I always enjoy your videos. This one is great. Thanks for the recipe - and the pronunciation lesson. By the way, you might want to add that whiskey just before serving. A bit more kick that way.
I hesitate to say? You can make them without the whiskey and they are still very good. Our website (link in description) has a site link called cooking with whiskey that may provide more info.
Love the Dickel apron! I have been looking for a recipe that will cure my winter cough and I think I may have found it. Have an excellent weekend, sir!
This looks like a cool recipe, and I'm going to try it, since my mother's allergic to raw apples. It was hard to listen to it with the dueling banjos in the background, though. I kept having the urge to cover my butt with one hand (lol).
Well you should cook them for the full 5 minutes each stage, and they will be tender, so the raw will be gone, as fer the banjo, well thats a different story ha ha
Thank you for the tip! I haven't made these yet, since the last time I had a nice bag of apples I had all the ingredients for apple pie, but I will once I get a nice bottle of whiskey! Cheers!
Actually, No. It doesnt burn off the alcohol. To burn off a good chunk of the alcohol, it needs to be at a certain temp. for a while. This usually applies to foods that are fried (beer battered fish) or using wine to deglaze pans for sauces. These are exposed to temperatures upwards of 400 degrees for a fair amount of time. Even then, its very hard to burn out all alcohol.
A low boil will not remove all the alcohol from food, especially for only three to 3-5 min. Its sort of like heated cider.
Yummy! I never heard of these! I'll try them. They would be great with pork! Do you have a hangover the next day?? LOL! Well done video! 5 cuisine stars!
How long has this guy been pumping radiation into his forehead? Grandma would turn in her grave is she saw u using the micro oven as a cookin timer like that: ass up all in your face
you are an idiot! did you see him puttin anything in the microwave? its called a timer, something maybe a select few from alabama don't know anything about.
to add to LadyTigerLily's response, the only thing microwaves can do is burn you,it's not like X-rays or atomic radiation. Have you ever seen a sheet of lead in front of your microwave oven,no?hmmm.... Why does this stupid rumor still exist?
dipshit...maybe you should try out a fancy oven with a TIMER and make some real food?? instead of just frozen burritos and hotpockets from the microwave
Not into the whiskey thing though hubby might say it was a waste lol. Never heard of these befor but very interesting to hear the types of things you eat over there for thanks giving. Happy holiday to you and family.

These look *Great*. Hooch apples were one of my favourite treats growing up, especially hooch-apple pie(Although the apples got really soft after being boiled and then baked, but we still loved it :P)
Now, a Q for you: The hooch apples I recall were covered in a dark, sticky syrup.. any idea what that was? Just cook the liquid down into a reduction?
I have cooked it down, you can almost use like a syrup. My preference is to keep the apples firm, so I tend to cook on the least time, but the pie sounds wonderful!
This is great...good excuse to go buy some whiskey =) I like that you put walnuts on top. Have you ever put them on top of ice cream? Okay, now I'm officially hungry! Happy Turkey Day, Dan! You done good. Again!
Now Scott, always eat your Whiskey Apples responsibly!
Ha I'm going to start checking IDs at tHanksgiving dinner!
(In reality, the alcohol content is gone after cooking, leaving only the flavor behind, but what you do with the rest of the bottle is entirely up to you) Provided you are over 21 and a responsible adult, - thats my disclaimer, what do you think?

my guess is that this is non alcoholic being that the alcohol boils off, so its probly fine for children
altoids18ROX 2 years ago
yeah, but anything the apples absorb will not boil off.
which shouldnt be a lot though.

Many microwaves have a timer that just counts down and beeps when it's done, without using the radiation.

Why wash the apples? If You're peeling them .
NYPOLICE 3 years ago
Because, the knife and your hands are coming into contact with the skin AND flesh of the apples. Though you're not eating the peels, if you don't wash them, dirt and pesticides that remain on them can be transferred to the flesh of the fruit by way of your hands or knife.

Why wash the apples? You're peeling them right after, so I don't see the point in washing them first.
