  • wow so much detail thought i was there in real life

  • Hi, just come across your layout, am trying to subscribe to all UK modern image layouts, yours looks great, I have my own site on here featuring both my old and new layouts, cheers

  • Thank you.

  • how did u do the sound ?

  • You need to fit a sound decoder and speaker (obviously using a DCC controller). I got mine from SouthWest Digital, but others do it as well. It's much easier to fit if you use the ESU harness and plug - also available from SWD.

  • The various comments on this video explain how to do it. Any problems, give me a shout.

    Matthew

  • Pro layout :)

  • Thanks!

  • hi i am looking to buy a 158 with dugital sound i was wondering how much wat the sound unit altogether (excuding the loco)

  • This came from SouthWest Digital. Best contact them for the latest pricing.

    All the best.

  • How much would all this cost..as in the layout train , signals . decoder etc? And how does the decoder work..does it detect the trains movement and so make the noise the train would?

  • Awesome video mate! Fantastic layout!

I havent had a model railway for years. Question..how does the decoder work? Does it sort of detect movement so makes the sound of the train moving away/moving etc? How much would a basic one cost..as in layout , a train and the digital equipment?

  • Thanks for the positive comment.

If you want to get into DCC sound, the best thing is to speak to one of the experts - ie Howes, Olivia's Trains or SouthWest Digital (who did the sound for my Class 158).

    All the best.

  • where can i buy one of those locos with the sound in?? or do you have to get the sound chip put in after?

  • Hello. No, you can't buy a Class 158 with sound pre-fitted. You need to fit a sound decoder and speaker (obviously using a DCC controller). I got mine from SouthWest Digital, but others do it as well. It's much easier to fit if you use the ESU harness and plug - also available from SWD.

    Hope this helps.

  • how much is the bachmann class 158 cost without the swd sound

  • As you can see from the input from merseyrail508124, you can expect to pay anything from £60+ depending on livery & condition.

  • how much are trains generally eg £10

  • usually around £60+

  • Thanks for your input. Don't forget, though, that the sound decoder & speaker add another £95.00 or so (unfortunately!).

    All the best.

  • thanx ill do that great train set though

  • do the traffic lights work automatic or do you controll them

  • You can put reed switches in the track to operate the circuit automatically, but you then need a magnet on each train. This is why I opted for a simple manual non-latching rocker switch.

  • how much did it cost for the whole of the train set?

  • Hard to say. I've been adding to it for ten years now and the only really expensive things are the sound locos. All of the scenery is just basic polystyrene, polyfiller & scatter so doesn't cost much at all.

Of course, the correct answer is too much! We all buy more stuff that we need - particularly locos.

  • how do you get the sound for the class 158

  • You need to fit a sound decoder and speaker (obviously using a DCC controller). I got mine from SouthWest Digital, but others do it as well. It's much easier to fit if you use the ESU harness and plug - also available from SWD.

    Hope this helps.

  • bloody brilliant, 5* and faved and subscribe :D

  • Thanks very much for your enthusiastic comment! It's really encouraging when people take the time and trouble to pass on encouragement. I think it's time for a new video (Bachmann Deltic with sound arrived this week!).

    All the best.

  • are those origional lights? my old 158s lights were a yellowy colour

  • Did I ever reply to this? If not, sincere apologies for not doing so.

No, these aren't the original lights. I had to rebuild the light cluster completely to get it to work under DCC. The forward LEDs are still yellow, but you can get white ones now which look much better.

    All the best.

  • great video :)

  • Thanks! I'm glad you like it.

  • Great model

  • Thanks! I appreciate the feedback.

  • I love the way you shot it with a fixed camera position that wasn't whipping all over the place. Let the trains run through some scenery, and you did. Excellent production. Outstanding modelling. Great work on the DMU sound, too. 5 big stars!

  • Many thanks indeed. I genuinely appreciate the positive feedback.

Yes, I too had found some hand-held videos hard to watch sometimes, so I used a tripod and then kept the train(s) running and moved the camera around as required. The editing down (using Pinnacle Studio) takes a lot more time, of course, but, for me at least, it's worth it.

    Thanks again.

  • Nice one 5*

  • Thanks a lot. I'm glad you liked it!

  • It's well awesome.Cheers. :-)

  • Excellent 158 sound!

  • Thanks! It's not the easiest decoder to fit and rebuilding the light cluster was a pain, but, as I hope you'll agree from my other Class 158 video, it was worth the effort.
