In my humble opinion and my own research, Sanchin kata is a "breathing/strenght" kata that helps the karateka to achieve what is called "The iron shirt", which enables the karateka to strenghten his muscles to the point he can be beat strongly without suffering significant damage to his body. This fellow karateka is not employing his tanden nor keeping the correct sanchin posture that helps you tense all your muscles. Just an observation, every karateka can interpret the kata as he likes.
I would agree with your research and appreciate your point but this is a Goju kata here being performed in the Shito style which is performed somewhat differently than Goju. However it is considered to be an important kata in Shito. Also, I would think it hard to determine this karateka's level of tension under his gi. If he is in excellant condition it may require what seems like a small amount of effort to achieve the "iron shirt".
I think (and have seen in my little experience) that the Iron shirt is achieved by the combination of correct posture, breathing and muscle contraction. But of course, maybe there are other ways to accomplish this. That's why there are lots (perhaps too many) karate styles. There are many ways to accomplish the same thing!
Although Karate originated from Okinawa, many forms derive from the cultural exchanges between Ryukyu islands and China; that is, insertion/adaptation of chinese martial arts' techniques and forms so that isn't strange :)
Sanchin, Seisan, and Sanseiryu Kata are from chinese martial arts (Shorinryu or Shorin-ken if I'm not mistaken) can't remember if there are more. I'll ask my Sensei one of these days :D
@anhkhoinguyen yep. that's right. I think they're called sam chien or sam jian. southern mantis, hung gar, and especially white crane all have a version of sam chien.
hes just doing it they way he was taught in shito ryu by his master. Not all karate styles do the same kata in the same way. What you pointed out that you say hes "not" doing correct, might be true in some styles or your style but for shito ryu this is the proper way.
Sanchin is, by far, my favorite kata. While others show more flair and movement - in my mind Sanchin is the essence of Goju. It is particularly powerful the slower and more exacting you perform it.
Ehh...please check on your kata knowledge before mocking some other karateka. Sanchin is a 'breathing' kata. It doesn't concentrate on physical movement much.
yeah but hes not constricting all the muscles in his body while doing it. when you do sanchin everything should be as tight as it can be including the diaphragm so he should make a very aquward sound while breathing if he is doing it right and his hands are held right they should be out on angles not straight infront of him
doing hard sanchin too often is very bad for you though too. also the idea is to only constrict certain muscles. but you're not really squeezing them. it's more of a natural tension. at least from what i know of it. each version is different between styles though. i never heard you're supposed to have your arms out at angles either, i always heard parallel with the shoulders. just so you keep your elbows in. going to wide really opens up your centerline.
its an open public forum. and shito ryu doesn't have an official page, there are many branches of this art. i stated my opinion, based on what i've been told by many karate-ka. you don't have to agree.
not true. this kata is a dynamic tension kata when done full power. but doing it that way too often is dangerous i've heard. it is about breathing yes but so is every other kata. its also about alignment, and which muscles to have tense and which to have loose so you're strong, yet can still breath and are mobile.
its not bad for u and its not a defense kata so theres no reason why your mid section shouldnt be exposed from what i feel while doing it it helps tighten up alot of torso muscles
it can be. every sanchin teaching sensei i know agrees. even miyagi chojun himself has said you shouldn't practice doing sanchin full power all the time. ...it is a defense kata as well, just because you don't know its applications doesn't mean it's not. it's also a posture kata...in which having your arms flared out is a bad posture. you don't need a kata to breathe or clinch muscles...that solidifies my point, it does have applications as does any other kata.

what are the criteria of whether or not this kata is perfect, and why is it so important to the mastery of karate? Also, why was it removed from the shotokan curriculum?
Sanchin Kata came from India in the 6th century. All Okinawan Karate have this Kata, if they dont they should. This Kata was made to make the body and the mind strong. Ibuki and isometric contraction of muscles promoted good pysical ability back then. Best regards ibukimas.
Shotokan was a shurite based style, which didn't do Sanchin, whereas Goju-ryu, Uechi ryu were naha-te style which did Sanchin. The Founder of Shito-ryu kinda did both Shurite and Naha-te and included the Sanchin kata into the cirriculum.
Shurite emphasizes fast, "whip-like" strikes, whereas Naha-te emphasizes "kime" which is the sudden tensing of all the muscles in the body the moment of striking, thus generating "Chinkuchi", literally meaning "one-inch power", similar to Bruce-Lee's one-inch punch. Its the basis of all Goju-ryu striking techniques (Goju-ryu has plenty of grappling techniques as well.)
any way, one of the bether senseis, sensei tomyama i think, sayd that "if you want to know how to do a Kata, you must go it 10 000 times" :P
and that isnt to unlikely becouse it means you hafto do it every singel day for allot of years, and the japanese people did do so when they learned karate for life neccesary means!
When Chojun Miyagi Sensei was asked how many times he practised Sanchin a day, he would reply 30 times and only 1 out of the 30 times he would consider totally satisfactory.
In the old days beginners started by learning Sanchin for 3 years before learning anything else. 3 years, 10 times a day X 1000 days, is about 10,0000 times.
Kata is what is in your heart and soul, Sanchin, as many other Kata have meaning and substance. I see you have much passion for Kata, Kata does not need commentary, debate or anything else, it is Kata. How you perform Kata to the best of your ability is in your own heart, do not judge other of there own heart, just as you would not want them to. Don't put it out there, you may risk getting in cut off. Understand?
@ibukimas are you making kata relativistic? I get what you're saying, but there is generally a correct way to execute a kata that will benefit you and complement the martial art.
Monk Ordator, the creator of the Tibetan white crane style of Kung Fu, didn't have youtube; all he did was watch a crane fight a monkey and meditated all day. Of those two, which is more ridiculous?
what is he doing!!!! your never ever supposed to show this kata any where. not on tv not a tornaments or on internt...this is traditional kata that never leaves class room and this is high disrespct...lord
ya but u dont learn from this u would learn from some1 who understands it. not completly cause no1 understands sanchin. but seriously if u want to learn kata go take a class. u learn it from here were are ur questions answered??
I'm not saying that u can just learn the kata from this video.. it's just that this kind of videos made by notable masters whose knowledge is beyond any doubt can be a nice help for those who want to improve their style or just take a different view.
Heh, it is not nearly so mytical as you make it out to be buddy. martial arts is not magic. It is practical. The tradition of it is to use the intelligence of many generations to perfect it, which is why it is so astoundingly efficient. To restrict it too much demeans that. Think about it.
yes but it is a kata u keep with u only for practice not for show. yes it is ok to do in class but to put on internet for people who have no clue on how deep it is can change the kata and how it works and destroy that 1 kata and basicly make the next american karate.....GO OKINAWA
seriusly... screw you, karate is free to leave the class (lol, look at "karate kid") becouse it is to great help for people who wants to learn from masters that doesn't flaw. it could be to allot of help for the ones who take this seriusly, people cant learn a kata by watching this vid anyway :]
