  • I already know exactly how to reach sustainability but I could not possibly do it in 500 characters. It includes keeping capitalism but limiting it not through laws, but through common sense. The consumer (and voter) is at the root of all this runaway capitalism and the evils it brings by falling for advertisements spurring the pursuit of the high life, and achieving it through the purchase of cheap goods imported from communist nations.

Buy local and only what we need is the true way.

  • If you're interested in a concrete suggestion on how we can reach sustainability: check out the venus project. Also try watching the Zeitgeist addendum movie - it's available for free on youtube. (it's among the favorites on my channel if u can't find it).

I think the alternative presented there is great, but watch it and make up your own minds about it.

  • Most of the developed world is already on the gradual decline of economic growth. Only the Muslim countries are in a state of huge growth now so what do they propose we do. Are we to limit their growth somehow? How do we do that if they don't agree? It seems to me the inevitable result will be depopulation of one kind or another.

  • @rollinshultz : i'm sure you're aware that not the muslim countries, but primarily the western civilization is responsible for the unsustainable society of today. Surely the muslim countries are in growth, but their output of pollution does not nearly match ours. So dont even think of pointing at them to solve the problems we've created. Sure, they need to be part of the sollution, just as everyone, but the initiative is ours.

  • @selvmordspilot The growth I was addressing of the discussion of population as a factor in the unsustainability was on population growth. I keep hearing we need to take steps to limit population growth when the west is already in an unsustainable population decline. It is said a country needs 1.8 % growth to maintain a balance. Most European countries are at 1.2 and the US is at 1.8 with uS citizens alone or 2.2 with the addition of Ilegals

  • @rollinshultz the rest which would not take.

The muslim countries are said to be at 8.4% I do not personally care about the 8.4% but I do not want to hear anymore about how the west should limit population growth.

  • @rollinshultz :_ yeye, i understand what you mean. But a reorganization of society would actually allow for the population to grow a lot more without problems. Population growth is only a problem under the current conditions - but i have to say it is one of the lesser problems :) None the less, i'm glad you address them.

  • Very good video.

Isn't one of the problems that there is no common definition of what the carrying capacity is for the planet? What is acceptable crowding, pollution, and use of resources for some is intolerable overconsumption for others? And of course the carrying capacity changes as technology advances and is able to produce more out of fewer resources (increased efficiency). Hard to reach a consensus on what level of consumption the steady state economy should be built on.

  • I agree. It is difficult to specify carrying capacity for a nonhuman species in a natural environment. When you add the ingenuity of humans to the mix, the calculations become that much more difficult. The most rigorous and timely work on this topic is the ecological footprint. The Global Footprint Network conservatively estimates that we are globally overshooting capacity by about 30%. Even with efficiency improvements, this cannot continue indefinitely.

  • @akmpaw We should start with a small community and measure it as a science experiment and do the math and multiply . Maybe we should send the question to Mythbusters and let them figure it out for us.

  • Thank you for the video. It illustrates our problem very well. However, I wish you could also present options showing what choices we make in our daily life would progressively reverse our problem.

  • Thank you for the encouraging comment. I will be working on additional videos to provide ideas about policies and actions to achieve a sustainable economy. Stay tuned...

  • Beautiful sentiments, and so logical! Nice work.
