You know, I was born in Czech Republic and I have to tell you something: I've tasted and drunk many, many beers by travelling across Europe. But I've never... Never EVER tasted so delicious beer as Pilsner Urquell is. This czech-made product is one of things, that I'm very proud of due to my country. Czech beers generally are very tasty, but this one is delicious as hell. In my opinion, this is the best beer in the world. I wonder if somebody shows me better.

Greetings from Prague!!! You are right, this is one of the best beers in the world. I tasted many and so much of abroad beers taste like they are week piss or so. Plzeň have in my opinion very strong hops taste and smell. Its heavy and i honestly can take only few of them, 6-8 and then im loosing taste for another one. I just have to say that taste of Plzeň and taste of good skunk/weed goes great together :-)))

I first caught onto this beer in 1987 and it has been my first choice ever since then. I have always tried to order it in bars or find it in beer and liquor stores and it can be hard to find in Canada. "We don't have that" was usually heard.
Well, since it is so popular and well known, it is slowly turning to a mainstream. Quality goes on the bill of quantity, so they can export more beer which takes less time to master.
This little bottle is about one third of what the Urquell can offer. Another third is the taste, when it is properly tapped with proper equipment. And the last third is sometimes revealed to czechs, when they do some quantity limited non export old-technology brew for special occasions. Oh the heavens....
go to see that you're not beer drinkers, because if you were, you'd know that the way they drink beer, ruining its original flavor ... Beer has a tongue slip directly into your throat that you touch only a few taste buds, if you like it to in your mouth, you never know the real taste ... Otherwise, I am Czech and I must say that Pilsen has ruined a lot lately, it's only a controversial brand and that's all. I prefer mini-brewers such as HOLBA, Svijany and so on ...

You understand it wrong, I do not want to offend you somehow, or so I'm glad that something like this exists because of beer, you assess what is often a normal person gets into the hands ... he want to do something similar with breweries in the CR, then abroad, and make a short story about them, and I know what's up with that work and how much it costs money.

No, Maklar2010, You must go to Pilsen, Czech republic... Pilsen is cca 80 km west from Prague (good highway Prague-Pilsen D5) and there taste that in original brewery restaurant "Na Spilce". The best beer of the world!!! I know it very well and I am pleasure that I live here.. Welcome in Pilsen!!!

Just an advise how to get 100% of it. You have to serve it up correctly. Take a beer mug - a pint, it has to be washed up perfectly and cooled (so the beer should :) ). Hold the mug in a 45° angle and start filling it, full stream, so that the beer stremas down the glass. Enjoy :)

The best way to taste the Pilsner Urquell is on a tap from tank. (You have to go to the Czech Republic to get this.) The Pilsner from tank is not pasteurized so it is really live beer. Much better than bottled one.
Urquell can be translated from German to English as ultimateness, spring, aboriginal or fountain-head. The Original Czech name is Plzensky Prazdroj in German - Pilsner Urquell

I was in november in Prag,and I tasted Budweiser Budwar,Pilsner Urquell,Kruševice and some other...labeled as Kozel.Firs i tries a bottle of Budweiser,wher our bus stopped and Petrol station,bottle was 35Kč I think.I was excellent introduction to me.But,when I taste the Pilsner that beer became my choice.Greetings from Serbia.

Hey, yeah I agree with you, but for me personally, pilsner urquell is a beer I have to get used to, I still enjoy it! But it takes a while for me to adjust to the taste, i prefer staropramen :-D
My other favourite czech beer is staropramen, you guys should check it out if you don't like pilsner, some people don't like pilsner, it's an aquired taste
Hello Skinnyhurley. Yes! Staropramen is VERY GOOD. Pity we do not have it this side of the world! one thing though, I somewhat disagree with you when you say pilsner style is an acquired taste. It probably the most natural taste out of all styles of beer. Acquired taste examples are mostly ales expecially some weird Belgian ales to Rauchbier to even a PA/ IPA to many drinkers. Many would argue that a dry Irish stout can also be an acquired taste...
I live in Minneapolis and I can get even Staropramen at at least one store. I think you have to look in the more upscale shops. But when you can get Pilsner Urquel, why bother?!

@dinomak1970: You can find it at Syrdyk's (not too sure of the spelling) Liquors near the University on 4th St. in Minneapolis. It's by far the best liquor store in the whole Twin Cities, ESPECIALLY if you like to try new beers. I'm Bohemian too, by the way.

Please don't hate me, but I got some P Urquell this past weekend and although I loved it, I didn't find it much different from Heineken (which most beer tasters hate). Personally I like Heineken a little better. The taste to me was very similar but P Urquell had a bit of a lingering after-taste. I'd say P Urquell is like a (very) SLIGHTLY more concentrated Heineken that is a little more expensive and harder to find than Heineken. P Urquell is great though. Heineken is still better to me though.
What would I hate you for the slightest reason? You have 100% right to voice your opinion! Do this exercise: Taste these 4 beers side by side: Pilsner Urquell, Budweiser Budvar (Original Budvar), Heineken and Grolsch. There are no rights or wrongs as to which is better. They are similar but they are different. The Heineken we have in bottle format is very different than the real fresh Heineken I had in Amsterdam. Likewise, the P Urquell I had in Pargue tasted much better than fm a bottle.

I have to say (and not kidding around...), life is tolerable beacuse you can go to one of those pubs where draught the pilsner urguel from a tanks (huge storage tanks for thousands litres fulled straight from cisterns from the brewery) and enjoy that sensation which i feel only when i drink realy good-class sparkling wine or champaign. And... Times between two visits those places is the only grey padding. ... Well, the next dew can is waiting, i have some obligation yet to do.
What would you say are some of the other best Pilsners? I have tried Budvar and it is not near as good as the Urquell. I am in Indiana USA and the Urquell is about as good as it gets for pilsner that I can find. There are a ton of micro brewerys in the USA, but hardly any of them know what they are doing it seems, at least when it comes to pilsners. Although I did finally find a decent microbrew ale by the Mendicino Brewing Co. last week. It's slim pickins for good brews...
I totally agree about the microbreweries and them failing at pilsners. Everything they make tastes like a pale ale to me. they dont have that bite like urquell, heineken, becks etc do. Basically i stick to this beer as pilsner beer is infact my favorite and this is the best i've had.
I also love Pilsner Urquell (only, Budvar sucks and I'm half Czech ;-) ), but you shoud try Belgian Leffe blond, it is ale - bottom fermented beer, I'm sure you already either heard or drank that or both, that's nevermind I miss your review at this specifi beer..so maybe next review'll be Leffe blond..cheers!

Why do you say that? I guess becasue I use a wine glass. Glasses of this shape bring out the beer much better than most beer vessels. Take a look at some of the previous comments. There is a difference between tasting and drinking beer...
I'm sure you get this question all the time... why do your videos cut off at 3:00? If it's not a problem with the camera itself, I should be able to coach you on overcoming that issue. Also, are you planning on doing any more reviews? Have you reviewed any Unibroue beers? Have you tried anything from Bells Brewery in Michigan? I recommend the Two-Hearted Ale or the Winter White.
My camera only allows me to tape a simple video up to 3 minutes. Frankly, I would like to restrict my videos not longer than 5 mins as anything longer means my viewers might get bored looking at a guy tasting + describing a drink / I am always planning to do more reviews on a regular basis but I need to find time / I have tasted most Unibroue beers. Most of them are excellent but I have NOT done any reviews. / No I have not tasted anything from Bells. I will see if I can get samples...THANKS
Czech beer is GREAT and in my humble opinion, one of the bests but they do have very limited styles. For bottom fermenting styles (ale), they are definitely limited when compare to the UK, Belgium. It all depends on what you like and when you like a brew. I love a crisp and clean pilsner during hot summer days but in cold dark winters, a heavy ale is definitely for me a winter warmer. Czech beer really is the best. Nearly 1000 years of brewing experience...Wow American wasn't even discovered at that time. Budvar or Pilsner Urquell truly are the greatest beer in the world.

I did! Draft fresh Pilsner Urquell and pilsner style I had from Prague were simply amazing. I like other styles too such as a BIG BOLD lavishly hopped West Coast IPA (Indian Pale Ale) or even stronger, Imperial IPA. I also like old fashion unspiced barley wines. Check out Rogue brewery from Oregon! They make fantastic beers!
Can you advise me a good and not to expensive pub or beer garden in Plzen? I'm going to visit Plzen for a day in this summer to taste your excellent beer!

A couple of comments: I love Budvar on tap. The beer is lighter, slightly cleaner, less hoppy, more flowery and these characters shows BIG time when being poured fresh from tap! As much as I like these styles, I also like very strong bottom fermenting ales that are aged appropriately - the opposite spectrum! I was told by separate Czech friends that many Czech do not know / understand beer styles from many corners of the world. I encourage you very much to do some research. Happy tasting!
What language is "Pilsner Urquell" ? German Where was it founded? In Germany (Plzeň was German at that time) Who invented it? Josef Groll (he was german) . . . Its still brewed in Plzeň. But this city became more than 100 years after it was invented Czech- But this doesnt chnge the fact, that this beer is a german beer ;) ..... Yeah, I am " kidding" ;)
Now you need to taste Kaldi from Iceland. It is brewed according to Czech tradition from 1842 and the brew master is a Czech. The ingredients are Saaz hop, Czech malt and Icelandic spring water.

Hele, ale Gambrinus je plzeň stejně jako urquel. Jsou to dva produkty jedný firmy. ..a vždycky byli.. ale dobrej je Gambrinus 10° (byl snad vždycky uváděný jako výborný konzumní hospodský pivo). Ale teď se přikláním spíš ke Gambrinus Excelent a Gambrinus Premium.. (G. 11° a 12°) Je to třída. Každopádně mi Plzeňský pivko chutná nejen proto že jsem se v Plzni narodil. :)
Taky možná se za tu doby vystřídalo mnoho sládků, záleží na vodě v ten rok, záleží na tom jaká je úroda ječmenu, jak se uvaří slad.. je tam spousta faktorů, který nesmíme opomenout. Samozdřejmě bych rád zdůraznil, že pivo chutná nejlépe u zdroje a hlavně točené. Přepravou může pivo utrpět ztrátu kvality a znehodnocení. Také plnění do láhví není zrovna ideální pro konzumenta.. A je nutné a podávat ho správně vychlazené. :)
To je americkej asiat (asi), ale Peace. =) Náhodou je to docela v klidu.. A jestli se vyznam? Nevyznam se, napsal sem nějaký žvásty jenom tak, asi.. :D

Urquell can be translated from German to English as ultimateness, spring, aboriginal or fountain-head. The Original Czech name is Plzensky Prazdroj in German - Pilsner Urquell

I was in november in Prag,and I tasted Budweiser Budwar,Pilsner Urquell,Kruševice and some other...labeled as Kozel.Firs i tries a bottle of Budweiser,wher our bus stopped and Petrol station,bottle was 35Kč I think.I was excellent introduction to me.But,when I taste the Pilsner that beer became my choice.Greetings from Serbia.

I was served this when I ordered a pils in Paris. Holy cow this was awesome! Best tasting beer I had while I was in Europe (Germany, France, NL, Belgium, CH).
This beer really stands out. Get some if you can.

Hey, yeah I agree with you, but for me personally, pilsner urquell is a beer I have to get used to, I still enjoy it! But it takes a while for me to adjust to the taste, i prefer staropramen :-D

Hello Skinnyhurley. Yes! Staropramen is VERY GOOD. Pity we do not have it this side of the world! one thing though, I somewhat disagree with you when you say pilsner style is an acquired taste. It probably the most natural taste out of all styles of beer. Acquired taste examples are mostly ales expecially some weird Belgian ales to Rauchbier to even a PA/ IPA to many drinkers. Many would argue that a dry Irish stout can also be an acquired taste...

@dinomak1970: You can find it at Syrdyk's (not too sure of the spelling) Liquors near the University on 4th St. in Minneapolis. It's by far the best liquor store in the whole Twin Cities, ESPECIALLY if you like to try new beers. I'm Bohemian too, by the way.

Please don't hate me, but I got some P Urquell this past weekend and although I loved it, I didn't find it much different from Heineken (which most beer tasters hate). Personally I like Heineken a little better. The taste to me was very similar but P Urquell had a bit of a lingering after-taste. I'd say P Urquell is like a (very) SLIGHTLY more concentrated Heineken that is a little more expensive and harder to find than Heineken. P Urquell is great though. Heineken is still better to me though.

What would I hate you for the slightest reason? You have 100% right to voice your opinion! Do this exercise: Taste these 4 beers side by side: Pilsner Urquell, Budweiser Budvar (Original Budvar), Heineken and Grolsch. There are no rights or wrongs as to which is better. They are similar but they are different. The Heineken we have in bottle format is very different than the real fresh Heineken I had in Amsterdam. Likewise, the P Urquell I had in Pargue tasted much better than fm a bottle.

I have to say (and not kidding around...), life is tolerable beacuse you can go to one of those pubs where draught the pilsner urguel from a tanks (huge storage tanks for thousands litres fulled straight from cisterns from the brewery) and enjoy that sensation which i feel only when i drink realy good-class sparkling wine or champaign. And... Times between two visits those places is the only grey padding. ... Well, the next dew can is waiting, i have some obligation yet to do.

What would you say are some of the other best Pilsners? I have tried Budvar and it is not near as good as the Urquell. I am in Indiana USA and the Urquell is about as good as it gets for pilsner that I can find. There are a ton of micro brewerys in the USA, but hardly any of them know what they are doing it seems, at least when it comes to pilsners. Although I did finally find a decent microbrew ale by the Mendicino Brewing Co. last week. It's slim pickins for good brews...

I totally agree about the microbreweries and them failing at pilsners. Everything they make tastes like a pale ale to me. they dont have that bite like urquell, heineken, becks etc do. Basically i stick to this beer as pilsner beer is infact my favorite and this is the best i've had.

I also love Pilsner Urquell (only, Budvar sucks and I'm half Czech ;-) ), but you shoud try Belgian Leffe blond, it is ale - bottom fermented beer, I'm sure you already either heard or drank that or both, that's nevermind I miss your review at this specifi beer..so maybe next review'll be Leffe blond..cheers!

Why do you say that? I guess becasue I use a wine glass. Glasses of this shape bring out the beer much better than most beer vessels. Take a look at some of the previous comments. There is a difference between tasting and drinking beer...

I'm sure you get this question all the time... why do your videos cut off at 3:00? If it's not a problem with the camera itself, I should be able to coach you on overcoming that issue. Also, are you planning on doing any more reviews? Have you reviewed any Unibroue beers? Have you tried anything from Bells Brewery in Michigan? I recommend the Two-Hearted Ale or the Winter White.

My camera only allows me to tape a simple video up to 3 minutes. Frankly, I would like to restrict my videos not longer than 5 mins as anything longer means my viewers might get bored looking at a guy tasting + describing a drink / I am always planning to do more reviews on a regular basis but I need to find time / I have tasted most Unibroue beers. Most of them are excellent but I have NOT done any reviews. / No I have not tasted anything from Bells. I will see if I can get samples...THANKS

Czech beer is GREAT and in my humble opinion, one of the bests but they do have very limited styles. For bottom fermenting styles (ale), they are definitely limited when compare to the UK, Belgium. It all depends on what you like and when you like a brew. I love a crisp and clean pilsner during hot summer days but in cold dark winters, a heavy ale is definitely for me a winter warmer. I think that it's incredibly funny that i typed in 'beer tasting' and this was like one of the first one's i saw.....and i just bought a six pack of it. It's been almost 2 years since i've had this beer, and i drank it when you did, crazy . WONERFUL beer!!!!

I did! Draft fresh Pilsner Urquell and pilsner style I had from Prague were simply amazing. I like other styles too such as a BIG BOLD lavishly hopped West Coast IPA (Indian Pale Ale) or even stronger, Imperial IPA. I also like old fashion unspiced barley wines. Check out Rogue brewery from Oregon! They make fantastic beers!

A couple of comments: I love Budvar on tap. The beer is lighter, slightly cleaner, less hoppy, more flowery and these characters shows BIG time when being poured fresh from tap! As much as I like these styles, I also like very strong bottom fermenting ales that are aged appropriately - the opposite spectrum! I was told by separate Czech friends that many Czech do not know / understand beer styles from many corners of the world. I encourage you very much to do some research. Happy tasting!

Now you need to taste Kaldi from Iceland. It is brewed according to Czech tradition from 1842 and the brew master is a Czech. The ingredients are Saaz hop, Czech malt and Icelandic spring water.
According to my taste it beats the Urquell.

Hele, ale Gambrinus je plzeň stejně jako urquel. Jsou to dva produkty jedný firmy. ..a vždycky byli.. ale dobrej je Gambrinus 10° (byl snad vždycky uváděný jako výborný konzumní hospodský pivo). Ale teď se přikláním spíš ke Gambrinus Excelent a Gambrinus Premium.. (G. 11° a 12°) Je to třída. Každopádně mi Plzeňský pivko chutná nejen proto že jsem se v Plzni narodil. :)

Taky možná se za tu doby vystřídalo mnoho sládků, záleží na vodě v ten rok, záleží na tom jaká je úroda ječmenu, jak se uvaří slad.. je tam spousta faktorů, který nesmíme opomenout. Samozdřejmě bych rád zdůraznil, že pivo chutná nejlépe u zdroje a hlavně točené. Přepravou může pivo utrpět ztrátu kvality a znehodnocení. Také plnění do láhví není zrovna ideální pro konzumenta.. A je nutné a podávat ho správně vychlazené. :)

I hope you'll be able to try the new GAMBRINUS EXCELLENT. It's 11° beer from Pilsen too.. I live in Pilsen and I have tried it.. Awesome..
And another thing: The Pilsen beer from a bottle won't be as good as the unpasteurized one in the pub =o)
