Those fuckers laugh because the song is funny ... black, grim, violent and very, very funny.
It is about a scullery maid fantasizing about violently killing everyone she has to do menial work for ...if that's not funny, you just don't get Brecht'd dark humour.
Wowowoww!! You are awesome!! :D I love Hebrew, its a beautiful language. I can't speak it or anything. ^^; But yes. My theatre college is putting on Threepenny Opera and I'm playing Polly so I get to sing part of this song solo. :o I'm nervous, lol!
I have to disagree. Brecht, with his whole idea of theater as a format that should awaken your mind and not your heart, always tried to make his productions as "artificial" as possible so that the audience wouldn't relate to them emotionaly. Many of his tricks were extremely theaterical - stuff like have the lighting devices show or having written signs to announce where the play is taking place, whatever made it theaterical and un-realistic.
So considering that, I think he would like this :)
She's great and very pretty. I like this song alot but I've only heard it in English and German. I bet it would sound pretty good in Yiddish. Is this girl a university student?
Thank you! Jenny is not supposed to be pretty so I tried to make myself as ugly as can be. You can't see in this video cause it's too far away, but I had dead-white make up, red under my eyes and a black tooth, so it looked kinda haunted and crazy.
And I've never heard a Yiddish version of it, but singing it in Hebrew was fun :)
I did that for a competition in my college in Israel, I left that school in the middle of freshman year and right now I'm studying Musical Theatre in NYC, I might do this song again here, but obviously in English :)
I think I pretty much covered all your questions... And thank you again for the encouraging comment!
wow.

Really great! I love finding different renditions of this song and seeing how each singer interprets it.
Where did you find the Hebrew translation? I've found French and Italian translations online, but never a Hebrew one.
