.

  • Thanks for sharing this awesome movie. All actors were amazing. This movie was beautifully done.

  • Thanks for sharing this awesome movie. All actors all passion. Beautifully done.

  • The little boy looks just like Walter, same features and the same smile! He doesn't smile when he looks at Charlie, though.

  • I know you can never expect a movie to be just like the book but this was so different. They never actually found that peace with each other and she never loved him. Actually, I believe she found a bit of relief when he was gone. That said, I didn't really care for the book. It was depressing to me. I think this movie is better than the book.

  • forgive me......

omg i totaly love this film!!!!and also edward norton, great actor!!!!

  • Thank you so much for posting all of the clips! I never get tired of watching this movie.

  • Wait, some of the scenes weren't posted

    Whose child was it?

  • @Stephxlolable youre not supposed to know. its an open ended movie.

  • ugh!!!! bogus ending!

  • The first time i saw this movie i knew it was going to be one of my favorites, everytime i watch it i find something new about it i love. I love the ending, and the french music that l=plays as Kitty is coping with her husbands death. everything about htis movie is truly beautiful, truly romantic. i wish more people saw it as a modern classic.

  • That kid is so cute! It seemed like Townsend didn't even realize that the boy might have been his.

  • Great movie! Thx for posting!

  • this movie is AWESOME! It totally shows the fragility of life and how love can forgive and forget. Walter really was a noble man. i loved it.

  • @leviticus111 ultimately its townsend and kitty who has all the fun at walter's expense.

  • I can't breath through my nose because I'm crying so much. I haven't cried like this for a long time. I just love this movie even thought it's so sad, it's beautiful. I love how a great movie can have so many emotions in it. I'm speechless except for my sobs!

  • in the end the kid asks who is he. and kitty replies no one of importance. thats mean of her of not letting the father know that there is a possibility he could have fathered that child. Also it was not fair for the child not knowing who his biological father is now that his legal father is dead. anyways i will be reading the book for sure. this is a story painted by the director now lets see how the writer has filled in the colours. thanks for uploading.

  • @axxymax Read the book if you haven't already. She didn't know who the father was.

  • beautiful,just beautiful!!:)

  • i had a hearty laugh after watching this movie. amazing what a guy i think he is a reincarnation of gandhi himself.

  • How can someone not weep?

  • terrific! couldn't believe i watched through all 13 episodes in one sitting. and i'm not a love story kind of person.

  • I'm lost for words ... beautiful. Simply beautiful. Beautiful music and cinemotography and there was great acting between Watts and Norton. I'm very impressed! Thank you very much for uploading this in such great quality. It has been a joy to watch.

  • Superb film - Naomi and Edward have great presence on screen. Toby is prefect. The film captures that period in Chinese history. It is now my favourite film of all time. Sincere thanks for uploading.

  • Great love story. To my mind It's not important to know who is the biological father of Walter jr. Perhaps Kitty herself won't ever know it but actually it doesn't matter because the most important is her choice. As she is not sure to know who is the father of her child she can choose. The last scene is clear : her son is called Walter. Kitty gave him the first name of the man who is the real father of her son. The other man is "no-one important" for her and for Walter jr. She has choosen.

  • @TheFLTower Couldn't have said it better myself! To me the father does not matter, what's most important is that she chose Walter, not Charlie. He really is the true father in every sense of the word, whether he is biologically or not.

  • @AtomicAlexis I totally agree with you, and the kid looks more like Walter anyway :D

  • La claire fontaine is one of the most touchin songs I've ever heard.. I used to sing it back when I wa a child never really got the meanin though.. Omgzzz.. Im crying like a baby right now!!

  • @kingkongfoot Same for me ! At first, I was surprised by the choice of this song and thought it was kind of strange but then I realized that, actually, it could not have been more accurate for the ending of this movie... Guess I hadn't really understood the lyrics either as a child ^^

  • One word to define this movie = AMAZING

  • Every time I watch this movie I always hold out hope that Walter lives this time. It makes me sad.

  • @wickedyes07 : Apologies, but could you please remove this comment - you do realise that it's spoiling the ending of the movie for everybody that hasn't seen it before !? Thanks.

  • @gmck23sam no. This is the ending. Please don't read the comments before you finish the movie next time.

  • @wickedyes07 " Excuse me - this segment is almost 10 mins long - Walter dies more than 2 mins into it. As your comment received 26 'thumbs up' comments, it is the first displayed comment when anybody opens Part .13 - Understand ? As soon as anybody clicks on Part. 13 you are announcing that Walter dies. Remove your comment, and I'll then do likewise so as not to spoil the movie for all others, and maybe learn to take a different tone with people also. Thank you. G.

  • he has the mask of death on his face...
