  • the lady in blue looks like marcy darcy from married with children at 2:44.AGREE?

  • My ears are bleeding, jesus i only made to 3 min and 36 sec before i had to bail .....yuk

  • 超great!!!!!!

  • Anyone else realise they had 2 drummers and one of them looks like a black wolverine?

  • Ah yes, the days when great guitar players could krank up the amps without being shut down for being "too loud" @ NAMM

  • Kramer guitars were the shit back then.

  • Did anyone else notice the big Seymour Duncan advertisement in the background?

  • Sounds terrible. Ands they didnt even get the main riff of the song right. FAIL.

  • this is crap. two of the best performers ever to pick up a guitar laboring through this shit makes me sad.

  • steve and eddie doin covers, such a shame

  • a homo& a guy who can't write music get fudged

  • @5150mad1 said w/love - i think that 'unchained is abt as good as any arangement ever was (&)how he intro's to 'pretty woman' is sooo cool.

    - he really changed guitar playing and a zillion lol & steve wannabe him.

  • Steve looks just a little gay.. :D

  • steve stevens would love to be eddie van halen

  • Stevie must have been delighted how these 2 cocked up wankers rape his great song. Only thing sick about this video are the haircuts of those guys ...

  • Steve's picking hand is unbelievable.

  • I'd say Steve holds his own FOR SURE. Eddie does his little bag of tricks, but SS is tearing shit up!!

  • @sbrave I agree with you totally!!! SS is kicking ass up there...meooooow!!!

  • Is that Tim Bogert??? WOW! The Vanilla Fudge?! The guitarist from the group, Vince Martell, was a friend of my family's in the late 1960's and mid 1970's, I was invited to a reunion rehearsal oh the group in 1974, if I remember right! I was lucky enough to listen to about 2 hours worth of the rehearsal, and afterwards, Tim asked me if I was interested in buying his car, a "Tomasin Pantera", for only $6 grand! If you ever read this Tim, you probably remember that too! Thanks for the memories!

  • @geetarnut detomaso pantera............

  • What would have been cooler is if Randy Rhoads was there : ( Randy was the phenom.

  • THAT WAS FREAKING COOL AS HELL !! I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE. Thanks for the upload.

  • While EVH's style is more technical, Steve Stevens is far more sexier in delivery....

  • who is singing whole lotta love , the police academy guy?

  • @MrJonswift200 holy shit!! I think it is.

  • I love both these guys, but I honestly think it's Ed who was on fire here - way better feel, much more interesting

  • Its 1986 or maybe even 1987

  • Thanks for posting. Very rare indeed. Steve and Eddie are both on. Steve is extremely fast - Gary Moore style licks here and there. Always better live and out of control. Could there be a soundboard recording of this performance somewhere?

  • Wow! Two modern guitar gods showing how it's done! AWESOME!

  • Obi Wan VS Darth Maul

  • On another note great performance here; technicality, tone, groove, and some kick ass vocals all on display

  • Steve was hungry and had something to prove, Eddie was drunk and road weary just looking to have a good time. Let us not read to much into the situation.

  • Steve can never win, what are you guys talking about? EVH can't be topped.

  • Its Bogert, Mullet & Stevens!

  • who is the drummer?

  • why is the clown from Police academy on stage with EVH?

  • 1985

  • Since when is making music a sporting event? All this versus bullshit has got to stop. That IS NOT what REAL music is about my friend(s). It's about communication. We might as well get mad at our grandmothers or children for ending a sentences with prepositions and tell them that they're language technique is lame. If we did that most of these comments on here would fail based on grammar and spelling!

  • @gmrios What else are we gonna talk about then?

  • Just look at Ed's smile. That's a man who loves to play and loves it because he knows how. Stevens looks like a homo.

  • What the fuck are you people talking about? Stevens sounded awful--he was all over the place--and doesn't have a single ounce of soul in him. He looks intimidated because he can't win. Ed's tone and his ability to talk are way more powerful; Steve "shreds" and it goes nowhere. Playing notes in key (barely) and playing them in rapid succession without rhythm or bends is mindless and embarrassing. Anyone can do that--but to talk on guitar is a whole new level of knowing your instrument.

  • @LifeIsPeeChee2010 "WHAT DO YOU MEAN, "YOU PEOPLE""?

  • too many cooks spoil the soup.

  • eddie got a sound like this \o/ :D

  • Eddy gets owned.

  • Steves playing on Vince Neils solo release blows away anything EVH did IMO

  • I think i would have fainted like a sissy girl seeing two of my heroes together on stage.

  • Tim Bogert holding it together brilliantly on bass and vocals....

  • @daveghaxton ya I was at G I T in 85 and this is exactly how I remember him singing, he kicks ass!

  • steve just demolished Eddie!! nice

  • @STORYTASTIC: How so. Please enlighten us with your storytastic opinion. However, before you share. Be aware that these two guitarist have two different techniques, upbringing. influences, backrounds, styles, visions, and attitudes towards the instrument. Let's not forget their own personality that they integrate into their music. IMO no guitarist is better then the other. Their ALL great players. Your opinion counts but is not respected in regards of your ignorant comment.

  • @EncryptedGod dont get personal Eddie is my ALL TIME FAV PLAYER...Steve doesnt come close to him...but like in several jams I heard and watched Eddie play..Im in my 40s ya know...Steve was just more on THAT nite thats all..dont get personal on NOOB TUBE..there is zero point..all the best

  • @STORYTASTIC Eddie was pretty demolished i think! I've heard better...but he sure LOOKS like he's havin a good time! i'm sure he's pretty tanked here....rock on Eddie and Steve!

  • @glueforall sniff some more glue, Eddie got demolished....how long you been doing meth?

  • @Lucicsux if you cared to read my post, i said eddie was demolished, as in wasted, and not up to par...i like both Stevens and Van Halen...and your point in "trying" to insult me is?

  • love the Police Academy guy singin Zepp!!!!

  • Steve Stevens is awesome!

  • wait this cant be 84 because eddie had long hair, maybe 85 / 86??

  • @elewsive he did in 85 and 86 also...i dont have a clue when this was maybe during the "Balance " era in 95

  • And one more thing evilskunny evh is a adviser for the fender/charvel corp.

  • Hes tending to his multi million dollar evh company and getting ready for a new album release. Asswipe!

  • steve is the def of kool!

  • Steve handed eddie his ass??? What a load of SHIT! any clown can play fast, its been tasteful which eddie has always been.. every little lead break he had, he really showed what he was all about tone wise and innovation. You can remember all his licks and He was pissing around too! steve was going for it! steve is a great guitarist but no were near EVH.. Just listen to fair waring.. eddie has tons of speed! he just dont like using it for flash!

  • is that the dude from police academy singing? hilarious! he sounds like zeppelin guitar noise! classic...

  • trade offs starting at 5:00 rock! stevens shreds that second fill after eddie's first scary riff of the night -

  • ewwwww van halen sucks steve stevens is more like it

    billy idol kills them all

  • ewwwww van halen sucks steve stevens is more like it

  • @sicshoanker guitar world and guitar player international have eddie van halen and

jimi hendrix the two most influental guitarist of ALLTIME! theres NO mention of steve stevens.

TO EVEN THINK STEVE STEVENS even come s close to edward van halens guitar genuis is

    a total TOOL.

  • @stratdem where's eddie now,steve is still playing! lol

  • I think everyone that says Steve Stevens ruled Eddie need to recognize that Steve is really going for it while Eddie is just screwing around and having fun. Steve is playing like he has something to prove, but Eddie is completely content just jamming.

  • @josiahgust EDDIE VAN HALEN CHANGED THE WHOLE GUITAR PLAYING WORLD

34 YEARS AGO LONG BEFOR STEVE STEVENS. Eddie Van Halen has NOTHING TO PROVE

he's already done it and alot more!

  • @stratdem My point exactly.

  • @stratdem Well being fair to Steve he was playing gigs too around the same time. Not the same type of innovator Eddie was but it's not like he started playing guitar 10 years after VH1 like you seem to imply-they are peers.

  • I gotta say "holy shit!!!" I hate to say this but I'm a huge Eddie fan, infect I started playing guitar many years back cuz of Eddie, but Steve Stevens was by far the best. He had some serious speed on that. Steve Stevens has alway been one of my favs too. Cool man!!!

  • Hmm. not sure when this came out, but I can hear eddies 5150 tone pretty badly. When the hell was his hair ever that short sans recently?

    Cool video man, thanks!

  • omg! unbelievable.

  • Steve Stevens kind of handed Eddie his butt. Sorry. Ed's great, but it's true.

  • @itowedin I gotta agree with you on that. More modal range, doesn't rely on the tonic as much as Eddie does. That really keeps things fresh to the ear.

  • Eddie soloing with Michael Wndslow at 7:05 !!!!!!!

a moment in Rock History !!!!!!

  • my god that bass player singer is just awesome

  • 2 gods on guitar

  • This look's more like 1985 because Eddy's short hair.

  • I was at this 1987 Namm show back in January 30, 1987 (2 months right after the last show in San Francisco of the 5150 tour). Michael Winslow was a super nice guy and Eddie was drunk as hell. Although, it didn't affect his playing as shown here. I remembered it was packed and I managed to reserve a spot on the left side of the stage. It was frigging loud and my ear was still ringing after 3 days!!

  • Tim Bogert is on vocals

  • Is that Johny Fever on vocals ?

  • Great vid...!!!!! Thanks for posting..!!!

  • Kramer Guitars...Now You're talking about the 80's!!!

  • @waveslider11

    EVH = Kramer

    SS = Hammer

  • Both are my two favorite guitarist. Eddies my favorite but steve stevens is exelent

  • @JTSpecial5150 wooow where the hec this came from? thats weird but awesome two of the greates axeman ever existed AWESOME STUFF ROCK ON GUYS

  • Sick!!!! WOW!!!!!!

  • Bogert rules

  • thumbs up if you think steve and eddie did some blow later on that day!!!

  • Whereas Steve seems to be dueling and playing fast licks that don't fit the song at all, Ed seems a little more interest in just playing littles solos that actually apply to the song. You can look at their faces and totally see 2 different agendas. Wrong song for both of them anyway asStevie Ray Vaughn should have shown up for this one.

  • @mrhuge815 LOL totally agree!

  • @mrhuge815 yes SRV was awesome but i must say i like eddies guitar playing more than steve stevens automatic shredding sure dont get me wrong stevens is awesome but i like eddies playing more

  • Damn, their playing just got tighter and tighter!

  • Steve Stevens blows Eddie away!

  • @road2ruins true

  • most bodacious

  • harmonic by eddie at 3.15 >.<

  • who is the pedophile on bass?

  • @SuperNoobTroll

Pedophile? Its Tim Bogert who has played with Beck and Carmine Appice.

  • @Nevigo hopefully not when they were children lol

  • @SuperNoobTroll ...That's Tim Bogert from Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Beck,Bogert and Appice! A great, great bassist, and yer an ass!!

  • Sorry to say but thats about the least rock ive ever seen Eddie look... ever... Looks like a fucking schoolkid. Steve for the win. In my opinion Steve is a better guitarist anyway. Thats still respecting Van Halen. Actually good on you Eddie, those days you played sober or rather at all.

  • that's too funny, the guy from police academy is on lead vocals

  • Great video... I would like to see the VH stuff from the 83' US festival...Steve Stevens is one of the most underrated guitarist of the 80's. stevens could hold his own with Van Halen all day long and might just win if it were a competition. Anytime two guitarist from different bands are on stage together there is some form of competition.

  • @dedcat70 I agree, Stevens was a great guitarrist back then with Billy Idol, not only aggresive and fierce in his solos but widely creative

  • Living proof that aliens are among us, Steve Stevens and Eddie VH!

  • Sad to see Eddie looking like a corporate yuppie in 1986 with the short haircut --- that's when I knew the real Van Halen was DEAD and GONE

  • @Hunkola sad to hear u care about such things

  • Namm 1987 right before he did SNL with GE Smith

  • Awesome stuff!!

Eddie totally owned Stevens for most that... SS had notes.. But Eddie had tone, rhythm and melody to go with it...

  • Tim Bogart is the bass players name.....One on the best

  • I think the bass/vocal is Tim Bogart, Vanilla Fudge, Beck, Bogart and Appice.

  • @WhatSayestThou yes is the beck band

  • Steve Stevens is trying to play like Eddie Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen IS Eddie Van Halen!

If Eddie didn't have his Michael J. Fox look at the time he would've beaten him for coolness, too.

At 5:21 he definitely looks caught by surprise and pretty astonished, though.

  • Sweet (*Y*)

  • That guys singing and playing bass was in the Jeff Beck group ,he recorded freeway jam and was teaching at MI in those days .

  • Judging by Ed's hard i'd say this was in 85 or 86

  • Masters of improvisation!!

  • That is crazy. Plus Steve is playing a Hamer guitar, not a Kramer, but whatever it was the 80's, I don't think they cared. LOL!

  • awesome to see those to battle!!! SS & EVH!!! does it get any better???

  • Lol @ 3:00 it looks like my math teacher got on stage and started rocking with EVH.

  • CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is Ed rocking a mullet?

  • @shtdaprdtr : you don't know what a fucking mullet is, if you call that a mullet.....what are you 16 years old? .......douchebag

  • Actually think Stevens won the duel as Eddie wimped out but Wtf is Arsenio Hall doing on vocals???

  • @Zakariah1971 Ive seen him beofre..what other bands has he played bass in?

  • Great audio!

  • why is that Black guy from Police academy on stage w/them..? OMG LMAO!!

  • Thanx a mint for posting this gem!! EVH looks so much younger and healthier than he does now, in this clip.

  • isn't this superstition by steve wonder and steve ray vaughn?

  • OMG ITS MICHAEL WINSLOW!

  • bass player looks like tim bogert

  • Who's the little Dutch boy making such a ruckuss?

  • Wow, that was great seeing Ed and Steve work together like that. They're two of my all-time guitar heroes, and I still love it if they'd collaborate on an album.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • That guitar tone and playing definitely doesn't fit the song.. I love both these guitarists in other situations but this just doesn't sound good!

  • Wow this is TOTALLY SICK and RARE WOW!!!!

    and SICK

  • Git schooled?? umm I don think so.. lol ha ha up to the first 3:20 seconds,.. the WHOLE ENTIRE band is playing within the INSIDE of the tempo of EDDIES LEAD PLAYING. in other words.... Steve's Leads are juicy and sexy but know this... the whole time everybody was under the spell and order of EDDIE'S Perfection WAND

  • Do you even know the song they're playing? Look the song up. The band is playing the song tempo and feel, not eddie's lead. Clearly eddie was the guitar star here but he too was following the song. Who cares anyway, by your statement anyone can tell you are probably close minded and love eddie so much you wish you could marry him and be but f#$ by him.

  • Wow, it sounds like Eddie had two bowls of weedilies that morning.

  • The two wildest guitarists ever (besides Steve Vai), together. Wild

  • steve stevens always made guitar playing look very gay while eddie was always smiling and jumping around. he made it look as fun as it really is. stevens is good but thats why i never liked him

  • I think Ed got schooled as usual in these situations. There's only so many tapping, harmonics and tremolo tricks you can do before it all starts sounding the same.

  • gotta agree with you this... not really versatile.

  • I love Eddie & Steve, great vid. But does Eddie EVER shut up??? Even when the band stops, he's still making noise- I'dhate to be in a rehearsal room with that guy :-D

  • you would hate to rehearse with him ,what are u crazy

  • @BamusicTUBE Ed is an attention hog, if he wasn't he wouldn't be Eddie Van Halen.

  • This was early 1985, probably January or February. You can always tell what time period it was in the past by Eddie's hair and look. He had just cut his hair at the begining of 1985. This is cool. I never seen this before. Eddie is burning and tearing it up as usual. Eddie and Steve are friends. Steve Stevens is a shredder, too. It's cool seeing both trading licks. I had a smile on my face listening to them. Thanks.

  • @cvjucla3 It was actually right after the 5150 tour had ended,so it was around 86 or 87.I know this because I still have the original guitar world with the pic and info. Not trying to be a smartass.

  • man even eddie cant get that quick picking back and forth from string to string like steve

    thats amazing

    at 6:00

  • Big fan of Steve, huge fan...but sound alone, you know when EVH is playing.

  • Is that Tim Bogert on bass and vox??!!

  • Nice mullet eddie.

I bet it was a great honor for Steve playing up there with eddie considering both of their backgrounds. By far two of my favorite guitarists ever.

  • @7:04 that's Michael Winslow.

  • Well spotted...That's crazy.

  • i think this was 1987.

  • Steve always has good hair. 25 years now...Same hair cut.

  • Yea...Stevens is the hottest! He has been totally overlooked and under rated...Buy "Memory Crash" if you want to hear something really incredible...Or just listen to a couple of tracks here...I have the CD in my truck though...

  • @dwilcox21, Memory Crash was awesome but check out both albums he did in Bozzio Levin Stevens. If I was stuck on an island and could bring only two cds, both of them would be coming with me.

  • well said man those two BLS records are incredible!!!!!

  • they have same style... kool. I love both!!!

  • HOLY CRAP!!

    My two favorite guitarists!!

    AWESOME!!!!
