Here there is no fault of the pilot. For not performance of the order - he could be executed. The convergence of circumstances has occurred. In this space there was also an American scout plane RC-135. The Soviet command those years very much was nervous and without understanding, what and which is the plane, have given the order.
I ask all of you commentators to take a min and think about this:
SHOULD THE GOD DAMN BLOODY WAR EVER BE AN EXCUSE FOR KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE? !
THE PILOT COULD'VE HAVE MADE RADIO CONTACT ! THINK ABOUT THIS, HOW HARD IT IS TO CALL THE CIVILIAN AIRLINE AND CONFIRM???
I SAY THIS IS NO ACCIDENT, I SAY THERE ARE A SHITLOAD OF PEOPLE THAT'S RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS, INCLUDING THE GOD DAMN COMMIE UNION AND UNITED STATES THAT INSTIGATED THE GOD DAMN COLD WAR !
A US warship shot down an Iranian Airline because it flew into a war zone. The US tried making radio contact but Military and Civilian aricrafts use different radio frequencies. The only thing that set US differetn than Soviet Union is that we held our share of the mistake, internationally apologized and compensated the Iranian people for their loses. Soviet Union just kept it a secret and did not apologize or compensate the families.
Another TRAGEDY that could have been prevented. Human Error was the cause. But I also think credit HAS to be given to our former Cold War adversaries, The Soviet.............
A U.S. Air Force AWACS plane is NOT a "fighter" or "bomber." It's UNARMED ! Everyone KNOWS that, even "civilians."
How much of an "inconvenience" would it have been for that Soviet pilot to get a definite VISUAL on the "target" ?
Even in Vietnam (a proper declared shooting war) US F-4 fighter pilots were required to get positive visual i.d. of a target before engaging.
And in the Falklands War we nearly shot down a civilian airliner with a SAM from a ship, but the plane was on a course that suggested it was heading for an airport somewhere, and that was enough for us to cancel the attack, even though we knew the Argentines were spying on us with a 707 (instead we sent a Sea Harrier to intercept and visually check).
@Solidboat123 look up iran air flight 655, a US ship shot down a passenger jetliner that have just took off from airport by mistake, no visual ID were used, they only tried to contact the plane through military frequency (which the plane can't hear). jumpy and panicking crew can't read their instrument properly even though the display were clear. this is in 1988, they thought an airbus with 290 people onboard climbing steadily upward was a military fighter jet diving downward at them.
@penitent2401 Yeah, I saw that episode. They weren't able to get visual i.d. of the target though. But yes, the radar operator messed up when he said it was diving towards them.
@badgerattoadhall Yeah, I saw an interview someone had with him. I feel sorry for him really, but he should have tried harder. If he'd pulled up alongside he might have seen lights and people in the cabin, and failing that he should have flown in front of the cockpit to make sure the crew had seen him (he said himself that he wasn't sure if his warning shots would be seen since they weren't tracers)
Classic Russian behavior. People fail to realize - historically Russians are sloppy in their operations. While it would be concerning for an aircraft to bust airspace, even in the 80s there were plenty of ways to ID aircraft as friend or foe. The aircraft was never in a time critical location in which the soviets had to immediately shoot it down. This comes down to communist aggression and a classic failure to coverup their mistake. The cold war was not black & white. It was good vs evil.
Just in case that future black boxes cannot be found, airplane carriers should have their conversations recorded and wirelessly via satellite stored in mainframes that can be installed in a air traffic control tower or center to avoid such a grave controversy.
Soviets = Justified killings. Classic moral bankruptcy and denial of basic human rights = why this regime fell. They will go to hell

@badgerattoadhall Well they didn't do it very well, or they'd have id'd it as a civilian airliner

@Solidboat123 he had eye on the plane and saw it was a "boeing type" but to this daay he says it was a converted spy plane

If the gun was loaded with tracer rounds the people inside would have seen the bright shells streaking by them.

i dont know Why the united states is spying on everything.. and interfering in other countries matters
1.they r spying the radio conversation of soviet
2.there r spying all the military and civil planes around the globe with passive radar
and 3.US air rc-135 was spying to hear a soviet missile test

this is bullshit. black boxes keep data only for 30 days not 10 years
mrkhoros 1 year ago
@mrkhoros No no, black boxes only give off location beacons for 30 days. tape can hold data for multiple decades.
