Informing the public does not simply mean telling the truth. At least, that's not how the studies I mentioned - or how I - approach the issue. For example, a study in my own country showed that (on average) people who watch certain news media end up being less informed about the world, indicating that international news was not up to par.
Other studies compare to people who don't watch TV news at all.
