  • how much did all the supplies cost?

  • @soimnick all told, about 1700 for everything (cement work, raw materials, windows, etc)

  • You guys did a great job. I think it's called plinth at the top of the eave, great detail. Been a framer for years and can say, you could probably park a car on that thing and it would be ok. Have fun.

  • i could be wrong, but at 2:13 i thought i saw doubled up studs on that back wall, was i mistaken? if they were, why were they doubled up?

  • @feralbigdog You are correct -in fact, the entire back wall is double studed. Between each set of studs are plywood gussets that form a lumber rack. The wall supports nearly 2 tons of domestic hardwoods I use in my furniture building. Overkill? - perhaps. Easy and effective - definitely.

  • @chetkloss id rather overbuild than underbuild, it just had me confused for a second, i thought maybe there was a local code or something. building furniture eh? i tend to do some woodwork myself

  • LOVE THE VAN MORRISON MUSIC!!!!!! COULDN'T HAVE PLAYED BETTER MYSELF!!!!!!!!! WUUUUUUUUUUUUU WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE WILD NIGHT, IS CALLING!!!!!!!!!

  • Actually the wall had already been plumbed. Putting the square up to the stud shows how much the floor is sloped (which is very little).

  • square the wall of a sloped slab lol?

  • THIS IS AWESOME ! Thanks, I plan on building my shed next month.

  • Great job, Cheers.

  • Nice video and nice to watch someone else do this to see how they do it.

  • awesome..family team work

  • Pretty looking shed. Like it a lot. Great job..

    regards

    JW

  • i like the door texture xD

  • hey'' i worked as site supervisor for better barns for about 10 yrs,, i know this barn very well ,, and let me say that you not only nailed it as far as quality ,, but also with the have fun and make it a good time attitude ,, nice job from the expert !!!

  • @david90677 Thank you Davaid. Let me say, that without Better Barns, this would not have come out nearly so well. With over 4 years of snow, rain, winds and generally bad weather here in Michigan, it has not leaked one bit. I can't even say that about my house...

  • We built a shed HAND NAILED !!!

  • Wow cool. I was doing some research to build a shed and I found this site.

    mysker.shedplans.hop.clickbank

Pretty amazing. You have absolutely everything.

  • Ohh add

    .net

    at the end. Sorry. ^^

  • great song...

  • nice work; nice family!

  • Thanks for the great music and inspiration. I'm in the early stages of building my cabin/shed/home.

  • 1700 with the cement base?

  • nicley done guys

  • nice work, man.. what's the name of that awesome song.?

  • @Mexik777 Thanks. There are two songs on the video - both are done by Van Morrison. The first is Wild Nights and the second is Domino.

  • Very nice work! I'd like to get something like that also but I'm not sure if i need a permit?? I live in a row home so yeah.....

  • WOW!! the one week is fine but 1000 is a little high. were gettin a donkey and like a goat to keep it company and stuff like that and were tryin to get some ideas on how the barn type shed should look. but its prob just gonna be a bit smaller . and thxs for the info:)

  • did this take a long time to build and did it coast much please tell me.

  • @CutePoniesLOL We built it over the ciurse of one week and spent about $1700 for it.

  • its 14x18?

  • great video

  • Awesome termination! Very nice done!

How much did it cost? (including everything except the tools)

    Thanks for posting ur vid!

  • @hydrogenix Thanks very much. I paid 700 for the concrete slab and about 1000 for everything else (I bought pre-fab windows)

  • So great to see a family working so well together.

They say a family that works and plays together stays together.

  • Excellent Craftsmanship!

  • not including tools, i'd say the wood cost about $200? yes?

  • @TheWinningGambler A bit more I'm afraid. If we are only talking wood (no fasteners, no concrete, no windows) then we're in the $400 range.

  • Dang. That's bigger than my house :) Seriously nice job.

  • Awesome! What a sweet little workshop/shep/barn/hideout..... :)

  • OOOOH Domino todotodotoooo you dudes rock!

  • pretty slick little building,I am planning one too..slightly bigger..16x24 or there abouts

  • Hello nice carriage house. What is the size of your rafter 2 x 4 and the run 2 x 6 or

    rafter 2 x 6 and run 2 x 8. thanks

  • @4everinadayandahalf Thanks.

The rafter/truss are 2x4 on the slope and 2x6 on the run. Structurally they could have been 2x4 all around but I wanted to use the ceiling from more storage so I went with 2x6.

  • @chetkloss That's a damn good job... I myself am not a fan of slabs... I've just seen way too many slabs crack... I also prefer balloon framing over platform framing... Of course though... I'm in the business of 19th Century restoration and not new construction... Regardless... You all did a damn good job and it's good to teach your children about a building trade... I believe everyone should have a building trade to fall back on in case of unemployment in their regular job...

  • nice shed , can i use it for my holidays .... hohonly joking , but great vijo

  • This video shows you how you can build a shed on your own. Nice job and it is a good lesson for your family. I have several plans at shedbuildingpros

  • very nice, thanks for sharing

  • who cares if they are boys or girls!. i see a very united family, congratulations!!

  • Nice work, I am building my own shed and looking for inspiration. Your video is definitely one.

  • I think the experience the girls gained from this is worth far more than the shed itself. Good job on the shed and for making it a family thing......

  • @miconn69 Thanks. I really think the girls did learn something but best of all it was a great family project.

  • @miconn69, I'm building my own 8x6 building/shed by myself for the first time, and I'm a girl :) IT's fun and rewarding!

  • @Shareallicu - and I'm sure you'll do a great job! It helps to have skills in this day and age of disposable buy on demand society. With the future going God knows where, those that have knowledge and skills to do for themselves will succeed. Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress....... :-)

  • @miconn69, thanks!! I'm framing the roof now :)

  • Love it!

Can you bring your team over to mine?

  • Heck... this is nothing. I've seen what Chet can really do... you should see his Basement (and Forehead!) :-) - Bill

  • how much did all supplys cost, not including the slab and what are the demensions

  • Without the slab - about $1300

  • @chetkloss it looks really nice from juan in los angeles 4/11/10

  • @chetkloss whats the glue the girl is using at 0:37?

  • Nice work!

  • That is a nice video and very educational. I am planning on building one myself and this will help me.

  • Nice job I need one for my motorcycle

  • Thats a nice build. Great attention to detail

  • WOW Thats great good team work! (:

  • Everybody seems thrusty in that vid. Where the F*$% is the case of beer ???

  • how much did it cost you

  • about 2 grand

  • how much they hit u up for the slab?

  • @adenhatesx slab was 700

  • GREAT SHED-VIDEO AND MUSIC-glad to see the women up on the roof jacks

  • I should have had you guys build my house! Watch My Money Pit, parts 1-3.

  • Hi, Great shed video....... This is by far the best shed build video on youtube. I've watched this video atleast 20 times over the past 4 months. I'm building a huge shed called :The Twins" and will have a youtube video of my own by spring 2010. I have been working on it since mid October 2009 and just got the walls up on the 2nd shed today and am taking alot of pics. Again, great video and I hope to top this in April, You set the bar, Mike

  • Hi Mike,

Thanks for the kind words. Please be sure to post of "The Twins" - sounds like a great project.

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,Chet

  • Well done! (danoldsbb = Troll)

  • Thanks - and your equation resolves as true :)

  • you should lose some weight man

  • @danoldsbb You should get some brains douche bag

  • um dont act like a bitch seriously hes not even fat just leave him alone faggot i bet ur anorexic

  • nice and warm family built a shed together.

  • Hi How much did $ did you have in materials? Nice shed by the way !

  • All up I think I spent a little over 1500 (including the concrete work)

  • Nice looking job and very nice looking helpers you had. well the female ones.

  • Thanks and I agree. Some of us are not quite as gifted in the looks area :) - but I do have great hair...

  • cool video! Cool shed! You spent a lot of time and money on this little shed. What was with the little home made ladder that was laid across the ridge?

  • what size is this? 4x8 ? 8x12? thanks

  • Hi Lucky,

    Its 9 x 12

    ,,,,Chet

  • did you guys ever end up adding anything extra like insulation, shelves, or electricity?

  • No electricity or insulation but lots of racks and free standing shelves. The Carriage House is very dry and has great ventilation and is unheated so there is no mold or mildew. We store lots of stuff in it and it all stays great.

  • great job, nice looking shed, somebody knew alot about building in order to make their own truss's ,and the cuts looked perfect,, Quality

  • wow!! it looks great:) i have one little question

do u you need permits to build a shed??

  • I can only comment about my city, Livonia, Michigan. Here I needed to get a permit and an inspection for the slab and rat wall. The concrete goes 2 feet down around the perimieter of the slab. The building itself did not need a permit.

  • this is a great video of the job, makes me wanna go start hitting nails.

  • niiiice!! looks like alot of hard work went into that very very nice job...how much did the materials cost 2 make this?

  • All in all about 2 grand.

  • good job....really cute girls

  • Very nice job!! Made me tired just watchin ya! Ha!

    Great pics, too.

Music was NOT horrible, but right in step!

  • How much did this project cost roughly what type of timber did you use

  • 2 grand he said in a later comment

  • nice job

  • nice building, good music and really cute helpers. what more could guy want?

  • what diagram did yall use to build this house. looks nice. where can i get it.

  • i love this song! haha looks great:)

  • Nice job and I enjoyed the music!

  • Thanks - but I can't disagree more about the music.

  • To each his own haha,

But really I build these for a living this looks great, good job!

  • Great music!!About how much did it cost to build

  • Nice project and nice music.

  • very good. I like the little trim details and the old fashioned window stool with the drip notch cut in it.

It looks like a good family project. That is time well spent. Thanks for the post.

  • nice shed, looks like roof pitch is 10/12 and your house roof looks like 5/12 with it being that close to your house why didnt you make the shed pitch and house pitch match, i know you wanted the storage uptop, but it looks odd with different roof pitches like that close together next time think about that, nice shed thou

  • Thank you for the comments. Since you mentioned it- The high roof pitch was primarily designed for the storage but the aesthetic of the shed was never meant to match the house. Rather, the shed, and the pergola, and the deck are all complimentary forms in an overall landscape design. I would draw your attention to rollng landscape designs like Central Park in New York or Greenfield Village in Dearborn where an eclectic collection of forms results in a pleasing design. It was very intentional

  • As a side note, my home is never seen in this video so the 5/12 pitch you mention is one of the neighbors. My home's roof is a bit steeper.

  • o yea nice shed to

  • why r there no cripple studs under the windows. is there a different way that u dont need them

  • There are cripples on either side of the windows. This provides more than enough support for these small windows even though the studs are on 24" centers (and not 16)

  • I am building a 13' by 10' shed to use as a workshop. What size is yours?

  • Very similar. Mine is 10 x 12

  • looks like yous all have fun, and you got the ladies involved. very nice small barn :)

  • whats this song called?

  • The first song is Wild Nights and the second is Domino. Both are by Van Morrison.

  • WOW! you are no quiter!

  • nice shed, that one probably cost around $15,000 - $20 000 to make with all the materials and labour, ive made a fab tree house and i made an elevator myself to go up and down, recently a guy saw it and offered to buy it for $90 000 but it took me 2 days to build it on my own so i said no way

  • Love the Playboy shorts.....

  • great job. you went from a shed to a second house, LOL! that is a beaut! great job! if my wife saw that she would tell me to build one so i could live in it. and i wouldnt mind as long as i have my welder.

  • Van!! YAY

    nice shed video too

  • Just wondering how much would o project like this cost me? Great job by the way.

  • Thanks James.

Roughly speaking, I'd say we spent $1500 or so.

    ,,,,,,,,,,,Chet

  • Good song :)

  • great vid. nice looking shed.

  • What's a girl doing with a nail gun sir?

That's the last thing the world needs, another girl with sense. Next, she'll wanna build something. Then you'll have problems. You been warned.

  • yea im 16 and my friend and I are planning on building a 12x12 soon. I have a nice concrete slab in my backyard as well that would easily fit a 20x20 but being that my mom is kinda weird about the whole idea anyways I dare not get carried away. Ive had a friend of my fathers draw out some blueprints. My dad is a Framer but hes away on a job in texas for about 2 months and I want it to be a surprise for him when he gets back. If anyone can give me some tips on how to build it, I would be greatful

  • Very nice job!!! Nice compilation of your steps. I'm building a 16x20 shortly, and hope I'm not biting off more than I can hammer. I'm alone too....

Hope it turns out as nice as yours.

  • Thanks.

The parts that I found I really needed an extra set of hands was raising the walls and lifting the trusses into place.

    Best of luck,

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,Chet

  • Say what you want about people who have a trade, but I know plenty that make a lot more than most people with college educations. Gone are the days of college=great job and security. Nice post.

  • hey i really like this i think u and ur friends should make me 1 OR 2 lol jkjk i love it i want 1

it looks like a cool litttttttttle house lol and how much did this cost?

  • Well done. A bit overbuilt with the double 2 x 4's inside but, very nice. Detailed the window frames out too! You go boy! Uh, chicks too.

  • Jnkdog,

The double 2x4's on the back wall of the shop are there because they hold almost 2 tons of hardwood lumber. I'm not sure the video shows it very well but I use the back 2 feet of the shop for lumber storage. Double 2x4's were an easy way to create a really strong lumber rack for very little investment.

Overkill? - maybe - Cheap and effective - definitely :)

    Thanks,

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,Chet

  • It is truly a super shed!

  • Great shed, better than mine. It looks like a small caridge house! Good job.

  • love the way you put your video together, makes ya feel like youre there.

as a fellow shed builder, i wish i coulda had lots of people in my pics, but i built it alone, check it out if youd like

  • How much did this cost in materials?

  • woot, now thats some real contracting

  • not my cup of tea,

    but nice job mate.

  • How long did it ake to build?

  • We built over the course of one week. Most days there was two of us and some days there were 4 or 5 of us.

  • you do very nice work, Chet

  • not yet....im sending him the link to watch it...

  • nice uncle chet....i think this turned out very nice...i am pleased..i hope you are! thank you for the experience and opportunity...i had a great time...thank you agian!

  • Matt,

I'm so glad you found the video (I didn't have your email address). Anyway, I couldn't have built it without you. Say, did you show this to your shop teacher?

  • i was a part of that! i am in the red!!! yay!!!!

  • Chet forgot to mention that is was a Better Barns Plan. Of course I am partial to Better Barns. ;>

  • yes it was a "Better Barns" plan! I also bought the door hardware and the windows from them. All of it was great stuff.
