Actually, the tattoo is called a mitsu tomoe. It is an abstract shape made up of three commas. It was originally the symbol for a Shinto war god called Hachiman and since then appeared on many samurai family crests. Of course it was used in Naruto as both Orochimarus curse mark AND Sharingan...
