Absolutely baffled by your Lizzie Roberts comments mate. Christie Moore is indeed one of Irelands greats and i pride myself in having a fair few cd's of his, however his version of Black is the colour is worse than dreadful. I have follwed the Scottish folk circuit for many years and believe me Hamish penned the song
@MrLiddesdale Hamish taught the song to Christie as Christie himself says - but Hamish didn't write it. The song can be dated much further back than either Hamish or Christie as the other poster says.
NO CHRISTIE !!!! ITS NOT THE FECKING GLASGOW VERSION, ITS A GLASGOW SONG. WRITTEN BY THE GREAT AND TALLENTED HAMISH IMLACH, PROBABLY WRITTEN ON THE BACK OF A FAG PACKET KNOWING HAMISH. RIP BIG HAMISH
@MrLiddesdale spot on. green fields of france is not an irish song either. no man's land by eric bogle. another fecking glasgow version. there's a difference between song writing and karaoke.
@MrLiddesdale The song wouldn't have been written my Hamlish as the first known recording was made by Mrs. Lizzie Roberts in 1916 before Hamish was born (1940's). It is unclear who wrote the song or where it originated from, many believe it originated in scotland and an american version appeared as a result of the scotish. Beautiful poetry all the same.
