The reason the Han people look at the Xinjiang Uygurs differently is because most of them are thieves and crooks. Living in Shanghai, China for the past three years I have witnessed this first hand almost daily. Xinjiang Uygurs roam the streets looking for potential victims to pickpocket, even during the day. Absolutely no fear whatsover, from what I hear. It's because Xinjiang Uygurs are a protected minority and nothing can be done to them, so the police basically just ignore these thieves.
There are about 100 million minorities in China. 18% of the total minority population is Zhuang. About 10% each for Uyghurs, Hui, Manchu and Miao. Tibetan is just 5%.
The interesting question to ask is:
Why Uyghurs (10%) and Tibetan (5%) have problems as accused by the US and Western news media, while the other 85% of the minorities are happily living in China?!

Han Chinese have been in Xinjian much earlier than Uyghurs in 200BC Han Dynasty.
