  • Why do you have to lock your doors going through Nottingham? Lol anyone know?

  • Japanese cars are the best .

  • ^^ my mum got the 04 one but its a SR its £%"£ing butiful and rides better then my dads 05 mondeo it sounds better aswell with the SR exhaust =] its my new favroit car and its pritty cheap for £3000

  • Europa made in France

  • The Japanese name says Vitz.

I am one of the owners of this car, too.

There is little gasoline consumption and does a good run. (^-^)

  • andre seite bitte!

  • Одличан ауто

  • i own 04 model and it rocks!!! I love its dashboard because its not like other cars, i like its unique style.

  • I have an '00 one. The dash is awesome. It's a great car.

  • very good small car for Europeans, not for Americans- they are too big for it...

  • made in japan?

  • yes

  • @cicola

This one might not have been, its a Phase 2 (after 2003), where all of them except the 1.5's were made in france.

  • Looks like the indicators

    were faulty. Tisk, tisk.

    Bulletproof engine.

    Gearbox made of margerine.

  • somhow the shape of this car looks better with this color which i doubt we sell this color in the states

  • "6 years on" on a 54 car? Are we in 2010 now???

  • Citing wikipedia: "The Toyota Yaris went on sale in Europe early in 1999. "

I've driven the 2nd generation model (1.3L) as a rental, compared to the review of the older model here: build quality is perfect up to german standards (I live in germany, I should know :p), overall design very up-to-date, interior space immense. Only disadvantage that remains is noise on the motorway.

  • these reviews are awesome. they from people who actually own the car rather than top gear where its very entertaining but dosent really tell you if you should buy or not. and top gear alot of the time reviews supercars which most people cant afford. :)

  • sick.

  • i agree with EVERYTHING that man says my yaris is same year and same engine size! i love my yaris and wouldnt have it any other way! i like the spedometer means passangers cant complain about ur speed :D:D:D:D x x x

  • thats not a yaris that is an echo

  • It's either or. Its called badge engineering. It was called the Yaris outside North America, but in Canada and Australia it was called the ECHO. ITs the same car. Of course the second gen is now called Yaris everywhere.

  • international naming is now done by multi-lingual focus groups to avoid names like the Honda Bumhole and Mitsubishi Phallus. Shame I say.

    Nick

  • Okay. Thanks for the info. Didn't know that.

    Cheers.

  • well in my country the mini Hatchback Toyota is called Echo till 2004 then they changed the name to Yaris and in 2006 they made the sedan Yaris but the Hatchback version is more stylish and less fuel consumption .

  • my mates bought one of these shortly after passing his test. i dont like the clutch. i like really heavy clutch's. thats why i bought the old corsa B 1996. love it.

  • dummys @ 4:31 - the logo is upside down

  • It's on the steering wheel, get a life!

  • hey it has sunroof!! mine doesnt! :(

  • My mums had a yaris for 8 years only one small engine electrical component has gone wrong. Amazing reliability id say buy Japanese if you don't want to break down. Anything else is just a compromise really.

  • You Brits are lucky to have such an engine option like a 1.3 or a diesel. In Canada, we only get the 1.5 gas model, so we don't get those great mileage figures, which is a shame, because if you are going to drive such a small, cheap car, at the very least one should get the best mileage possible. We get the small cheap car, but not the great mileage.

  • I've never looked at it like that before, but I'm sure diesels and smaller engines will be finding their way into a 'showroom near you' soon. I don't know how much petrol is over there, but it's about 10 US dollars a gallon here and it only seems to be going one way.

    Kind regards

    Nick Hine

  • Over here, the manufacturers use larger engines because small engines don't sell. We still have a testosterone society. The Smart Car has dropped their diesel in Canada because people here do not like diesels. Now it is a gas, and the US model NEVER had a diesel engine. Diesel just can't sell here.

  • Also to go along with what you said tough emissions in the U.S. prohibit diesels. Such a shame. They can run on bio-fuels that are totally independent of the oil. I would totally rock a diesel, especially in a small car and get those great mpg! My ECHO sedan gets great mileage for a gas engine and for being an auto. I've reached 52mpg as my top mileage so far!

  • It's funny that diesels are considered as dirty fuels in the U.S. and yet a 2.0 litre petrol engine is considered small!

Horses for courses of course, but I think the price of oil will see us all driving smaller and smaller cars in future.

    Regards

    Nick.

  • Most not all Americans have dated info or lack of diesels. Its a shame too. You're right they are getting better with technology. I guess the only diesels we see in the U.S. is from VW and Merc. so far although Honda announced it was going to bring over a diesel for its Accord. I think you're right, with oil going up Americans will see smaller cars. I can't wait! I love small cars!

BTW, is the Yaris in this review the diesel one? I assume cause he mentioned 1.4ltr engine. Right??

  • Hi there

I'm sure the Yaris was a 1.5 Petrol.

    Cheers

    Nick.

  • I know Toyota offered a 1.5ltr gas which was the only option for North America but if you go to 2:13 or so in the video the guy mentions 1.3ltr, so I assume that's the diesel motor Toyota offers right??

    Thanks!

  • we get the 1.0 as well :)

  • A 80's dashboard, other cars with a conventional dash have a 20's dash then ;)

And build quality of a VW for example, those squeek and make noise when it's cold.

Quality is something wich you can see in 10-15 years, wich in a Toyota is precisely the same as when it was build!

A VW dashboard is going to desintegrate :D

  • This poor man is unable to pronounce his 't's.

The Echo and Yaris are unrelated.

And yes, the Echo failed to sell in the US because the people here are fat.

  • Sorry, maybe they mentioned this in the video...is this the base model for the UK? In the US, the base model doesn't have power locks/windows, nor a stereo/CD player. And here the Yaris (at least the 2007) has the heating/AC panel going vertically in the middle of the dash.

  • good car south africans love it

  • The reason that European cars are smaller than US ones, is that we are not all fat.

  • Lol, it looks like an insect with no legs.

  • have you ever been to europe? their roads are tiny, meant for horse drawn carriages, if that.

  • The reason we don't have big cars like Americans is that petrol is almost $10 per gallon! Globally all manufacturers are slowly standardising there ranges anyway, likelyhood is even Americans will be driving smaller cars in the future. And that is a real shame, 'Vive le difference' that's what I say.

    Regards

    Nick Hine

  • The ECHO sedan sold in NA and Australia was sold as the Platz in Japan and Yaris sedan in some other countries. The Vitz (hatch) was sold as the Yaris hatch around the world. Then in 2004 Toyota brought the Yaris to Canada but of course under the ECHO name. Then for the second gen Toyota brought the Yaris name to NA in hatch and sedan form. That's just the brief explaination.

  • So the echo is called the Yaris in other countries b4 the actual Yaris came out?
