Rudolph Valentino's father's family were Russian Gypsy Circus entertainers.. Rudolph did try the high wire when he was younger. Much of what is known about Rudolph was fabricated by the studios. That is why, when he returned to his 'home town' in Italy, no one knew him or his family.
@ibbiwho Anyone wishing to read a fascinating and factual biography of Mr. Valentino should try "Dark Lover" by Emily Leider. His father was Italian, his mother French.
@TheAolele Yawn, yes we have all heard that one.You can be French and Italian and still be a Gypsy. Most Gypsies kept their ethnicity secret. And where did his father work, with the circus, supposedly as a vet.
@TheAolele I agree with you, completely. It's an excellent book. And, as you so rightly point out, Rudy's father and his father's family were Italian through and through, not Russian. Also, his father wasn't a circus performer or a gypsy. Rudy's father attended the University of Naples where he earned a degree in veterinary science, and continued to work as a veterinarian up to his untimely death. He also served in the Italian military (cavalry) as most of the men in his family.
Just adding a brief note. My grandmother told me that her handsome husband, Juan, got so angry at her palpitating over sexy Valentino in a film that he dragged her out of the movie theater. Grandma use to still giggle over his jealousy even when she was past ninety years old. Grandpa was a handome blond, blue-eyed Spaniard who always disliked seeing brunet men around my flirtatious grandma,Elisa!
Valentino worked as a professional dancer in New Yprk before he became an actor. Unlike other male film stars, it was Valentino's innate grace and intensity that made his acting movements seem natural. He knew how use stillmess and economy of movement unlike any other actor before. He also conveyed a burning sex appeal! Just watch him in the Son of The Sheik!
AWESOME!! Excellent film quality and music. Adding the updated music works beautifully with these scenes. Well done! About the spurs on Rudy's boots, I noticed those too. It's much to Rudy's credit that he can dance and move about so gracefully as he does with those spurs on his boots. He never once trips his partner or himself up while dancing.
haha that was fun i love the part when he is looking at the other girl who is dancing andthe girl with him is trying to get his attention and he just pushes her hand to the side haha and the part were he is sittin with the girl he was dancing with and she says something and he just pushes her off him haha lol all like 'your no use to me anymore be gone' lol:)
yea now i realized why he pushed her mean lady, hee i know when he doesn't want to be bothered with them he just is all i don't need you anymore go away! and that is Rudy's final word hee hee:)
Say - you may like an album i have - released in 1985 - Tango: Laurindo Almeida and Charlie Byrd. You may already have it, but i really like it. It does include La Cumparsita. Take care, thanks again.
i love tango and have some on WAX but my needle is broke - thanks for this. I also marvel at this era. What a time. Lots of wealth and dynasties - i love the part where the DRUNK wanders into the scene LOL. Thanks for this. I prefer this more mysterious time to the TMZ era, imo. Good job.
what a beautiful time to have lived... a dance is more eloquent than any measure of words. My dance shoes would have been more holes than leather. Lovely post. Thank you.
The actual official version is that Rudolph's father travelled extensively with the circus. It is strongly roumoured that Rudolph's father was really a Romani Gypsy, but because of the racial prejudice, Rudolph claimed to be Italian. After leaving the circus and settling in a permanent location, his father worked as a Vet, mainly with horses. Valentino was an excellent horseman and dancer. Romani do it better!
I'm from Rudy's home town, i can confirm through the grandpa's tales, that Rudy's father was not a gipsy, but a Vet, who claimed to be somehow related to a Pope by some kind of twisted genealogy. The Myth lives on. I actually live 50 meters far away from his home and dealing to buy it as well, contact me to see the advertisement. :)
@Maz75 From what I've read, popes from several centuries ago did have children, although not with the church's blessing. The d'Valentina part of his name is some sort of honorary papal title he was entitled to use. I don't know if entitlement to use this designation is via genealogy or by some other means, but it could be researched. His stage name was changed to Valentino.
@Maz75 Castello del Valentino in Turin, built in the 1600's, is currently used by the Architecture Faculty of the Polytechnic University of Turin. Before Italy was unified in 1861, certain Italian families held royal titles per a uniform nobiliary law, which included male succession. In 1929 the Lateran Treaty acknowledged all Papal titles created before that date. I understand that this was RV's claim to the d'Valentina part of his name. If you have additional information, please share.
After 1860 (italy to become an united kingdom) many of the former kingdoms honorificences and noble titles were lost, thus all the people with a decent monetary conditions could claim a noble title. The matter has to be found in the difference between "DON" and "MASTRO" Don is a noble, Mastro is a rich man. All rich could claim to be a "Don" by adding a strange heritage link. this happened to RV father.
@Maz75 I am confused. Are you saying that RV was not related to the Castello Valentino family? RV's father was not wealthy--he was a veterinarian who did travel with a circus and cared for its animals. He settled in Castellenata and married a French lady, Gabriella Barbin. They had 4 kids, RV being one, and moved to Taranto so RV's father could work on a cure for malaria, which he caught and it killed him. He wasn't a wealthy man, so he couldn't have purchased a title. Please explain.
@Maz75 I am confused. What part of the name is a nicknname? Also, can you provide a phonetic pronunciation for "Guglielmi"? Is the second "g" silent, as James Mason pronounced his name in the video "Swanson and Valentino"? Is it pronounced goo-lee-ell-mee, or goog-lee-ell-mee, or are both incorrect?
Valentino was a magnificent dancer, and this was the breakthrough scene of his early career. A few years later he and his wife, Natasha Rambova, did exhibition dancing as a pair. Their performances were said to be unforgettably beautiful and moving.
Rudy is the best tango dancer ever. He really knew how to move his body in a sensual way. He was a very physical man into a lot of physical activities. The second best tango dancer that i know of anyway is maybe Al Pacino(Scent of a woman)haha! Thank you for your video here. I would like to one day dance with Rudy. Here's to dreaming.
@80stimeagain I agree with what you've said. However, even though I don't like either Tia Carrere or Arnold Swartzenegger as actors, their tango to "Por Una Cabeza" in "True Lies" isn't bad either. Rudy could have done this style of tango as well or better, but the censors wouldn't have allowed it. As to his tango here, no offense to the relatives of Ms. Dominguez, but she's not even slightly attractive. I cringe every time I see Rudy wink at her. She's also too short.
Excellent - a brilliant idea and it works so well. It would be great if someone would edit out the interspersed shots of the other actors so we could see the dance continuously. Thank you for this version.

He also dances in Blood and Sand. Just as fabulous as this scene; in fact, anything he's in is sensational! What a man.
susannebass 1 year ago 2
Before the "not very manly" milongeuro pulls the knife out of his cloth waist belt Rudolf sends him into the tables with his leather horse whip
.Other great parts the drunken sailor walking across the dance floor and the Bearded, man sucking on the Bomba with strong Mate !
Rudolf love dancing and the women but his love for his family is the strongest!
This the best version on You Tube!
