i always though that IS thing is just a big fancy nonsense, but i just tried that out, and it did stabilised the image, i have been using that lens for a year without ever turning on IS......
Thanks for posting this - now I'm sold on getting this lens for video now. Documentary work requires doing some handheld to get interesting shots, and most of the time I'm getting audio from an external source. However - how audible is the IS motor to your "naked ear"?
Another thing you could do to avoid the IS and still hand hold is to use a support frame. This adds mass and inertia, plus also makes it easier to hold. A remote mic would help lots too.
great video. i tried it out myself. and agreed with the two other posters, except using a tripod isn't always ideal. specially if you are following a moving subject. i also learnt that it only recorded video with 4 apertures. "your lowest aperture, f/5.6 f/16 and f/22.
Thanks man! Yes you should use a tripod if you can, but there are plenty of times where you have to go handheld and this proves that the camera lens can do the job quite nicely.
thanks!

@fanaticastype It really depends. I would recommend lights and a fast lens in general.

That's what I needed to appreciate the stabilization and to hear the normal issue of lenses noise. Real life example.
I guess next generation of lenses will be noiseless and the upgrade of the 5D II will be with stereo mic..
Thanks again.

@SergioBlackDolphin I hope so. A built in stereo mic would be nice.

Hello phototristan!
I got my 70-200 F4 L IS zoom lens yesterday!
The image stabilisation of the lens is much better. freehand videos at 200mm (!!!) are no problem.
At 100mm it surely beats the 24-105mm 4l IS, in mode 2 you can pan quickly for sports.
Get it! It´s a great upgrade for your DSLR-System.
I tested the 70-200 L2.8 also, too heavy - and the IS don´t work so great, then the L4 does.
Good Light!

I have never had a lens with IS. i hope to get this lens soon though. As this video shows, it's such a great feature to have within a lens

it's too bad about the warping in the video ..
did canon ever release a firmware update to fix that?
also to hopefully add 24P mode (which is easily implemented.
I'd love to consider getting one of these but not until those two things are done by canon.
