I was there. 18 years old and ready to start college at U.C. San Diego. What a show. I think there was some group called Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys that played before Jimi but I could be wronged. Unfortunately my idol died shortly after this concert but I can tell my kids as well as my college students that I saw Jimi Hendrix live in concert.

@bluescanfly1981 If you havent done so already, watch (Hey Joe) jimi live on lulu. Its around YouTube somewere. You will here the I feel fine riff much clearer. Enjoy!!!
Oh right the youth generation is always at fault for everything. That's why this country has been flatlining for a decade and the only answers you old folks come up with is more taxes.
. Just look at the comments that todays youth posts. The majority is filled with poor grammar and misspelled English. With such uneducated ignorant youth it's no wonder they have no clue what real musical talent is nor are able to distinguish it even if they hear it.
Long live Jimis legacy for all of us who recognize just how amazing he really was.
You are such a dumbass I hope you realize you sound as fuckin retarded as the generation that use to downgrade you as youths before us...there is a word count and its not like we are in school...really not that big of a deal guy you can take the stick out of your....perfection
Jimi was an innovator and a visionary. His guitar playing, like Janis Joplins singing, came from his soul. The C rap that the majority of today's youth call music is a joke. How many rappers play anything? The Guitar, Drums, Keyboards? Hell they cant even sing! It's all about shouting nigger this and nigger that. They are not musicians; they are talentless idiots capitalizing on the ignorant American youth that think it's cool to be some kind of gangster or thug.
He had a huge wall of Marshall amps behind him. (They could have been set to 11! Well maybe not.)
When he played with teeth it wasn't like you or I might make a plucky sound or something it was more like he was wailing and doing those things only Hendrix could do and it continued like you wouldn't believe even with his teeth. Unreal!
I was surprised more people didn't show up. We did have him all to ourselves for a little while there.
actually wait.. no they're not... maybe he was just playing it the righty way then.. idk, its peculiar... why dont we ask the person who posted this vid...???
ok ok its jimi hendrix the pic is reversed they filmed on reels and the negative coulda been exposed the wrong way its jimi hendri at fillmore band of gypsies check it out
I like the bit where Jimi sneaks in the 'I feel fine' riff as mini tribute to the Beatles! He got away with that comment about San Diego being 'Cowboy land' as well.
There's no excitement in music anymore its all manufactured shite! I could shoot pete waterman and simon cowell i hate the bastards they've ruined music.
Yeah no shit man. People like Simon Cowell are the anti-Christ of music. They wrapted it all up in plastic celophane and shove it down the "unknowings" throats. Music was a business back than but the people who played it played to make a statement, tell a story, get out thier emotions, not a quick fortune. I am ashamed of my generations music and apologize to all of it's weekness in soul.
woa that first picture is a weird picture. It's either an incredibly early and rare picture of him, or not him. It looks like him with a super small afro but it looks like he's palying right-handed. Could the image maybe have been mirrored?
The unmistakable sound of "The J.H.E." Noel, Mitch & Jimi, digging in,=pure class."thanks verymuch"
(That particlar setting on the univibe is also evident during certain tracks at Woodstock and at latter performances aswell as studio engagements, e.g Rainbow Bridge(the album) amongst others)
I think its better it was primitive. Because you had to try harder to make it sound. Now a days talent has sufferd because of guitar gero, casio keyboards, and effect pedals etc...
not even.... back then they had the best quality equipment..... and it was better that it stayed like that.... the rawness of those times fostered more soulful types of music....
the difference between him and other artists today is that he actually would ahve really made the pedals an inovative and unique sound, not just another block of noise in today's guitarists huge arsenal
thats true. i read he had to learn to play right handed when he was learning, because his dad was there and he wasn't aloud to play lefty in from of his dad for religious reasons. he was dominant lefty though.
true. his father was religous and superstitious and believed that left represented evil so hendrix learned to play right-handed so when his father came along he would play that way. of course he was better left-handed since he was dominantly lefty
ya, thats also why he writes with his right hand I bet. once you learn to write one way it hard to change, especially if you do so at an early suggestible age.
how gullible do you have to be to believe that the left hand is a sign of the devil...
5-24-69: San Diego Sports Arena Fat Mattress opened). SET LIST: Fire, Hey Joe, Spanish Castle Magic (Sunshine jam in the middle), Red House, I Don't Live Today, Star Spangled Banner, Foxy Lady, Purple Haze & Voodoo Chile.
Later Jimi is interviewed by Jim Brodey for The San Diego Free Press (published 6/13/69).
IMHO 'Hey Joe' & 'Hey Baby' from Isle of Wight are the SICKEST versions of each song...
his out of tuneness kinda gives off a chorus used in the 80's.. Hmm
