I heard John Fricke one of Judy' s biographers said in the "for me and my gal" dvd commentary that Judy sung with Sammy Davis and the audience applauded all the time during the performance like in the middle of the song and at the end she got a 7minutes standing ovation but probably that was from another time she sung there with him. I love Judy Garland forever she wa the biggest talent of the world and so far there is no one like her. No one can touch her!
In what year was this? I'm pretty sure her voice is like that because she was sick or something because I've seen performances of her in the 67-69 and she sounds amazing. Still you can tell how professional she was and I still think she sounded wonderfully and this one was such a great performance. this video I priceless hope you never take it down. I heard John Fricke one of Judy' s biographers said in the "for me and my gal" dvd commentary that Judy sung with Sammy Davis and the audience appl
I have a different opinion from some others about Judy's appearance. While it is pales in comparison to the excellence she attains in other performances, it's a testament to her reputation as the master entertainer. Even fighting laryngitis, other entertainers fall short of her magic.
I can't believe I'm about to say this, but, even being one of the world's most ardent Judy admirers, this moment upsets me. Judy is very trashed, and it makes me a little uncomfortable. Sammy, as always, is on top of his game and in peak form. Love Judy forever, but this is tough for me to watch. Having said that, halfway through she almost seems to remember what she's capable of and nearly snaps back and delivers like no-one else can!
Judy's voice was very raspy here. I wonder if her heavy drinking was taking a toll on it. She still puts the songs across in her own amazing style. Sammy is sensational. I saw him perform on stage live back in the early 1980's. No other performer that I saw live ever put on a Show that could not be beat. "Smile" by Judy reminds of Jermaine singing at Michael's memorial service. So many songs were song here.... I love Judy's Swanee. She always pulls off her performances. The two are GREAT
it only had to do with the benzadrine that Judy was taking. If she didn't take it, her voice was glorious. If she did take it, her voice tended to be raspy. I've taken Dex myself and know how much it dries out the throat
@damone77 David- Thank you for clearing that up for me. I had no idea what she was on besides drinking heavily. Symbacort inhaler makes my voice go from a tenor to a baritone bass and I totally lose my upper range, so I am aware of inhalers. My question is whether she was using it as only an inhaler or if she cracked open the container and ate the strip in there to get high.
@HandwhistlerBen Actually, you are right about Judy's drinking heavily. That she only sipped Blue Nun occasionally and what was seen was her glass of ice cubes is a long cultivated myth. Also, she was not exactly a stranger to heroin, another thing her fans prefer not knowing because you can't blame MGM for that. Still and all, her voice was for the most part rich and clear until 1967. There's plenty of it left in the 1966 Hollywood Palace youtube clip.
@HandwhistlerBen hi sorry to take so long in replying. No, the benzadrine was in pill form. To my knowledge benzadrine is on longer available however Dex is still widely prescribed by Dr. Feelgoods.
Judy was the Greatest Entertainer of the 20th Century. Her talent cannot even be overshadowed 40 yrs after her death. She gave her all and when a singer who sings with such Gusto cannot always be in great voice. God Bless you Judy.
@NFitalianGuy Loved Judy but no one was greater than Sammy Davis...singer, dancer, impressionist, actor, musician extraordinaire. So much talent packed in one small frame.
She looks great and appears strong and in command of her talent, even if she is in poor voice. She seemed to go through a very rapid decline after this period, judging by the various postings of the 67-68 tv appearances.
Judy made her experience and know-how pay to the maximum degree here - obviously ailing from a sore throat, nonetheless, she prevailed in that marvelous Garland tradition. She had been at it (on stage) since the age of two, and had learned much - a lot of it in evidence right here. Brava!
right at 9:05 the song sums up her career to a tee. gives me a chill. Like she is actually telling everyone she has given her life to please her fans. I love you France Ethel Gumm! I am quite sure your beloved Papa was proud of you watching you from heaven. I often wonder how her life would have turned out if her father lived. She needed his protection. When he died she was quoted as saying " Now, there is no one on my side". I get choked up, sorry guys. Judy u r the best!
Judy made two appearances on the Sammy Davis Jr . Show one week after another, and that was after she had appeared on a Perry Como Special the week before. Do you know if this was the first appearance or the second? She did a medley with Sammy on both shows but I seem to remember they did more of their famous hits on the first one. Buz Kohan
they are actually starting to issue these on DVD finally. It would be great to see this full blown color as it aired! They did another melody on this same show. But i can't find it on youtube anymore
Good exmaple of how Judy's great sense of showmanship, time and vaudevillian experience served her well when she was hoarse. Fighting a cold after being in Fla. at the Diplomoat Hotel in 2/66 (where she was in magnficient voice)she nevertheless came through. Sammy was right in there at her side if she needed "support". Two master showmen at their best!
Would have been great if they could have postponed Judy's appearance until she shook off whatever cold or flu bug she had, because she was still quite good in 1966.
Judy the best ... singer actress dancer entertainer.... anyone like her! Davis Garland wonderful couple!

Actually, this is the first appearance which was aired March 18, 1966.
The second appearance aired March 25, and began with "A Couple of Swells" and "The Lady Is A Tramp".
