I found this video because this song came up on my Pandora radio thing, and I was in the mood for hearing it, and just watching this, I can't help but smile. This makes me proud to be an American and living in a country that can support the quality of arts that we experience in this country. Bernadette Peters is definitely an American Treasure. We are so blessed.
I just want to say that I love Bernadette Peters, I love this song. I HATE this arrangement of this song. Bernadette is FINE, the Orchestra needs to PIPE DOWN.
great emotion behind her words.. but the orchestration is sooo cheesy. and the few cents sharp on the 'aliiiiiive' at 1:40 turns me off. great interpretation though =)
@MrMusicstone Its not so much about the vocals as a performer as it is what range of emotion can you put behind the words of the song you are singing. she has a unique vocal styling wonderful intonation and an outstanding ability to snap from emotion to emotion. that is brilliant acting and brilliant performing.
@MrMusicstone don't get me wrong it really comes down to personal opinion and i love me som Lupone but i love the emotional compacity and energy she has to channel her emotion. as a performer that is one of the hardest things to do. her voice may seem average to alot of people but for those who look deeper than just a voice they know why it is they love her =) but you are totally entitled to your opinion and your own tastes. =)

Peters has managed to build a career on her unique pixie girl looks and big bazoombas; her voice was never anything special as this performance proves.
@boynamedalexxx I like me some Bernie; I never said I didn't. I was merely making a point that I think she's limited as a vocalist. I don't know; maybe I just can't get past that infamous nightmarish performance on the old Carol Burnett Show years ago. I guess first impressions are hard to change.
@mikesterSTLMO He loves Barbra, but Barbra isn't as adept at interpreting his material. Peters is the real deal; she's his muse. He's prasied her more than anyone else who's ever done any of his shows.
@mikesterSTLMO Uhh, what? Sondheim is notoriously snippy and will gladly disparage when he wants to. Read his book, Finishing the Hat, and watch him rip through classic musicals and discuss why some of his productions failed. The man says something and he means it.
Love Berney to death, and she acts this song supremely, but she kinda kills the big pivotal note at the end. This was written for a man, after all. Key's to high for her.
People that moan read; Sondheim himselve describes Bernadette Peters as flawless she has fantastic talent and the way she can act so beautifully whilst having outstanding vocals and such moving emotion is incredible. Yes the arrangement is different but it still dosn't alter how fantastic this performance is she hasn't made it cheesy shes captured the essence and emotion of the song perfectly as she always does. Don't compare her & Lupone as their 2 very different performers!
I always thought she was so beautiful. I remember being a little girl, and seeing her in a few things in the 70's and liking her style. She sounds great. I often wondered why she didn't make it "really" big, not that she has to, it was probably better in the long run anyway, but she could have I'm sure.
Back then her vocals were still pretty clear. I saw her a few years ago, she's still a phenomenal actress but in Gypsy her vocals have lost all their power, it's just brassy and thin and hoarse. I don't think her vocals even at their best could compare to Patti's. Patti may not be the most sincere actress but the power and fullness of her vocals are still admirable even today.
Good to see people still appreciate theatre and "real artists" who perform on stage LIVE!! Anybody can do a million "takes" but on stage there are no do-overs it's so much more orchestrated and yet passionate at the same time.
@KaraokeKid22 You should really check your dates before you check someone elses. This was from her Concert From Royal Festival Hall London in 1998. She began her run in Gypsy in 2003, 5 years later. This was recorded 12 years ago. In the time between this and her Tony award performance there was for me a noticeable difference in the quality and clarity of her voice so... you got anything else?
@TBon3Supl3x Wow, ok. No I don't have anything else. I even said that " I Believe..." meaning I think. I'm only on here because I love her and I'm here to watch her, I'm sorry if I offended you. bye
@TBon3Supl3x I saw her twice in "A Little Night Music" in 2010, and her voice was absolutely gorgeous. It was strong, clear and beautiful. And her abilities to deliver Sondheim's lyrics continue to amaze. She's not known as the premier Sondheim interpreter for nothing.
@TBon3Supl3x Watch Patti's latest performances. She's beginning to lose it. I love her a lot, since she's awesome, but she's pushing it. Watch her; you can tell. She's becoming more and more reliant on jawline vibrato and yelling to produce her signature belt. Patti's great, but she shouldn't push it like that.
Bernadette's voice fluctuates; like Patti, it's bound to with age. But, both times I saw Bernadette in "ALNM", her voice was fantastic.
she's really fantastic, she's going over 100% stretching hear voice a little too much, her voice sounds a bit stretched too much. bernadette, please be careful!
A brilliant, moving, and emotionally complex song, one that is simultaneously the finale and turning point of one of the best of all musicals, now done as a feel-good anthem complete with lyric changes to add to the upliftiness. Given that it's Bernadette Peters I guess Sondheim approved, but... yech.
Okay. The singing was great and all. She's good. So why do I hate it so much? Because I'm not a singer who acts. I'm an actor who sings. This song is not meant to be what this arrangement is. It's a personal struggle, not a cheesy Broadway ballad. I think that if Bobby could comment on this, he would feel like his emotions are being spat upon.
@blithium Bernadette Peters is neither an actress who sings, nor a singer who acts. She acts and sings at the same time. Those aren't my words, their Sondheim's. She's considered the premier Sondheim interpreter working. He himself has called her "flawless." This may not be the intended arrangement (Yeah, I've seen "Company"), however, this is a CONCERT performance and it's a beautiful one.
@boynamedalexxx And once again I come off as a pretentious douchebag. I'm always too strong in my opinions. Forgive me.
What I'm trying to say is that when I hear a song from a musical, I can only think of the character and what it means to them, so I dislike concert performances in general. This particular arrangement is just too happy. Sondheim may love it, but I doubt Bobby would. Does that make sense?
@blithium Sure it does. Recently, they did "Rose's Turn" on "Glee." It happened that my least favorite character was singing it. And they absolutely butchered it. Yet all "Glee" fans loved it since they thought it was just a fun, diva-moment number. I'm a huge "GYPSY" fan & was just disgusted what they did with it. I'm usually ok with songs being done out of context or whatever, but "Rose's Turn" shouldn't even be attempted.
@boynamedalexxx Anyway, basically, yeah I see what you're saying...lol. I definitely found "Being Alive" very moving in "Company" yet I love this as well (mostly due to the fact that I LOVE Bernadette too much for words). But yes, I get that, once you see a show, and experience the song within it, it's hard to see the song done any other way.
@LivingInArt I know you've probably long forgotten about this, but I felt I should let you know that this arrangement starts in B-flat, then shifts to B-natural during the bridge. In case you were still wondering. Which you probably weren't. But there ya have it, anyways.
@Laceydog i am huge Lupone fan and i have to agree. While Lupone does have a great voice bernadette's is better. also i feel that lupone is beginning to rest on her name while peters is still looking for better projects and challanging her self.
its fasinating to go through each one and see what they bring to it i think that patti lupone the best female singing it and raul esparza the best male singing what do you think?
@kikay2493 I agree. I love LuPone more than chocolate, but Bernadette definitely corners the market on this song in my opinion. Her raw vocal quality just sends the song to where it needs to be. Raw, unsophisticated, and beautiful. So accessible.
I'm still reeling from the amazingness of the Tony performance for the Company Revival (the Revival Bobby sang this), so I would say it doesn't feel....right? I think it might just be that I prefer a guy singing it...it seems like there's more of a powerful emotion that way.....BUT I LOVE BERNADETTE, DON'T GET ME WRONG!! She's amazing at everything!!!! (ESPECIALLY SONDHEIM, COUGHCOUGH)
Bernadette out of her depth? Singing a Sondheim song? Can you tell us where exactly you think she is out of her depth in this performance? Her phrasing is even better than in the version they recorded for the album...
Oh my gosh! this is so spectacular! I have never heard it sung with so much power and with so much emotion and feeling. I don't quite understand the flash dance moves she's got going on near the end, but who cares? Bravo Ms. Peters. You blow any man out of the water.
Bernadette's emotional interpretation here is absolutely beautiful; she really ACTS the song. But as far as sheer vocal brilliance goes, Patti LuPone knocks this one out of the park.
Yeah I just heard about patti or really just payed attention to her not until sweeny todd the new one she is good to but I can just die for Bernadette if you know what I mean.
idk why but she sang this song with the most emotion and y dose the aduinice love it when SHE sings it so much....it has mad feeling in it..was this like right after she got married or somthing
Me too. But it's not like a sad-crying, it's a moving-crying. And after listening to it for so many times, I got over my fear of commitment and started dating again and subsequently fell in love. Thank you, Mr. Sondheim and Ms. Peters.
i ♥ you, bernadette ! BFF = Bernadette Fan Forever !

(ESPECIALLY SONDHEIM, COUGHCOUGH)
carriewhite410 2 years ago
I know, Raul Esparza set the bar so high for any other performers of this song!
WeeSusieJ 2 years ago 2
What you have to realize though is that the revival version is very stripped down music wise. This arrangement is a bit closer to the original score.

i love her too...but people, she barely gets through this one. A bit out of her depth, i hate to say...

I can't even believe how incredible she is. Bernadette is my favourite for ever.

Bernadette's emotional interpretation here is absolutely beautiful; she really ACTS the song. But as far as sheer vocal brilliance goes, Patti LuPone knocks this one out of the park.

Kill the person who arranged this. But great singing!

Oh my gosh, I totally agree. Horrible arrangment. It shouldn't overpower the soloist so much. Plus, it was totally cheasy.

i feel that bernadette's performance is a bit more raw, giving it a bit of vulnerability, that is perfect for this song!

Yeah I just heard about patti or really just payed attention to her not until sweeny todd the new one she is good to but I can just die for Bernadette if you know what I mean.

Patti Lupone and Bernadette are two different voices. I'll tell you this. I love Bernadette Peters just a bit more, but Lupone is fantastic too.

i don't know - i think Patti Lupone can take her on this one. see the Sondheim celebration @ Carnegie Hall

Patti may be better vocally, but in my opinion, Bernadette shows more emotion than anyone...

this song makes me cry.
UveBeenLuPwned123094 3 years ago 4
Me too. But it's not like a sad-crying, it's a moving-crying. And after listening to it for so many times, I got over my fear of commitment and started dating again and subsequently fell in love. Thank you, Mr. Sondheim and Ms. Peters.
