The media and local chambers of commerce always preach how much the climate in southern California is like the climate of the south of France or the Spanish riviera..I guess it sounds better than telling the truth and admitting that its more like Somalia or Libya! ..Having lived in LA for 2 years i can assure everyone that its more like Mogadishu than Barcelona!

Why you have the Beatles tagged is a tad confusing to me...or talking about the weather. dionnemichael has it right. Albert Hammond had nothing to do with the Beatles and the song is about going out to California to make it big in show Biz and the harsh reality of it not working out. Still, great song choice and because I went looking, I now know more about Mr Hammond than I ever knew before ;)
@MsSpifty Man, everybody knows the Beatle are truly from California! They were just faking an accent; I know because I am myself from Sweden and I can tell their swedish accent is very bad!
California- land of extremes! It was 113 degrees in Los Angeles this past Monday (Sept 27th 2010) and 102 degrees here in Huntington Beach one mile from the water. Fast-forward to Saturday Oct 2nd and I'm watching the monsoonal rain pouring down after the thunder and lightning show. We're supposed to have Santa Ana winds next week for three days so here come the fires all you canyon residents! Hope u cleared your brush to 100 feet.
I was stationed in Monterey, California in the Air Force. I know it only rains in the month of January, when my loved ones in the midwest are making snowmen.
Well I dunno about the metaphor...the thousands whose homes have been destroyed by fires could've used a bit of rain. Besides, Hammond says 'it pours', so by your logic, he thinks bad things happen there all of the time
@RobsnVegas Yes I am well aware of what a metaphor is, and I am aware that he uses rain metaphorically, much like the metaphoric Southern Californian rain that tragically melted the metaphoric cake in "MacArthur Park".
I was merely commenting on the accompanying video of the forest fires, which don't tend to happen in areas that have a decent amount of rainfall, and I was saying that the phrase could also be taken literally, as the poster of this vid intended.
In addition, I was mentioning that his metaphor was that contrary to popular opinion, bad things happen there all of the time ("it pours"), and not just now as the state is bankrupt. Sorry for the confusion.
As a drummer I have to say that flam on the tom really works well in this song. Somebody told me it's a flam between the snare & the tom but I'm not sure about that. What I do know is it really sticks out and sounds great.
@MrBogleOgle I'm gonna piss in your mouth if you don't shut up! I was just saying the guy was wrong about the lyrics! He totally missed it! Deal with it!

Not everyone is going to like every song but this was a HUGE in it's day. I was in southern CA. for two weeks back in 1992 and it rained everyday, bad thing about it we were there to play golf everyday in San Diego.
I am astonished at some of these comments! This is a great song, but is NOT A HAPPY SONG! It is about broken dreams, and a broken young man who "got on board a westbound 747" to live the California dream and failed miserably. Listen to the lyrics! "I'm out of work, I'm out of bread, I'm underloved, I'm underfed, I wanna go home!" He then says "Don't tell how you found me" and "give me a break" - he is suffering miserably, and doesn't want his friends and family back home to know...
It actuallyrarely pours here anymore, but I wish it would.....with all the drought from global warming, and fires, half of Cali forests will be gone in 25 years..:-(
Not to take anything away from this great song, but I thought I'd provide a little trivia for music buffs. If anyone follows the band, The Strokes, Albert Hammond's son (Albert Jr.) is one of the guitarists in The Strokes.

@MsSpifty I used the Beatles in the video which is why I tagged them :)
I was just making a video for the fun of it. I was not necessarily trying for it to make sense nor did I mean to represent the meaning of the song.
Your points are all valid but like I said I wasn't trying for anything ^.^
