Fred, your revisionist history is astounding. FDR's spending bounced the economy back, Republicans forced him to balance the budget and the depression worsened and then a MASSIVE amount of government spending, a little thing most people like to refer to as World War 2, finally ended the depression.
Glad to see Freddy boy finally came around to what Ron Paul believes. He didn´t seem to think printing money was such a problem back during the 2008 primaries. He scoffed at the notion that prniting money is dangerous during the debate.
This actor/politician always strikes me as a guy who throws some gargantuan farts. Is it just me or does not this fella look like he can clear a large room with one of his ass bombs?

Oh, Fred, an actor to the end.
Unfortunately, when the chips were down and you were running for president you were clueless.
But with a script, you are not too bad.
And of course the American public by watching these video will take you into their heart and believe that you fit for president and will vote you in. After all these dumbfucks voted for G.W. Bush, McCaine (even though he lost, he still received votes) and another actor Reagan.
Yeah but the dumberfucks voted for Hussein Obama. When he is through you will be wishing for G.W. Back. But no matter they are both puppets to the same master. Better wake up before its to late!!!
Crack me up! This guy is so awesome with his rye humor and has pegged our economy issues right on. Too bad he was too smart to last long in our political landscape. We could have used a logical thinking President.
I take issue with his line regarding "irresponsible home buyers". Does anyone other than myself remember the FRENZY that rising home prices caused? These "irresponsible buyers" were sold a bill of goods that the mortgages they took could be refinanced before their payments escalated astronomically. They were in a PANIC to buy a home, first off because GREEDY lenders were promoting mortgage instruments outrageously, and second because lenders claimed everything would keep going UP. How wrong.
Seeing we're discussing GREED, a condition that befalls most humans... what about those that had perfect credit coming in to this housing bubble, had a home they lived in already (if not two homes) and purchased a second or third (or forth or...) to "flip" them? After the bubble burst these folks realized they would never recover from the rapid fall in property values so they walked away. Not that they couldn't aford the home(s) but that the value fell so much, that it wasn't a sound investment.
if they "walked away", they still got foreclosed upon, credit ruined, etc.....you cannot just "walk away" from your obligations....unless, of course, you're the Treasury Secretary.
Wall-street pirates raking in the wealth of the USA, corporations bullying the government with threats of "ease our pain or we'll make the world suffer", sounds like our society is reverting to a "lord of the flies" mentality.. GREED WINS EVERY TIME.
Oh, wait... we never moved on from a "lord of the flies mentality" as evidenced by our current fall into decline similar to that of the GREAT DEPRECIATION. One would think people would learn from the past. Seems not.
Wow, grandpa. This was the worst and most IQ reducing kind of crap I've heard in a while. It's evident he never took Micro--or at least didn't pay attention. Nixon used to make fun of Thompson's "not too brightness".
Wait did he just copy Ron Paul i coulda sworeeeeeee he was one of them fucks Snickering each time ron paul was saying that were going down fast and hard if we dont immideitly change our ways... FRED YOUR A FUCKIN JOKE
Mark 3:28-29 Verily I say unto you, all sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme but he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of... damnation.
Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30
One thing you rightwingers forget is that YOU and YOUR president and YOUR congress/senate were in charge when all this mess happened. Remember your vote for W? Remember your flag wavings for him when he waged a phoney and expensive war in Iraq? Remember his tax cuts for the rich which now accounts for more than 60% of federal deficit?
So please instead of shedding crocodile tears and blaming "liberal economists" for this mess, just take look in the mirror to see the true culprit.
Gomez, I didn't blame the dems for anything. The economy is what it is...doing the same thing over and over again and expected a change is INSANE!...Obama's plan is to do the same thing Bush did, and it's not going to work!
...and settle down, Beavis. You're about a 10 on the tension scale.
I know you're trying to compliment him, but please, no "Sicko" comparisons: that movie's a lie. This brilliant tongue-in-cheek monologue is more like reading a chapter from Juvenal's Satires.
Riprake: you assume too much. Like "Sicko", Fred leaves out much of the whole story. Also like "Sicko", our country's economic and health care systems have become dysfunctional as the result of trying to be the caretaker for the entire world. By the way, stimulus packages don't force us to buy instead of save. My last stimulus check went into an IRA account.
By themselves, no. I would keep an eye on that IRA if I were you, though; no telling what someone currently in power might do to it. If you're fortunate, maybe the coming hyperinflation will simply render it worthless.
As to all that "caretaker of the world" stuff that brought us here, that is a complicated story. Even eight minutes is a bit short for describing the complete history of the past nine decades, don't you think? Naturally he had to stick to the present follies for this satire.
Fuckin a. That's why I voted for him in the primary. He knows exactly what the problem is, but for some reason, people want to follow Obama :( Fred Thompson '12
or we could take the money and pay down debt and figure out how to live below our means. the govt could give us money to do that but not for spending.
Actually, if you're paying attention here, the secret is to get everyone *else* to spend their money. Specifically, you want them to spend it all on something you provide so that you can save all that money for yourself and use it to pay your debts.
This is more or less how our government is planning to pay its debts (except that it won't be saving any money). You'd better conceal any savings you have, because under this "new" system, you'll be considered a thief for not spending money.
i wonder which Fred the Fred Heads support? the Plastic Fred of the presidential debate shows? or the Fred that now sings the same tune as Ron Paul?
what does this mean, Fred saying the same thing as Ron Paul? could it be that Fred has joined the growing number of others in saying, "Ron Paul was right"
no hes a conservative, almost all of the REAL conservatives hate all these bailouts Ron Paul isnt the only one who is against all this government spending, not by a long shot
Fred Thompson, just because you can look like a knowledgeable old grandfather doesn't give you the brains to comment on these economic problems with such sarcastic old "wisdom." Come on, maybe you could read a little more?
He's been saying the same thing since Barry Goldwater was still involved...you're old enough to remember it but, you sure as hell aren't smart enough to know the facts.
Wow Annie; you're so intelligent! Make sure your sarcasm detector is working....
You just sound like another moronic Democratic Party apologist to me. If you weren't sleeping for the past 30 years, maybe you would have noticed that the Republicans AND the Democrats have all but destroyed our once great nation. Do us a favor and take your partisanship with you somewhere else.
P.S. If Fred was such a great poobah, he would be President now. Instead, he acted like the Door Mouse in that great chidren's book, Alice In Wonderland. Maybe you've read it and know what I'm talking about.
Annie mush, my lead dog was named annie on the iditarod. Kept getting lost...had to shoot her....I don't ususally agree with Fred but he is RIGHT ON THE MONEY HERE. Wake up Annie and try to think for yourself for a change. And there is plenty of blame to go around for both parties so don't be so quick to point a finger, you may be standing in front of a mirror.
I appreciate your humor. I'm just passing through. BTW, I think I come by my point of view honestly. I've been living here as a legal resident, paying my taxes (my interview with USCIS is actually this February) since 1979 and I love American politics. I read widely and pay attention to what is going on around me. I know what I know.
Ack! Ack! And Ack again! A conservative friend sent me this, I assume because she thought some great truth had been spoken, but honestly!! What a load of bunk. So much for great insight. I've been telling my husband for years now that the U.S. is f---ked, as I watched Fred's party literally run a great country into the ground. And they STILL think they have the answers? And they still have the gall to think they deserve audience? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
To every single Paulbot nutcase trying to lie themselves or anyone else by trying to hand credit to Paul for the warning of our economic policies for this intentional destruction of our economy is the exact same pitiful idiocy as attempting to suggest that the warning to a hard drinking, chain-smoking 70 year old man will die from his abuse came true when he was actually murdered by a gunshot wound to the head!...Wake up and smell what youre shoveling before someone hits you with the shovel!
Same old politicians... 20/20 hindsight. Exaggeration compounded with no accountability but harsh criticism. But mostly, criticism with not a sniff of an actual plan. Only implied solution seems to be "save up". Maybe you could keep it real by saying "Save up as much as possible now, because you will soon be unemployed." How hilarious.
Yeah.....pretty much what Ron Paul has been saying. Pick up a book. watch some past videos. Check out Peter Schiff. Start a Revolution!!!! It's the only thing that will bring real change. Or you can join the one going on right now. Sip on that!
No....wrong....Don't get me wrong here. This was very good. But Ron Paul has been saying this for 30 years. And he said it every debate. He was THE only one talking about it. Come on now people. Just look up some past videos. Thanks Fred!
I understand his sense of humor, and I agree with the absurdity of Washington politics with regard to the economy, but I am amazed at how supportive Republicans were of rampant spending back when a Republican was in the White House, supporting a war that sure as heck helped get us into the mess we currently have, for example. A bit of hypocrisy, no? Now that their guy is out of the White House, they start ringing the "true conservative" bell again. Ai, ai, ai.
Re:"reputable liberal economists": I presume you are confusing social liberty with financial liberality (in other words, people who save stuff vs Bush "conservatives"). This is a common mistake which needs correction.
As for calling employment projects "digging holes and then filling them", frankly, such projects are how we managed to dig our way OUT of the Great Depression: by investing in the nation's infrastructure and resources.
Saving more: good. The rest is just Bush Jr repeated.
You're partly correct about how FDR addressed emerging from the Depression, but it really came about from war-time production and mechanization at the onset of WWII!
bs. show me. why isn't fred thompson the one that shows still interview for economic opinions? why is it that the week of the $700 billion bailout, ron paul was on every channel - fred thompson with 0 interviews? why is it that peter schiff (also austrian, and rp's advisor) is also on so much more now? fred thompson rips on these things, i'd bet my ass he'd be right there voting for them if in the senate or presidency. not as many bailouts as obama. but more military keynesianism.

THAT'S the whole problem, jackass! He's not pretending to be Madonna in attempting to gain support with outrageous and idiotic extreme statements as he thinks assclowns like you will get him elected....where all it does do is get him laughed at by even the half-way reasonable.
And I'd like to really end by quoting from Keyne's "General Theory":
If the Treasury were to fill old bottles with banknotes, bury them at suitable depths in disused coal mines which are then filled up to the surface with town rubbish, and leave it to private enterprise on well tried principles of laissez-faire to dig the notes up again. (p. 129)
For a detailed criticism of this fallacious sack of hooey I recommend Hazlitt's "The Failure of the New Economics"
Jesus christ, not this shit again. Seriously, this whole "conservative" spew is one of the biggest scams in history - keep a set of the population stupid, religous, and poor enough to keep the banana repulicans in power.
I applaud the satirization of Keynesianism, but I wonder if Mr. Thompson includes interventionist foreign policy, worldwide empire, and associated outrageous expenses in the category of "things that got us into this problem in the first place." He should. As far as "economic stimulus" goes, if printing money were the answer to our problems, Zimbabwe would be the wealthiest nation on Earth.
You can keep your one-hand clapping applause for that second in time that you find your life in imminent threat by non"interventionist foreign policies"...just another POS Pualbot running his ignorant mouth.

Your myopic wimpers don't take any effort, nit.
Whenever, if ever, you actually make an "intellectual argument" instead of insisting I respond to your puerile drool and ignorant aspersions you MIGHT just learn something.
ChipsShot, you don't appear to have anything to offer other than insults. You are a one-trick pony. Your "argument" amounts to "you disagree with me, therefore you're a moron." There is no reason for anyone to respect that. Your compulsion to respond to everyone you disagree with tells us all we need to know about you. I left my opinion. You insulted me. My opinion did not receive anything resembling an intellectual argument, so why should your insult receive one?

I take issue with his line regarding "irresponsible home buyers". Does anyone other than myself remember the FRENZY that rising home prices caused? These "irresponsible buyers" were sold a bill of goods that the mortgages they took could be refinanced before their payments escalated astronomically. They were in a PANIC to buy a home, first off because GREEDY lenders were promoting mortgage instruments outrageously, and second because lenders claimed everything would keep going UP. How wrong.
defactomode 3 years ago
If we go with your theory, then they were GREEDY because they were looking for a quick buck, or at least quick equity.
If one were to really believe that everything will go up and up....well, I have a bridge to nowhere to sell them.
If you follow Caveat Emptor you should always be on your guard. Did abuses happen? Yes. It takes two to tango, as they say.

Humans ARE gullible, and obviously, they did believe it.
defactomode 3 years ago
Seeing we're discussing GREED, a condition that befalls most humans... what about those that had perfect credit coming in to this housing bubble, had a home they lived in already (if not two homes) and purchased a second or third (or forth or...) to "flip" them? After the bubble burst these folks realized they would never recover from the rapid fall in property values so they walked away. Not that they couldn't aford the home(s) but that the value fell so much, that it wasn't a sound investment.
defactomode 3 years ago
if they "walked away", they still got foreclosed upon, credit ruined, etc.....you cannot just "walk away" from your obligations....unless, of course, you're the Treasury Secretary.

Seems not.

So please instead of shedding crocodile tears and blaming "liberal economists" for this mess, just take look in the mirror to see the true culprit.
simgomez 3 years ago
The chips were in place well before W...
darkhorse007 3 years ago
Gomez, I didn't blame the dems for anything. The economy is what it is...doing the same thing over and over again and expected a change is INSANE!...Obama's plan is to do the same thing Bush did, and it's not going to work!
...and settle down, Beavis. You're about a 10 on the tension scale.

It's like an 8 minute 'Sicko' on the TARP Act...of course looking from the right instead of the left.
ptf0246 3 years ago
I know you're trying to compliment him, but please, no "Sicko" comparisons: that movie's a lie. This brilliant tongue-in-cheek monologue is more like reading a chapter from Juvenal's Satires.
Riprake 3 years ago
Riprake: you assume too much. Like "Sicko", Fred leaves out much of the whole story. Also like "Sicko", our country's economic and health care systems have become dysfunctional as the result of trying to be the caretaker for the entire world. By the way, stimulus packages don't force us to buy instead of save. My last stimulus check went into an IRA account.
ptf0246 3 years ago
By themselves, no. I would keep an eye on that IRA if I were you, though; no telling what someone currently in power might do to it. If you're fortunate, maybe the coming hyperinflation will simply render it worthless.
As to all that "caretaker of the world" stuff that brought us here, that is a complicated story. Even eight minutes is a bit short for describing the complete history of the past nine decades, don't you think? Naturally he had to stick to the present follies for this satire.

or we could take the money and pay down debt and figure out how to live below our means. the govt could give us money to do that but not for spending.
blakeskid 3 years ago
Actually, if you're paying attention here, the secret is to get everyone *else* to spend their money. Specifically, you want them to spend it all on something you provide so that you can save all that money for yourself and use it to pay your debts.
This is more or less how our government is planning to pay its debts (except that it won't be saving any money). You'd better conceal any savings you have, because under this "new" system, you'll be considered a thief for not spending money.
