Uhm He did make it big and is still doing concerts and selling them out! He is fantastic live!! Went to the "Limelight" tour concert in Calgary and he did 5 encores!
@Kocis19 Strangely enough, that's not a steel guitar. It's a resonator guitar - probably a National Steel - which is why I say strangely. A steel guitar sits on legs like a table top and would go nicely with Colin's boots. For what it's worth, they are tuned differently, played differently and make different sound.
Can anyone spell Dobro? Played the same as an acoustic or with a glass or brass tube in conjunction or instead of the fingers...very versatile...I have an electric/acoustic...Nuff said...or Google, LOL.
@zipup99 Well, not to put too sharp a point on it, but it isn't a dobro either. Dobro's a typically square necked wooden body with a resonator. The strings will be raised. The thing Colin James is playing is chrome plated brass, round neck with fretable strings.
@soin2top Why even bother to make a rebuttal without backing up your statement? I can totally agree with someone who makes a valid "point", but don't just say something is, just because of your opinion. Would you care for page references? DOBRO's can be made of wood or fricken' plastic, not just metal...the resonator does the work. I could have bought one like his...it was just too gaudy, LOL...and it was listed as a Dobro in the instrument catalogue.
@soin2top You do get points for Gibson owning the rights to the Dobro name...but as to Dobro not being a descriptive term for that type of acoustic guitar...try checking a few sites: When Gibson informed other dobro guitar makers of its intention to reserve exclusive rights to the Dobro name, some players began to refer to their instruments as TIFKAD guitars, meaning "The Instrument Formerly Known As Dobro". ://folkmusic.about.com/od/glossary/g/Dobro.htm
@soin2top As for a brand name being used as "a descriptive term" for a generic product...I guess you never went into a store and asked for Aspirin made by Bayer...when you really wanted the cheaper, generic acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) product? Look up Wikipedia for Dobro and they mention Gibson and the original manufacturers. I'm sure all the 4 wheelin' guys out there have to be told to stop calling their rigs "Jeeps", because Chrysler owns it. They bought it from AMC...who got it from Willy's

@adrian719 the intro is a cover of "Stones in my passway" by robert johnson. I think it's the best cover of the song I have heard, even better than clapton's. It's masterful and soulful imo.
