My first car was a ford escort mexico so of course I found about Ari. What a great reminder of his driving. And the funny thing is I used to watch those last few seconds of this video over and over laughing at how the hell he made it through the gates, doesn't the co-driver say 'good god' or something? :-)

Vatanen has been my favorite driver since early 80's when i was just a little boy and watching small local finnish rally called "itä ralli", Vatanen won that race with Opel Manta, if i remember correctly.

No serious, Ari is an exceptional driver. He was on a rush in the mid-eightees, but his unfortunant accident in '85 made him a different driver (not as a person). Of course, you can't ignore his wins in Dakar and Pike's Peak. I remember his Neste Rally Finland guest appearance in 2003. That was the good old Vatanen again.

Actually, the scene were he moves his thumb up is Vatanen in the 405, but you're right. Some 405 footage would have been good, but you have to make choises. His prime career was before 1986, so that was my main focus in this video.

Great Video !!! Best rally driver ever. He had a terrible accident with his Peugeot 205 T16 in Cordoba, Argentina, as it's seen in one of the pictures. I remember I was waiting to see him just few milles after the accident.
