Here is my idea, i dunno if it is good or not but anyway: having a internet based laptop is a plain good idea but when the internet is down, so is your entertainment. So why not add "offline mode" onto it. What i mean is what if you can put an SD into the laptop, download your apps (e.g. Angry birds, Google Docs) store them onto SD so if your laptop stops working and you still have no internet when recieving a new one you can always plug in your SD, just a thought :)
@Blitzerboy1408 Or the sd card could be fused into the computer permanently and you can use everything offline and when the internet is connected you can use the internet stuff too!
In theory this is a good idea but in reality basically the worst idea of a laptop. Laptops were created for the purpose to have a portable computer, but what's the point of portability if you don't have Internet to run your internet dependent OS? your laptop becomes useless.
No connection = no Chrome OS
No Chrome OS = no internet.
No connection with chrome OS = why even have the thing?
You don't have to install applications? What the hell do they do, just magically appear when you decide they should exist on your computer? You still have to install programs you download from the internet...
You know, I was satisfied with my Chromebook for a couple of days, settling on the idea that the benefits of such a computer for its simplicity and no-nonsense operation outweighed the inconvenience of a cheap, slow, nearly useless Atom processor, but then a Google Chromebook Ninja "helped" me, wasting hours and hours more of my time because she refused to acknowledge it was the processor, instead blaming my connection.
@cosmiccountrynoir That's not totally true. When you use web apps, say Fieldrunners for example, something local is installed besides a bookmark. But it is much lighter than installing an application to a conventional computer.
Wait and see, though. With Native Client, all your applications for the desktop may be coming to a web browser near you!
@gnarlywreckagedude If you're just surfing the internet and stuff, a macbook's a terrible option. Macs are good for some things, and apparently do everything else exactly the same as a computer for half the price.
@jomarixa8080 Mmmm, I don't know what you're getting at here. Are you implying that Chromebooks aren't slow or insulting me for saying they're slow when they are? @TheComputerSage It's a little different than that. I think Microsoft (and Apple!) are in for quite a wakeup call, this year, when they realize that their OSes are nearly insignificant, on their way to extinction. That is....
@evilturtle999 This very long explanation is why I have settled on keeping my Chromebook and stopping complaining. Even at this early stage, this Chromebook is just amazing. It does so much with so little and DOESN'T do so much that I constantly got caught up with, like tweaks or maintenance, installing or uninstalling software that took SO LONG! All I need is a good browser on solid hardware and sooner rather than later, the entire world is going to realize the same :-)
@evilturtle999 They're OSs are dominant. Windows runs on the most PCs and Mac OS X is industry standard for media companies. iOS also is the tablet computer leader. Not insignificant. Chromebooks do boot up fast, but new hardware is taking care of that. The MacBook Air, for example, only takes about 20 seconds to boot up.
@thekeyring I said a lot of stuff. I'm not sure exactly what you're saying to what you're responding and it seems like it might make sense in context. What exactly isn't significant? The OSes? In a comment I made that preceded this most recent string of comments, I acknowledged the OSes for what they are.
I disagree with your suggestion that the MacBook Air boots up in 20 seconds. Not true in my experience. Maybe a month ago I was in an Apple Store, shut down a MacBook Air then, with the....
@evilturtle999 ...stopwatch on my calculator watch, timed it from pressing the power button to full boot. It took 50 seconds! This is a 2011 MacBook Air with at least an i5 processor using an SSD! I asked for someone to help explain what they meant by saying it was "Instant On" in the description displayed on the iPad beside the MacBook Air and he said they meant "out of standby".
What a bunch of CRAP!
ANY computer coming out of standby is pretty much "instant on". But NOT the MacBook Air!
@evilturtle999 You said Microsoft and Apple had redundant OSes which I think isn't true. & fair enough about the Bootup time. I just think that's the one thing Chromebooks have going for them, they boot up quickly. Not too long ago HTML files were thought of as documents, and they haven't fully transitioned away from that.
@thekeyring Ohhh... you're thinking of this: "I think Microsoft (and Apple!) are in for quite a wakeup call, this year, when they realize that their OSes are nearly insignificant, on their way to extinction." If you read earlier on, especially in my initial comment to TheComputerSage, you'll find that I don't entirely dismiss them. Yet. I made a prediction in 2007 about the way things were going, and so far so good. I predicted that in 2010, Microsoft would no longer be such a big deal....
@evilturtle999 ... I also predicted that in 2012, Microsoft would be a distinct minority. In May 2010, Apple became the most valuable tech company in the world. In August 2011, it became more valuable than Exxon Mobil, so becoming the most valuable company, period. My current prediction is that, by or on October 11th of this year, Microsoft really will have become a distinct minority. That's just a date I picked due to personal significance.
On the other hand, Google is really onto something...
@evilturtle999 ... with search, Chromebooks, Android.... They're ensuring that they continue to be dominant in all areas. They want to be EVERYWHERE and know that location location location is still everything. I DO think Microsoft is going away, slowly but surely. I'm guessing that Windows 8 will NOT be a hit. I could be wrong, but I'll be very happy if I'm right. The downfall of Microsoft would be symbolic and allow a new generation to move onto other things and get a fresh start. With....
@evilturtle999 ...Microsoft would go a huge chunk of the Old Boys Club mentality, which is very much opposed to the freedom of the hacker (not cracker) community... which created and maintains the Internet, does Linux, and generally does whatever it wants, responsibly and for the good of all.
When that mickey mouse get a video card for games and put a windows there or a mac os can.be call a netbook but only a browser that sad because all mac and pc have that and more
this is how you install programs on a chromebook...... oh yeah, you can't
you don't need cds to install programs on a chromebook...... and you'd be stuck if you did (no cd drive)
Why would you want to buy a netbook with only Google chrome on it when you can get a laptop at the same price that you can use offline, install and program you want etc. INCLUDING CHROME!
@HarryPotterFan134 That's because the laptop at the same price starts up and wakes from sleep many times slower than a Chromebook, and to top it off, the laptop does not have 3g. Not to mention, you always get the latest OS for free, so your Chromebook would always be the latest.
@Cinimod105 A laptop can have 3g, either via a dongle or built in like the HP mini. A laptop may start slower, but why sacrifice everything a laptop can do just for a faster boot! a chromebook can't even play video files! It can't print unless you connect it to a PC (you know a REAL computer). You need the internet even to use it and if you get Ubuntu Linux on the PC then its free! I wouldn't get one if it was £10
@HarryPotterFan134 But why would Google want to be a Windows computer, or a Linux or Mac OS? Google is all about the Internet and advertising. Games and other heavy applications are written for the three main desktop OSes (if Linux can be called "main" on desktop). Native Client could change all that. Really, it's changing it right now. You can play a few good games right inside the browser, now, and it seems possible that any app could play withing Chrome and Chrome OS.
@Cinimod105 The greatest advantage to the Chromebook is that it ISN'T a full desktop. If you're looking for the same machine, you're looking in the wrong place. Google has no business in the typical desktop. But if Native Client becomes popular, I see no reason Google wouldn't become more popular than Mac OS or iOS or Windows, all of which are heavier to use (with the possible exception of iOS which I know just about nothing about) and quite unnecessary given the direction things are heading.
@evilturtle999 Um, yeah, that's what I was trying to point out. I don't think anybody really performs hardware intensive tasks while commuting on a train or sitting in the park. I think the Chromebook caters to people who want productivity on the go. In other words, it's meant to supplement a desktop, not replace it.
@Cinimod105 And I'm saying that "hardware intensive tasks" as far as the Internet goes, should be handled well by the Chromebook. Some of the most "hardware intensive tasks" seem to be "productivity" (like Google Docs) and checking the news on Google News (especially loading the news sources, themselves).
I've basically stopped caring about this, though. Google isn't much better than any other company, doing pretty much the bare minimum, which suits stupid people, but most don't want it.
@evilturtle999 When I say "Hardware intensive", I really mean stuff like photoshop, movie-editing, crysis, etc, all of which, can't run on the Chromebook, which is just as well, since the Chromebook doesn't seem to be meant for these.
@Cinimod105 Yeah. And that's good, for now. I suspect with Native Client that all programs, hardware intensive ones included, could be run within a browser.
I just can't keep complaining about it. It's not doing much good. Better to use what's available to me to get things done :-/
@HarryPotterFan134 If you can go without the conventional desktop and applications, the Chromebook is wonderful. I still waffle on my opinion of the speed. Sometimes I'm not at all annoyed by it, other days I can't get things done fast enough. But the boot speed really is nice. I don't hesitate to shut down or suspend my machine.
I don't miss the desktop. At all. I am GLAD to be rid of Windows. And Linux and Mac OS, for that matter. I only wish that these machines came with faster processors.
if they made OS than base on internet, they can do this. if the tea is hot, than wa will stop drink tea forever? and any other hot drink? come-on this is petty.
yes. just instal from the disk, see the instaling on special tab, (with next button and all) and it will show as a app of chrome on new tab. it's have to be so hard?
People clearly do NOT know what a chrome book is for. It is for getting internet. That's it. It's not designed for Photoshop, games (besides online ones), or other programs. It is strictly for the internet. A concept that the majority of the ignorant YouTube users can't seem to comprehend.
it's no metter. it's the same. just instal from the disk, see the instaling on special tab, (with next button and all) and it will show as a app of chrome on new tab @Orberror404 i
Yay. Let's take away all the power from the users and put it on the network so if the network ever goes down in a war THE USERS WONT HAVE ANY SOFTWARE TO DO ANYTHING!!!!
AHHHH GOD PPL STOP ARGUING THE CHROMEBOOK IS ONLY GOOGLE CHROME IN A LATOP/NETBOOK FORM ITS SIMPLE ASS HELL WHAT IS THERE NOT TO GET ABOUT IT TRY THIS FORMULA VV
Interesting... ChromeOS is simply a browser on a bog standard laptop and to get programs on it you need to go to their webstore online and "Download" the program you want for it to simply download the site to your PC and gives you a link on your new tab page. Interesting thing is that not all of them work offline making the program more like a link to a site.
Let's try getting all my stuff I want on there... Let's see if I can get full games like The Sims 3 without a link to a site or Office.
That's, like, the fucking point of web-based applications. On a side note Sims3 and Office might possible in the future, since everyone is turning developement into hurr cloud systems and web apps. Also remote desktop or a light Windows on it and you can install it directly.
@SirQuill Hey mate. At the moment CSS and HTML aren't powerful enough to make a "web-based application" as good as one on your proper PC. Then again you can use flash, but it won't actually make it possible to view offline and I personally think Flash is slower than HTML5...
Think about it: everything being given away for free like Office simply by going to a site. I don't think Office will EVER be on a Chromebook nor Mac. It's a Windows exclusive.
GOOGLE CHROME ONE PROBLEM I HOPE U CAN SOLVE THE PROBLUM OK ANYWAYS ON MY DELL INSPRON SOMETIMMES I GET ON IT AND IT DAMN SAYS GOOGLE CHROME CRASHED:(
GOOGLE U NEED TO DO SOME WORK ON THIS ONE YOUVE MADE AN AMAZING BROWSER SEARCH ENGINE EMAIL GOOGLE+ BUT SIR YOU NEED A LITTLE HELP ON THIS ONE CAUSE IVE INSTALLED CHROME OS ON AN SDD IN A LAPTOP WITH A 3GHZ I5 AND WHEN I PLAY NETFLIX I CAN BARELY MOVE MY MOUSE. AND ITS ONLY A WEB BROWSER HOW BAD CAN U FIAL AT MAKING AN OPERATING SYSTEM IVE MADE MY OWN IT MAY BE UGLY BUT ITS WAY BETTER THAN THIS BULL IM NOT TROLLING IM TELLING THE TRUTH 4GB RAM AND 3GHZ WITH ONLY A WEB BROWSER RUNING ... WOW!!
@HoldenB97 No there are applications available in the Chrome Web Store. But theres no kind of installation procedure because it all comes from the net but you still got your applications.
@Sheiff1 I'm thinking about getting one, but first I just need an answer to one question: why would I buy a chromebook instead of a tablet with a keyboard dock like the Asus Transformer?
@Sheiff1 well since all of these are browser-based I don't see much difference between using a chromebook and Android except the keyboard, which is solved with Transformer.
@Sheiff1 Did you know that a Chromebook as about exactly the same hardware as a cheap netbook but made fast because it's using a linux-based kernel (uses Linux but tweaked). I could almost garantie that if you get a very cheap notebook and install "ChromeOS" on it, it's the same except that it doesn't have that Chrome logo on the screen top
I don't need to install programs on my current computer either google, but geuss what? I do want to. Seriously google stick to android or make a better attempt at the netbook industry with a real operating system.

evilturtle999 1 month ago
@evilturtle999 This very long explanation is why I have settled on keeping my Chromebook and stopping complaining. Even at this early stage, this Chromebook is just amazing. It does so much with so little and DOESN'T do so much that I constantly got caught up with, like tweaks or maintenance, installing or uninstalling software that took SO LONG! All I need is a good browser on solid hardware and sooner rather than later, the entire world is going to realize the same :-)
evilturtle999 1 month ago
@evilturtle999 They're OSs are dominant. Windows runs on the most PCs and Mac OS X is industry standard for media companies. iOS also is the tablet computer leader. Not insignificant. Chromebooks do boot up fast, but new hardware is taking care of that. The MacBook Air, for example, only takes about 20 seconds to boot up.
thekeyring 1 month ago

But NOT the MacBook Air!
evilturtle999 1 month ago

I predicted that in 2010, Microsoft would no longer be such a big deal....
evilturtle999 1 month ago
@evilturtle999 ... I also predicted that in 2012, Microsoft would be a distinct minority. In May 2010, Apple became the most valuable tech company in the world. In August 2011, it became more valuable than Exxon Mobil, so becoming the most valuable company, period. My current prediction is that, by or on October 11th of this year, Microsoft really will have become a distinct minority. That's just a date I picked due to personal significance.
On the other hand, Google is really onto something...
evilturtle999 1 month ago
@evilturtle999 ... with search, Chromebooks, Android.... With....

KaiserDragonBlast 2 months ago
this is how a chromebook plays a video file: "you dont need to play a video file"
Fr33man101 2 months ago
this is how you install programs on a chromebook...... oh yeah, you can't
you don't need cds to install programs on a chromebook...... and you'd be stuck if you did (no cd drive)
Why would you want to buy a netbook with only Google chrome on it when you can get a laptop at the same price that you can use offline, install and program you want etc. INCLUDING CHROME!
HarryPotterFan134 2 months ago
@HarryPotterFan134 That's because the laptop at the same price starts up and wakes from sleep many times slower than a Chromebook, and to top it off, the laptop does not have 3g. Not to mention, you always get the latest OS for free, so your Chromebook would always be the latest.
Cinimod105 2 months ago
@Cinimod105 A laptop can have 3g, either via a dongle or built in like the HP mini. A laptop may start slower, but why sacrifice everything a laptop can do just for a faster boot! a chromebook can't even play video files! It can't print unless you connect it to a PC (you know a REAL computer). You need the internet even to use it and if you get Ubuntu Linux on the PC then its free! I wouldn't get one if it was £10
HarryPotterFan134 2 months ago
@HarryPotterFan134 But why would Google want to be a Windows computer, or a Linux or Mac OS? Google is all about the Internet and advertising. Games and other heavy applications are written for the three main desktop OSes (if Linux can be called "main" on desktop). Native Client could change all that. Really, it's changing it right now. You can play a few good games right inside the browser, now, and it seems possible that any app could play withing Chrome and Chrome OS.
evilturtle999 1 month ago
@Cinimod105 The greatest advantage to the Chromebook is that it ISN'T a full desktop. If you're looking for the same machine, you're looking in the wrong place. Google has no business in the typical desktop. But if Native Client becomes popular, I see no reason Google wouldn't become more popular than Mac OS or iOS or Windows, all of which are heavier to use (with the possible exception of iOS which I know just about nothing about) and quite unnecessary given the direction things are heading.
evilturtle999 1 month ago
@evilturtle999 Um, yeah, that's what I was trying to point out. I don't think anybody really performs hardware intensive tasks while commuting on a train or sitting in the park. I think the Chromebook caters to people who want productivity on the go. In other words, it's meant to supplement a desktop, not replace it.
Cinimod105 1 month ago
@Cinimod105 And I'm saying that "hardware intensive tasks" as far as the Internet goes, should be handled well by the Chromebook. Some of the most "hardware intensive tasks" seem to be "productivity" (like Google Docs) and checking the news on Google News (especially loading the news sources, themselves).
I've basically stopped caring about this, though. Google isn't much better than any other company, doing pretty much the bare minimum, which suits stupid people, but most don't want it.
evilturtle999 1 month ago
@evilturtle999 When I say "Hardware intensive", I really mean stuff like photoshop, movie-editing, crysis, etc, all of which, can't run on the Chromebook, which is just as well, since the Chromebook doesn't seem to be meant for these.
Cinimod105 1 month ago
@Cinimod105 Yeah. And that's good, for now. I suspect with Native Client that all programs, hardware intensive ones included, could be run within a browser.
I just can't keep complaining about it. It's not doing much good. Better to use what's available to me to get things done :-/
evilturtle999 1 month ago
@HarryPotterFan134 If you can go without the conventional desktop and applications, the Chromebook is wonderful. I still waffle on my opinion of the speed. Sometimes I'm not at all annoyed by it, other days I can't get things done fast enough. But the boot speed really is nice. I don't hesitate to shut down or suspend my machine.
I don't miss the desktop. At all. I am GLAD to be rid of Windows. And Linux and Mac OS, for that matter. I only wish that these machines came with faster processors.

People clearly do NOT know what a chrome book is for. It is for getting internet. That's it. It's not designed for Photoshop, games (besides online ones), or other programs. It is strictly for the internet. A concept that the majority of the ignorant YouTube users can't seem to comprehend.
But hey, that's fine.

TheOz1999 2 months ago
@TheOz1999
>without a link to the site
That's, like, the fucking point of web-based applications. On a side note Sims3 and Office might possible in the future, since everyone is turning developement into hurr cloud systems and web apps. Also remote desktop or a light Windows on it and you can install it directly.
SirQuill 2 months ago
@SirQuill Hey mate. At the moment CSS and HTML aren't powerful enough to make a "web-based application" as good as one on your proper PC. Then again you can use flash, but it won't actually make it possible to view offline and I personally think Flash is slower than HTML5...
Think about it: everything being given away for free like Office simply by going to a site. I don't think Office will EVER be on a Chromebook nor Mac. It's a Windows exclusive.

@Sheiff1 I'm thinking about getting one, but first I just need an answer to one question: why would I buy a chromebook instead of a tablet with a keyboard dock like the Asus Transformer?
alnajina 3 months ago
@alnajina Android and chromeOS are different. In my personal opinion, Android is not suitable for work while ChromeOS is good.
Especially if everything your company is using is Google Docs, gmail, calendar and basecamp. (As in our company, for example)
Sheiff1 3 months ago
@Sheiff1 well since all of these are browser-based I don't see much difference between using a chromebook and Android except the keyboard, which is solved with Transformer.
alnajina 3 months ago
@alnajina In android, you cant really use google docs, and work with calendar and gmail quickly.
Sheiff1 3 months ago
@Sheiff1 Did you know that a Chromebook as about exactly the same hardware as a cheap netbook but made fast because it's using a linux-based kernel (uses Linux but tweaked). I could almost garantie that if you get a very cheap notebook and install "ChromeOS" on it, it's the same except that it doesn't have that Chrome logo on the screen top
