  • Great video - love to see him live, thank you for posting. But those aren't the lyrics - those are just an English version of the song - completely different than the French translation. Here's the first verse (roughly - I don't speak Fr). Don't leave me We must forget All can be forgotten It escapes already Forget the time The misunderstandings And the moments lost We must know how Forget those hours Which killed at times With each thrust of why The heart of happiness Don't leave me
  • Those two guys in the background seem to be bored! How can you be bored listening to this? i dont get that...

  • c'est sa qu'on appel un vrai chanteur français bordel , rien a voir avec les merdes d'aujourd'hui

  • @FuckingProtox Enfin...un Belge francophone ...

  • Quelle Paroles!! Il me fait pleurer chaque fois!!!

  • Chelou l'ambiance du Pacino/De Niro derrière

  • Como ele parece com o chico Buarque !

  • C'est pas une traduction; c'est les paroles de la version anglaise avec les phrases tournées différemment pour les rimes.

It's not a translation, it's merely the lyrics to the English version, phrased differently for rhyme's sake.

  • Ayer je pleur..

  • omg, brel is one ugly som'bich

  • Pour la p'tite histoire: elle l'a quittée

  • @TeurteuleSenior elle ne l'a jamais quitté !

  • espetacular. j'aime jacques brel. j'ai bien l'impression que lino ventura

  • Non, it isn´t Robert de Niro. It is Lino Ventura! Greetings Larry.

  • Le mec à droite semble super passioné :)

  • @back2dos C'est Robert de Niro..

  • C'est dingue ce que c'est touchant... Big Up to Brel !

  • Slayerplsko i like how you call him mate. i wish all people said that here in the states. it's sort of like, no matter what you say, even if it's F you, it's still all good, cuz you throw a 'mate' in there. lol And I mean that in the best way, mate. LOL! see? I love it.

  • J'ai 442 ans et ça me fait rêver.....

  • j'ai 8 ans

  • Quelle belle chanson, quel mauvais enregistrement .. ;)

  • bana kitap al

  • Bon. J'adore Jacques Brel. il est incroyable. Ma chanson

  • Pour la p'tite histoire : elle l'a quittée

  • On dirait que le mec derrière c’est fait quitté lui :)

  • "Ne Me Quitte Pas" is the plea "Don't leave me." Sadder and more desperate and direct than "If you go away." Leave it be in the French.

  • chanson écrite en une nuit, une des plus belles chanson d'amour jamais composée, un talent inégalé, une personnalité exceptionnelle, pas assez de qualificatifs pour donner la mesure d'un tel homme

  • J'adore le mec derrière Jaque Brel on dirait qu'il est bourré

  • Cuando se oira cantar al AMOR asi otra vez:

  • «Poetry is what get lost in translation » R. Frost.

  • The translation is not CORRECT.it is n ot even near

  • Grand jacques singins as father in heaven talking to lucy or lucifer or eve, the vallyrie that god send down to earth because she jad judge and that against his will. Not really a lovesong if you check the lyrics

  • :'(

  • magnifique...

  • aaaah

  • ne me quittez pas- dont leave me

  • thats not even close from a translation man, ne me quitte pas is dont leave me, if you go away is translated in french si tu t'en va.

  • Tout les Belges parlent français. Je parle aussi le flamant

  • nice tune ...fella at the back looks a right nonce though

  • Terrible translation. Not even close. The english iteration is an entirely different entity.

  • @DanBlabbers This is not the translation of the original French song, it's just the English version sang by Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield and then by Madonna

  • @dmedina310 I know it isn't, that's why it shouldn't say "Here is an English translation." RIGHT before the lyrics to If you Go Away.

  • i hope people know this.

  • sincere and appealing....

  • The translation is "don't leave me" I've had french lessons as well and if you ask people from belgium - they say this is not french but belgian ...

  • @juttajanedoe Jacques Brel is belgian, but the language is still french

  • @nibortolum I know this is of course french - but my belgian mates of course talk of him as if he speaks belgian - not french. This is meant as esprit - not really serious!

  • the translation isn't a real "translation" dumbasses...

it's just the english version of this song, called "if you go away".

  • Não posso esquecer. apacont.org.br

  • worst translation ever

  • @piedzjie agreed

  • I'm french and your traduction it not it french

  • Comment removed

  • the translation is all wrong!! it's such a wonderful song and the translation really doesn't do it justice

  • Lino Ventura is in the background, not Robert de Niro. Great Jacques!

  • super!!!!

  • I'm French and I can tell you : This translation isn't good.

    For exemple :

"Ne me quitte pas = Don't leave me" and not "if you go away" ...

  • @NaturalK1990 The song is know as "if u go away" throughout the world :P and the translation is free. i mean not exactly the same meaning as the original song, otherwise the song wouldn't rhyme and therefore it wouldn't be a song :)

  • Une merveille

  • Les paroles sont tellement profondes et merveilleuses ...

  • Super!!! And Lino Ventura in the back, icredible...

  • listen to the julie christmas cover :if you go away

  • Who the hell translated this? Even Google Translate would have done a better job. This is so bad...

  • Very very good, I had tears in my eyes. BRAVO

  • "Let me be the shadow of your shadow"

    Wow.

  • I really don't think that's a translation, mate. It's completely different lyrics written for the melody.

  • @Slayerplsko i speak dutch , live in Belgium where we also speak a bit French and i must say the translations is not perfect

  • Grand poesie - cette chanson doit interprete par Brel seulement, les autres sont faux, ils ne sentеnt rien

  • j adooor

  • J'adore ♥. Brel is the best, definitely! But your translation isn't right...

  • I like that he looks directly at us throughout the song, such a genuine performance.

  • your translation isn't right!!!

  • @decentlawful Music. You know what music is, right?

  • J'ai 18 ans et cette musique est l'une de mes favorites. C'est ce que j'appel de l'Art.

  • @AnnaBreazy Pourquoi preciser que t'as 18 ans^^

  • @FafaDMusic Parce que j'ai envie et pour montrer que les ados de mon age aime ce genre de musique ;)

  • Guy in the background looks like Lino Ventura

  • Poor translation but nice try ;)

  • on c'est fait chier a faire des clips, mais putain ce sont sur les live que les gens exposent ce qu'ils sont et ce pourquoi ils le font.. c'est là le talent, c'est être, ce que l'on prétend être.

  • Tu me manque Papa chaque fois que j'écoute cette chanson je pense à toii

  • Super, Jacques Brel, unforgetable and Lino Ventura in the background. Wow, thanks France!!! Jim

  • @maerklinoldies He's from Belgium (they speak French and Dutch there - and a bit of German)

  • @maerklinoldies He is not from France. He is from Belgium (Brussels).

  • The english "translation" might be a new song but is No translation of the text.

  • This guy looks like he could eat bailed hay through a picket fence.

  • He said... Let me be the shadow of your shadow, the shadow of your hand, the shadow of your dog.

  • thats one ugly moddafukker

  • @Divus666 lol

  • I don't know if it's english or french that you don't understand but your lyrics are totaly wrong. Why did you post the english version of the song and not the english translation of the original french song. I think i'll have to do the translation by myself to post it here because it's a shame. (And the english version is really stupid).

  • Shame that you posted the wrong lyrics. You could at least have made a minute more effort to get it right when you uploaded this. Please change them.

  • @percey33 Lay off the guy (or girl). He says at the end of the post to check the responses for a more accurate translation. So why don't you stop being a douche bag and post them yourself?

  • Great great great

  • He is watched 4,531,625 times man in the back!

  • Those lyrics are very wrong

  • My Gosh I'm in deeep Love with his voice ! Don't Leave me !!

  • Yeah some stuff definitely gets lost in translation...plus the translated lyrics posted aren't even translated. Im pretty sure they are the lyrics for the English adaptation "if you go away" by Rod McKuen...a good effort but even the change in title loses some of the emotion. "don't leave me" vs. "if you go away". It loses the desperation.

  • The guy in the background is definitely not Robert de Niro. In 1959 when the video was taken he was only 16 years old. The guy you see is Lino Ventura

  • Robert de niro is realy touched I see

  • @nfsrf wouldn't have noticed if you not said. came from nirvana. but i love this EVERY TIME.

  • @nfsrf Damn you. Cannot unsee.

  • Lino ventura!!!

  • lyrics are wrong

  • It's funny that english people love this song. Do you understand all the lyrics?

  • Que cette vidéo est puissante ; l'oeil de Lino qui se dévie vers Brel lorsqu'on le sent ; il commence a ressentir sa chanson absolument ! Vive ces deux grand hommes ! ( A mort Justin Bieber!)

  • Au fait, pour la petite histoire, c'est lui qui l'a quitté, pas le contraire... Ce qui n'enlève rien à la beauté de la chanson.

  • Listening to the next version, we realize he worked a lot.

  • Please don't call it a translation. These are other lyrics, bad ones on a great song. Nina Simone did well singing it in french.

  • yeah the translation is horrible

  • The translation is totally inaccurate.

  • I listened this song in Arica.. about 40 years ago .. I was 12 years old.. Oh God I found the original guy.. Oh Jacques set me free please!!

  • La traduction... zéro quoi

  • This is not a beautiful song, it´s a heart breaker

  • Simply the best...

  • whoever he is, he looks like he's sat through this same bloody charade a few times too many

  • ne me quitte pas means ''don't leave me''

  • It's Robert De Niro in the background!

  • No! It is his friend the famous French Actor Lino Ventura. They made a movie together called "L'emerseur".

  • @boolves *L'emmerdeur

  • Cette chanson a quelques paroles pleines de sens. J'adore cette chanson!

  • This is a truly beautiful song and a truly moving performance by Jacques Brel and his piano accompanist. I particularly love the pace / pathos of the trills, so perfectly placed in the high register of a pub piano. A treasured recording (1959.

  • go back to the Rovers Return Peter Barlow and get out of Jacques single camera shot!

  • And when twilight comes, for a sky to blaze, do the red and the black not wed?

  • Whats Deniro doing falling asleep in the back? Great song.

  • ne me quitte pas = don't leave me

And yet that's not mentioned in this translation, not once....

  • @freakyrockchick yeah i agree with you, actually the whole song is not a translation at all :/

  • We can't traduce it in English... There's a lot of joke with the words and the sounds that we can't understand if we don't speak french (all the genius of Brel).

  • Comment removed

  • the translation is wrong I think 'ne me quitte pas' means 'dont leave me' as said in serveral other comments

  • "ne me quitte pas" actually means, "don't leave me"...

  • Comment removed

  • i can't, the look on his face, i can't leave him

  • My friend the lyrics you posted there is nothing to do with the translation of this song. But the song itself make worthy it

  • Why don't you correct the lyrics yourself ? I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to go back 30 pages and 2000 comments to find them.

  • I'm sorry your translation has nothing to do with the actual lyrics.

  • I can't find any semblance of the french lyrics back in this English translation. It is not at all helpful. The video itself is really heart breaking and very beautiful.

    Jane.

  • Your translation has nothing to do at all with the actual lyrics, where the hell have you found it ?

  • @KarasuOh It's obviously not a direct translation, but a version created so that the words would rhyme and work well as a song in English. This happens quite a bit with songs translated into English, for example "La Mer" became "Beyond the Sea" in English, with very little resemblance to the original lyrics.

  • Belle chanson ;)

  • I just keep crying....i am 17 and just discovered the biggest belgian singer...So proud to be belgian!!

  • @sarahneplevrednav Better late than never

  • Doogit, the text posted below the video is not a translation. Please remove it.

  • Who's that guy in the background? :D

  • @TheLazyPoltergeist

:D George Clooney without dieting :D

  • @marymaryhollywood XD only funny answers....he really was Lino Ventura.

  • @TheLazyPoltergeist he sells olives

  • @TheLazyPoltergeist It's Robert de Niro ! :D

  • @TheLazyPoltergeist

It's Lino Ventura one of the best french actors... one of my favorite actually !

  • @TheLazyPoltergeist that guy in the background is the Lazy Poltergeist who falls asleep!

  • @TheLazyPoltergeist it's recorded in a café

  • my dad

  • @TheLazyPoltergeist the guy in the background is a french actor, who played later in a lot of gangster films.

  • cute :P

  • This translation is so shitty that it deeply express how weak is the English language in romantic stuff. And Ne Me Quittes Pas is not "If you go away", it's much more "Don't leave me". Where did you learned french damn?

  • @style2ouf7 Well you don't have to be a dick about it.

  • @style2ouf7 That is obviously not an attempt at a literal translation, but rather a rough translation that was changed so that it would rhyme and work as a song in english. Also, you could just translate the title as "Don't Quit Me" rather than "Don't Leave Me", since quit means the same thing in english. For example, see the song "I Can't Quit You Baby" by Otis Rush (and later, Led Zeppelin).

  • Un grand monsieur
