  • Where's part 3?? There's a bunch of people on YouTube with this movie but none of them have the full movie or at least part3!!I like it because that's seems like the longest Nicole Kidman part in the whole movie!!

  • Pantalaimon's voice is awful, Lyra has an awful actress. I JUST HAVE TO READ THE BOOK RIGHT NOW! I love the book! <3 <3 <3 <3

  • the girl playing lyra is an absolutely awful actress in this

  • the interpretive variations from the book are starting to turn this into something else all together

  • such a bad acting lol...even from nicole

  • @sera7ares

just the stunt ppl not the famous more seen ppl

  • @boycrazygirl567 in my opinion everybody's acting is bad...just seems fake

  • Haha that man on the boat plays an ogre in Ella Enchanted (:

  • The book and the film are basically two different things -.-

  • @Tom8fallon8

    Very true

  • I love when the lady's like "Don't they teach gyptain children to write." and Billy says "They teach us to write the truth, Miss." :)

  • Billy Costa is left handed (:

  • this film is shit compared to the book jesus

  • joe roberts is awesome!!!!

  • worst film iv ever seen

  • @bigrob555607 I dunno... the movie Eragon was pretty rotten as a film too.

  • @andrielisilien maybe but i havent seen it so until i do its still the golden compass lol

  • @bigrob555607 heh, I don't recommend it

  • sheesh, that nurse is soo creepy! the film makes them even scarier

  • I love the way they portray Pan in this movie, it rocks and so do the books!!! His Dark Materials for ever <3

  • It's too bad that horrible Coulter woman had her daemon stay at that awful monkey. Had it been a bird or something similar, it might have stood a chance of catching up with Pan and Lyra. Her poor planning.

  • @1andonlySaraEliza You can't choose your daemon, you do know that right? It settles as an animal that best fits your personality. Children have daemons that change shape because they're still changing themselves, still developing their own personalities and being shaped by what goes on in their life. They're still learning about themselves and growing, so it's hard to pinpoint exactly who they'll be as an adult. But in Coutler's case, she's an adult and firmly settled as a monkey. :3

  • i had a nightmare last night tha mrs coulter kidnapped me ahaha, i kid you not.

  • *what are YOU looking at?* lol!

  • This movie is like, an hour - how come Pirates of the Carribean 3 was three ? That bugs me so much - they water down good books when turning it into a film, but movies that are just movies can be as long as they wish. -_-

  • The screwed up this. They added and moved pieces of the story line. AND they didnt even make the entire movie to the firsst book, talk about a retarded cliff ender.

  • scary evil chick had bulgy big eyes...

  • Ah, well...

If you could read Northern Lights in an hour and a half... then perhaps this movie would be more like the book.

But movie producers and directors must reduce, amend and minimize. It is the skill of this editing which 'makes or breaks' adaptations.

Truely great books such as Lord of the Rings sometimes have the background history and thus a budget to do a decent job. But even LotR falls far short of JRR Tolkein ideals. Just imagine if LotR was nine movies rather than three. *sighs*

  • @QPhilms yea but imgine how much more expenses would be, they would have gotten till movie 6 or maybe 7 and then stopped due to not getting much revenue :P anyways LOTR has got an extended version to each movie which have many scenes that tell the background story

  • @ugaboj I dont think Lotr needed to worry bout lack of money, it was due to the amount of time it took film\edit\release. Had it done 7 movies, it would have pulled in even more $ which id have gladly paid aswell :P

  • @QPhilms This movie was done rather poorly. What they need to do is just stay true to the book as much as possible.

  • @QPhilms Producers and Directers find the climax of the story and then work around that by taking other high points from the plot, so most of the good stuff is unfortunately left out of movies:/

  • - (evil chick): don't they teache gyptians to write?

-(Billy): Yeha, but they teach us to write the truth. Hhaah smart boy, lolo!!! :)

  • Do gyptians like eyeliner?

  • Ratter was the daemon of some rantom kid named Tony, not billy....that's what I hate about film adaptations of novels. The inconsistency. They always change things. Best example would be Eragon. Best book I've ever read...worst movie I've seen in my entire life.

  • @bgibson36 didnt they also change the name of the king bear too. can't remember what he was called in the book but it was similiar to Iorek

  • @theonenonlysnk it was Iofur

  • the daemons are like souls, gyptians are like gypsies

  • Luv the little Balkan/Turkish bits in the music during the 'gyptian sequences

  • Fucking pedophile.

  • the internet is serious business

  • Fucking troll.

  • @xSangresx i dont know what all peado/troll stuff is all about but thumbs up! (even though to be historically correct thumbs up actually meant the thumbs down of the modern era)

  • @terencelll

    pedo :p

  • Gypsians arnt the Jews hahahaha, they're gypsies

  • I think you are correct, sah. The music has that Romani (gypsy) feel with the meandering clarinet and all. dhafniebasilio isn't totally off. The word "gypsy" apparently comes from some mistaken popular notion that the Rom came from Egypt.

  • @Kevnijoelvr92 Lyra' s daemon? He can still change form, because Lyra hasn't gone through puberty yet. When she has then he'll only settle on one form for the rest of his life.

  • yeah the gyptians are the jews. Anything that happens to the daemon will effect the human.

when mrs.Coulter s daemon is in Lyras room

Lyra closed the window on the monkeys hand and

    it effected mrs.coulter.

  • gyptians r the jews what does that mean

  • @MultiLovinglife the gyptians are gypsies, not jews

  • aren't gyptians basically the Jewish people in that universe?

  • I am reading this book now and I looooovvvvvvvvveeee it!I love this movieee too!!!!

  • yes. if a person dies, their daemon does too. but if a daemon dies, it only hurts the person

  • In the books, if your daemon dies, you die too. A few of the guards from Bolvanger are killed this way.

  • if a daemon dies the person dies. they're connected.

  • Well kind of, it kills part of their soul once their cut, but eventually they die of loneliness.

  • Does what happens to the daemons happen to their owners too?

  • A daemon and its human feel the same pain and can read each other's thoughts as well. If a human dies, its daemon dissappears, and if a daemon dies so does its person. Daemons can't go very far from their human without causing great pain to them both, and it is forrbidden to touch another person's deamon.

  • hey, looks like someones read the book. What a pity that the producers of this film hadn't done the same themselves.

  • @BriannaNLC actually, Witch's daemons can travel further distances than regular human's can, but even they have a limit, yes.

  • @1andonlySaraEliza I don't think witches daemons do have a limit actually, they can go as far as possible and please read the Amber Spyglass, ;) everything is explained in there

  • @BriannaNLC It's like a "Soul? For analogy purposes.

  • @k2blue7

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're sometimes referred to as souls in the book, but I haven't read it in forever so I'm not sure.

  • @BriannaNLC I'm curious to read the book. Do you reccomend it?

  • @amanda3685 I reccomend the Golden Compass aka Northern Lights. It is one of my favorite fantasy books ever. I personally do not really enjoy its two sequels (The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass) because I think they're boring, but you might like them. =) So yes, I highly reccomend THIS book.

  • @BriannaNLC thank you

  • @amanda3685 I reccomend the Golden Compass aka Northern Lights. It is one of my favorite fantasy books ever. • @BriannaNLC how could you find the subtle knife and the amber spyglass boring? you have to read them or there is no point to Northern Lights at all. It's like a puzzle you have to understand how the pieces fit together, then you get Pullman's point =)

  • @GablesHorse I do understand his point, but i just don't find them interesting, or at least not as interesting as the first one. <=)

  • @BriannaNLC

Ohh, I was just about to ask. Cuz when the monkey's hands got hurt, the lady was holding her hand like it was in pain, soo im like wtf, there connected or somethin?

    But thanks.

  • this movie has its own game. i already played it so i know what gonna happen. but its great if u always repeat it or watch its movie than to play rather

  • i am lost..this movie is so strange LOL

  • This is nothing like the book. booo...

  • Its called creative license.

  • Ya I know Its Crap. It might aswell be a different story.

  • hah she hurt her hand.lol.buhh umm i thought there were guests at the house when she exscaped..

  • @ashshulee11

There was a party going on when she escaped. the producers of the movie changed stuff around :(

  • I don't get it......could someone explain how do you "ask" the compass.....

    please EXPLAIN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

    thank you...

  • Its a state of mind, you need to keep it blank, and if you have the talent, the different levels of meaning kind of flow to you.

  • u "space out" sometimes right? that is how u read the compass~!

  • billy is adorable

  • I love this part of the movie

  • Nicole Kidman did a great job!

  • Yeah but I do think the part when she clenches her hand in pain is rather unconvincing.

  • Yes, it was kind of delayed...

  • If I didn't read the book, I wouldn't understand this movie. :/

  • Ive Read This Book So Many Timess Beforr But Do Not Know THe Prophecy Lol Any1 Knoww?

  • The Prophecy is a child will save all humanity. I just hope that person exists in our world. Our deamons are hidden inside us, so we can't talk to them as easily as in the film. There are many dimensions, and the Dust they speak of is the Higgs Boson Particle CERN is looking for! google and think

  • for petes sake is a book changed into a movie

book and movie come under the term FICTIONAL!

  • Yeah, the movie kinda was shit compared to the book. I was just talking about the book. Didn't you read Orwell's '1984'? He pretty much hit the nail on the head for the UK in 2009. It is the most surveillanced country in the World. Oh, yeah, that book was fiction.

  • kind of right, the prophecy is that the child will be tempted, and on the outcome will balance the fate of all the universes.

    the preverbial eve.

  • lol, ur are right there. but i think, if the battle is going on, 'humanity' will prevail. all churches/the magisterium, put eve as the evil one. where as i think, knowledge is the greates gift God could have given, after life. Jesus smashed up the church in his time. Organised religion is just control, not understanding. It's an insult they use Jesus' teachings. lol, i hope i'm kinda right.

  • oh my god... i love thsi part of the movie...

  • there just like them god damn nazis, sheit

  • I think the book is worth reading. There are much more details and in many places it is more interesting than the film. Although in my opinion it is better to read it before watching the movie - it gets much more interesting then.

The title is Golden Compass in the US, while in UK it is called Northern Lights, but it's still exactly the same book. :) Hope you'll enjoy reading it same as I did when I first saw it!

  • i am so much in love with the books... i was just curious about the film.. that´s why Im watchin it right now :)

  • that woman talking to billy costa is sooo annoying!!!

    I love Billy! :P

  • I'm in america and it was called the Golden Compass. I didnt know it went by a different name usually over here but the movie just sucks compared to the book

  • I really like Dakota Blue Richards! She's a good actress considering this is her first movie! But the only thing in this part I don't like is that she says: "Pan it's her she's runnin' the Gobblers!" with almost no feeling. It supposed to sound like really emotional and like Lyra's finding out something really bad and horrifying. Aslo, I would prefer if she said "Pan it's her, she's runnin' the Magisterium!" like in the trailer. But Dakota's still awesome!!!

  • is the name of the book the same as the movie??! i want to read the book!

  • its called the "Northern Lights"

followed by "Subtle Knife" and "Ember Spyglass"

the book's a lot different from the movie, loads more details and events.

    hope you enjoy it

  • Northern Lights is the American Version. It's called The Golden Compass in Canada and the UK I believe.

  • other way around

  • Oops! You're right XD sorry!

  • amber spyglass

  • The book is amazing! Read it!

  • "what are you looking at" loool

  • This is just no justice to the book. Its ok but it goes through the story too fast and you dont get a grip on whats happening and the different characters. Book much better

  • Urggggghhh.... It's so much better done in the book. She runs away during a party at Coulter's house and Coulter meets her at Bolvangar but doesn't know that Lyra is aware of intercision. Damn movie.

  • If the person can feel the same pain it's "animal" can feel, does that mean if you kill one, you kill both?

  • yes... if you read the book you'll see... x))

  • i hate that friggen monkey D:<

  • The boat is very nice i want a own boat and seal arund the world

  • THAT BITCH CAN DIE AND HER BITCH MONKEY

  • OMG billY IS SOOO FUCKING HOT!

  • billy is so hot

  • i used to think billy was cute, i wonder what hee looks like now in 2009?

  • I never thought of Mrs Coulter as blonde before this film

  • lol... all the time in the book they mention mrs coulter as a blonde woman xDD

  • No they dont she described as having sleek black hair in the books

  • I-Hate-Monkeys

and after this movie even more Dx

  • Aaaah, Billy Costa is such a cute boy!!

  • I DISPISE THAT MONKEY

  • lyra rocks she is awesome but that bitchy mrs. coulter needs to die a slow and majorly painful death and her demon to

  • i don't like the actress who's playing Lyra...Nicole Kidman is amazing though.

  • i love it how she always says '' hosh Pan''

  • "Anywhere's better than here." That's what Harry Potter said in the 3rd movie.

  • u r so cool havent seen the movie i am reading the books thanx a lot for posting the movie.

  • i like nicole kidman,she is a great actress

  • I agree. But why does she just stare after Lyra as Lyra goes to inspect her room? It doesn't seem natural.

  • I don't think she realized that Lyra would actually try to run away

  • Oi has anyone read el books?

  • Yep, they are brilliant

  • I'm reading the second one atm.

I heard they are going to make the second book into a film. Dont know when though. But Dakota said she hopes its soon, because they will all look older.

  • Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt. They are supose to look older, though not too old otherwise they won't be able to resist the "ghosts" that appear in the second book.

  • hahah! yeahh, that's a good point. Well, she turned 15 saturday just gone. I think she can pull it off. She's just got taller, and changed her hair.

  • Haha, if they pull it of any longer she will be fifty before they begin on the second movie.. hehe.. that would be nice.

  • hahah! I nearly chocked on my cake after i read that!

    Bahhahaha!

  • Kidman was author Philip Pullman's preferred choice for the role ten years before production of the film ...pretty cool...i would have thought of her to...she's great in this.

  • no because on like cruise ships and planes they show movies that arnet out yet

    luv dis film

  • is lord farr the ogre nish from elle encahnted?? cos he sounds like himm and looks like himm :P

  • yes

  • the film hasnt been out for a couple of years!! it came out like last year

  • the films been out a couple of years?

    no way

    like a year...

  • wow this isnt like the book at all lol

  • omg I saw this movie a couple years ago on a cruise ship and loved it! now im reading the books :P

  • LOLOLOLOL Cornish Egyptians :P:P

  • I believe it's Gypsians, actually.

  • Nope, It's Gyptians

  • Ah, it was something similar to Gypsians in the Norwegian version of the book I read ^^

  • haha bitch! 1:05 ... lol sorry its just that Nicole Kidman is good at being the bad guy in movies....I get so into it!

  • ma costa reminds me a lot of mrs. weasley

  • Well, then I must be stupid, lolz. I'm sorry if I made a mistake, lolz. I'll try and pay more attention. Sorry!

  • im sorry! i guess i messed that up. i haven't been in America that long though. I just came here about two weeks ago. You can't expect me to know the names of ALL the actors. But thank you for correcting me! Now i know! :)

  • No offence i live in england and i havent even been to america and i knew the actresses i'm sorry i know it seems harsh but its common knowledge wherever you are from :S

  • Hmm...isn't Pan usually the one that is the voice of reason?

  • Er...Nicole Kidman isn't Lyra...she's the Courter woman.....

  • Dude, what the hell are you talking about? Dakota Blue is Lyra, and Nicole is Coulter. Were are you from? Stupid ville?

  • dumbass

  • never read the book and i think the film is good but again i havent read the book and i love daniel craig and nicole kidman. plus i love the idea of ur own deamon....

  • weird.. wheres the party? and cooool nice going with the fingers-in-da-window thing hehhe

  • I TRULY beleive that the audio BBC version is also 9000 times better than the film...AND i also think that the cast of that ARE !MILLION times better at acting thir roles- Seraphina Peccola(witch queen) is that bird that killed DEN off eastenders! lol... BTW yeah A demon would be COOL as! (with any luck they will do an animated version) - this is SOOOO f-ukked up compared to the book! lol

  • see 2.20, i work at that place where she breaks into its, its now a steam museum but use to pump water around london. its based it hanworth/feltham

  • what a shame where can you see the extended/uncut version?

  • Who's the actress playing Lyra? She's wooden... and I've seen movies where the child actors are the best actors.

That said, I'm enjoying all the morphing that Pan does.

  • Dakota Blue Richards, and I saw she does an awesome job as Lyra.

  • Okay, that's your opinion. I think she could have done a lot more with the role than she did. I mean, Lyra is a BIG character. The actress didn't seem to convey that.

  • Well I think considering it was the first film she did well, alot better than Daniel and the rest did in the first Harry Potter. Like them I think she just needed another film to fully grow into the role.

  • the book is 9000 times better.I wish i had a deamon. :'(

  • This film ist one of the best book adaptions ever. At least, the original cut, this theatrical release is edited down from around 150 to 105 minutes: a shame!
