I attented a Roy Burns Clinic. He put me right beside his drums and asked me to close my eyes. He did a roll from slow to very fast. He asked me to guess what it was. It was double stroke but it was so even it had to be a fast single stroke. He then did it again, with my eyes opened, it was a left hand single stroke. His palm was wide open, he only used his thumb. He said it took him an hour a day for 5 years. 35 years later I still can't do it. Thanx for posting and cheers to the master.
I got my drum setup from him back when it was shown in the old Rogers catalogs. It was with the two upper toms mounted slightly to the left with ride cymbal mounted on a holder on the bass. To me this is the ideal setup as you have the advantage of two toms instead of one and the ride in a perfect close comfortable position. Thanks to Roy.
Does anyone have the song Sing Sing Sing by Benny Goodman with Roy Burns on drums?????????? Can't fine mine and no one seems to remember how great that drum solo was.
@thumppurrr , Gene did a great job with that song and was probably "the" drummer that helped make Sing Sing Sing so well known. Benny Goodman played and recorded that song many times in his career, I believe Roy Burns gets the brass ring for his solo!!!
I saw Roy today! Drove out to Aquarian to have him autograph a picture taken of us over 25 years ago for Modern Drummer Magazine! I was taking drum lessons from Roy and the photographer popped in, asking if he could take a picture for the magazine. Spent about 20 minutes talking with Roy. What a thrill. Glad I finally had that picture autographed. And, yes, he's a very underrated drummer! When it comes to all-around gentleman, Roy is in the same league as the magnificent Louie Bellson! Drum on!!
One of the best jazz records I ever heard from ANY drummer was called "Skin Burns; Roy Burns". It had Avalon, Take me out to the Ball Game and other classics on it. I've looked everywhere for a cd of that record. I don't even know what label it was on. Can anybody help me on this? Roy was a fantastic drummer...very influencial on my own playing even though I never knew him. Buddy Rich acknowledged him at one of his Disneyland concerts I went to in the 80's. I was thrilled to see that!
i could never stop listening to,reading and playing along with "one surface learning ". most of those funk beats are still ,too hip for most folks !! brilliant ! i remember living in hollywood and people would be in their cars playing bad heavy metal ! i was always cruising to roy's one surface learning . (not that loud) ! i think my friends were kinda bummed . one guy wanted to be a writer and my girlfriend loved hanoi, the dog's , suicide twins..etc.. she would say "play excercise 47 example 4.
Those are some mighty quick and slick doubles with the left hand. He could always do more with his left than a lot of tubbsman could with 4 appendages! Highly underrated in his career.
I attended a drum clinic Mr Burns gave at Whiting auditorium in Flint Michigan in 1983. My drum instructor Bill Shaffer supplied the hardware. The event was quite inspiring.

Roy gave the best clinics. He gave great detail on stick technique, how to practice the rudiments and breathing. Learned a lot from him. A great man.

He's not underrated...he's just not as well known as most great drummers. Among his peers though...they know he's as good as it gets.

Roy Burns is an amazing man. I talked to him on the phone about a drumhead of mine and his customer service is amazing. What a great man and drummer!
