  • i ♥ you, bernadette ! BFF = Bernadette Fan Forever !

  • oh my God

    she looks so young

  • AMAZING

  • This girl can sang!!!!

  • @nilltep2

    actually she's 63 now

    amazingly she looks so young

  • Oh, Company.... my favorite musical, and not just because you happen to mirror my life and the songs are just there... but it just has a whole deeper line to it... About life. And you, Peters, just rock this song hard

  • She looks terrific. Now if only she can sing...

  • @RckyMtnBikez Your kidding right.. please tell me your kidding. She's amazing!!

  • …will this woman ever age? good gracious.

  • @carecare91 I saw her this year, she's like a vampire.

  • Dear EricMChicago, I truly thank you for these videos. I found this video because this song came up on my Pandora radio thing, and I was in the mood for hearing it, and just watching this, I can't help but smile. You can just see how much Bernadette enjoys doing this, and you see how much emotion is in this. Its great! I love her. Soo yeah. Grassyass for uploading this [:

  • This makes me proud to be an American and living in a country that can support the quality of arts that we experience in this country. Bernadette Peters is definitely an American Treasure. We are so blessed.

  • i can't stand the orchestration

  • @manonfire1601 it's like the composer of the love boat theme arranged this.

  • I love this woman. <3 She's so pretty and talented.

  • my musical theatre idol forever

when i finally win my tony after years of hard work and dedication i'll be thinking of bernadette peters

    truly an inspiration

  • Bernadette is a goddess. Thats all that needs to be said.

  • Screw the naysayers, Bernadette is amazing beyond words, and this song hits close to home as well, making this performance doubly amazing.

  • I just want to say that I love Bernadette Peters, I love this song. I HATE this arrangement of this song. Bernadette is FINE, the Orchestra needs to PIPE DOWN.

  • I just wanna reach out, hug her and hold her too close!! lol

  • great emotion behind her words.. but the orchestration is sooo cheesy. and the few cents sharp on the 'aliiiiiive' at 1:40 turns me off. great interpretation though =)

  • Sondheim Queen

  • fantastic

  • Bernadette is wonderful! She is just one of those people that can warm your heart through any song :) <3

  • she is terrific

  • best version of this song, EVER. hands down.

  • i dont even think her voice is all that, there are ppl who are so much better... why are u guys all hyped up over her

  • @MrMusicstone Its not so much about the vocals as a performer as it is what range of emotion can you put behind the words of the song you are singing. she has a unique vocal styling wonderful intonation and an outstanding ability to snap from emotion to emotion. that is brilliant acting and brilliant performing.

  • @dramafreak9 I just dont see it...sorry she just seems average performance wise. Shes no where near as great as Lupone

  • @MrMusicstone don't get me wrong it really comes down to personal opinion and i love me som Lupone but i love the emotional compacity and energy she has to channel her emotion. as a performer that is one of the hardest things to do. her voice may seem average to alot of people but for those who look deeper than just a voice they know why it is they love her =) but you are totally entitled to your opinion and your own tastes. =)

  • she's wonderful, but this orchestration cheapens the song imo.

  • Five more days until she's in Jacksonville, FL w/ our JAX Orchestra. Woo Hoo! Super syked!

  • @mikesterSTLMO Riiiight, 'cuz having Stephen Sondheim himself call you "flawless" really doesn't make you anything special.

  • @boynamedalexxx Its to his financial advantage to praise anyone who sings his songs. How else would he profit?

  • @mikesterSTLMO Whatever you say. Obviously, Peters' fanbase and critical adornment speaks for itself.

  • @boynamedalexxx I like me some Bernie; I never said I didn't. I was merely making a point that I think she's limited as a vocalist. I don't know; maybe I just can't get past that infamous nightmarish performance on the old Carol Burnett Show years ago. I guess first impressions are hard to change.

  • @mikesterSTLMO Patti Lupone and many other broadway stars have sang Sondheim... he has never called them "flawless".

  • @BigCockDanny Betcha Stephen is a far bigger fan of Barbra's; in general AND on this song.

  • @mikesterSTLMO He loves Barbra, but Barbra isn't as adept at interpreting his material. Peters is the real deal; she's his muse. He's prasied her more than anyone else who's ever done any of his shows.

  • @mikesterSTLMO Uhh, what? Sondheim is notoriously snippy and will gladly disparage when he wants to. Read his book, Finishing the Hat, and watch him rip through classic musicals and discuss why some of his productions failed. The man says something and he means it.

  • God I love this woman

  • Too much....

  • fantastic

  • Love Berney to death, and she acts this song supremely, but she kinda kills the big pivotal note at the end. This was written for a man, after all. Key's to high for her.

  • what a great song and performance.

  • I don't think anyone sings this like Bernadette.....she is just wonderful!

  • does anyone know what key she's doing this in? it seems too low to be in the original key of F

  • @joseyposey88 It's B flat

  • My favorite version of this song.

  • @rosaf19 mine too:)

  • i know this is irrelevant, but her tata's are HUGE

  • @13jberk Yeah, I actually noticed...

looks like that strapless dress doesn't give her enough, *cough* support.

  • @SpoonsAtMidnight haha dude... you are the man. i love you haha

  • I can't get over how beautiful this is!

  • yowza! i am melting....breathless....what a master vocalist....couldn't imagine a more sublime voice, performance, moment..wow

  • BP made me *understand* this song. No one taps into this song like she does. She OWNS it.

  • god shes just amazing

  • People that moan read; Sondheim himselve describes Bernadette Peters as flawless she has fantastic talent and the way she can act so beautifully whilst having outstanding vocals and such moving emotion is incredible. Yes the arrangement is different but it still dosn't alter how fantastic this performance is she hasn't made it cheesy shes captured the essence and emotion of the song perfectly as she always does. Don't compare her & Lupone as their 2 very different performers!

  • I always thought she was so beautiful. I remember being a little girl, and seeing her in a few things in the 70's and liking her style. She sounds great. I often wondered why she didn't make it "really" big, not that she has to, it was probably better in the long run anyway, but she could have I'm sure.

  • @atlasshrugged2u what? Is this not the greatest musical theatre actress of out time?? - i think so! :)

  • @Chiquitita1994 Yeah right up there with "Patti Lupone" at least don't ya think?

  • @atlasshrugged2u

Back then her vocals were still pretty clear. I saw her a few years ago, she's still a phenomenal actress but in Gypsy her vocals have lost all their power, it's just brassy and thin and hoarse. I don't think her vocals even at their best could compare to Patti's. Patti may not be the most sincere actress but the power and fullness of her vocals are still admirable even today.

  • @TBon3Supl3x Yes I'd have to say I agree :)

Good to see people still appreciate theatre and "real artists" who perform on stage LIVE!! Anybody can do a million "takes" but on stage there are no do-overs it's so much more orchestrated and yet passionate at the same time.

    Nothing like theatre!!

  • @TBon3Supl3x This concert was only like 6 years ago, meaning it was, I believe, one year before or after her run in Gypsy, so...

  • @KaraokeKid22 You should really check your dates before you check someone elses. This was from her Concert From Royal Festival Hall London in 1998. She began her run in Gypsy in 2003, 5 years later. This was recorded 12 years ago. In the time between this and her Tony award performance there was for me a noticeable difference in the quality and clarity of her voice so... you got anything else?

  • @TBon3Supl3x Wow, ok. No I don't have anything else. I even said that " I Believe..." meaning I think. I'm only on here because I love her and I'm here to watch her, I'm sorry if I offended you. bye

  • @TBon3Supl3x I saw her twice in "A Little Night Music" in 2010, and her voice was absolutely gorgeous. It was strong, clear and beautiful. And her abilities to deliver Sondheim's lyrics continue to amaze. She's not known as the premier Sondheim interpreter for nothing.

Can't wait to see her in "Follies".

  • @TBon3Supl3x Watch Patti's latest performances. She's beginning to lose it. I love her a lot, since she's awesome, but she's pushing it. Watch her; you can tell. She's becoming more and more reliant on jawline vibrato and yelling to produce her signature belt. Patti's great, but she shouldn't push it like that.

Bernadette's voice fluctuates; like Patti, it's bound to with age. But, both times I saw Bernadette in "ALNM", her voice was fantastic.

  • she's really fantastic, she's going over 100% stretching hear voice a little too much, her voice sounds a bit stretched too much. bernadette, please be careful!

  • god I love her

  • i love the accomponment

  • What an awful arrangement...

  • A brilliant, moving, and emotionally complex song, one that is simultaneously the finale and turning point of one of the best of all musicals, now done as a feel-good anthem complete with lyric changes to add to the upliftiness. Given that it's Bernadette Peters I guess Sondheim approved, but... yech.

  • she was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC...not that she ever isn't. i have to say i didn't care for the instrumental arrangement though.

  • Love it!!

  • damn girl

  • WOW.

Goosebumps! That was incredible!! One of her best songs, surely! Gotta love the woman.

  • @stakemespike04

and i never really understood the meaning of this song until now. it really speaks to me. sondheim is a genius.

  • WOW!

  • Lovely, I must say!

  • Well, that was a cute attempt at trying to match Patti LuPone. Too bad Patti kills it.

  • Okay. The singing was great and all. She's good. So why do I hate it so much? Because I'm not a singer who acts. I'm an actor who sings. This song is not meant to be what this arrangement is. It's a personal struggle, not a cheesy Broadway ballad. I think that if Bobby could comment on this, he would feel like his emotions are being spat upon.

  • @blithium Bernadette Peters is neither an actress who sings, nor a singer who acts. She acts and sings at the same time. Those aren't my words, their Sondheim's. She's considered the premier Sondheim interpreter working. He himself has called her "flawless." This may not be the intended arrangement (Yeah, I've seen "Company"), however, this is a CONCERT performance and it's a beautiful one.

  • @boynamedalexxx And once again I come off as a pretentious douchebag. I'm always too strong in my opinions. Forgive me.

What I'm trying to say is that when I hear a song from a musical, I can only think of the character and what it means to them, so I dislike concert performances in general. This particular arrangement is just too happy. Sondheim may love it, but I doubt Bobby would. Does that make sense?

  • @blithium Sure it does. Recently, they did "Rose's Turn" on "Glee." It happened that my least favorite character was singing it. And they absolutely butchered it. Yet all "Glee" fans loved it since they thought it was just a fun, diva-moment number. I'm a huge "GYPSY" fan & was just disgusted what they did with it. I'm usually ok with songs being done out of context or whatever, but "Rose's Turn" shouldn't even be attempted.

  • @boynamedalexxx Anyway, basically, yeah I see what you're saying...lol. I definitely found "Being Alive" very moving in "Company" yet I love this as well (mostly due to the fact that I LOVE Bernadette too much for words). But yes, I get that, once you see a show, and experience the song within it, it's hard to see the song done any other way.

  • she gives me chills whenever she sings this song

  • does anyone know what key this is in?

  • @LivingInArt I know you've probably long forgotten about this, but I felt I should let you know that this arrangement starts in B-flat, then shifts to B-natural during the bridge. In case you were still wondering. Which you probably weren't. But there ya have it, anyways.

  • So pretty. She's so, so pretty.

  • Chills- and such wonderful poetry- a song to 'live' by. thanks again.

  • I love this arrangement. It is very breezy up until the key change and then it really takes off. It keeps you in suspense!

  • She is the epitome of perfection. <3

  • this song was made for Bernadette Peters, and she makes this song! amazzzing!!!!

  • I never really care for this song, but after hearing Peters singing it, man, it is a wonderful song! I was really moved. Brava!

  • yes

  • best woman in the entire world

  • Who would've thought she was in her 60's?

  • Amazing, hmm?!

  • what key is this in?

  • she is so cute.

  • her version is my favorite of all the ones that i have heard. and i have heard a lot. god i love Bernadette Peters.

  • OMG! I like her version the best.

  • this rendition from ms peters is pure magic...

  • All I can think of when I hear this song is Debra Messing's rendition on Will & Grace

  • @footballerbjo I totally thought I was alone in thinking that XD

  • @ Braelinmax Haha really so did I :D

  • Bravo!!! Exquisite!

  • lupone is too much really. Bernadette Peters is the QUEEN of Broadway!!!!

  • We all know that Lupones got the chops but Bernadette has got a certain sincerity that I just never feel like Lupone ever really gets through.

  • Nobody even Lapone can match the supreme rendition that Bernadette Peters gives this song. Nobody!

  • @Laceydog i am huge Lupone fan and i have to agree. While Lupone does have a great voice bernadette's is better. also i feel that lupone is beginning to rest on her name while peters is still looking for better projects and challanging her self.

  • its fasinating to go through each one and see what they bring to it i think that patti lupone the best female singing it and raul esparza the best male singing what do you think?

  • I think berney is better, not even lupone can match berney here

  • @kikay2493 amen.

  • @kikay2493 I agree. I love LuPone more than chocolate, but Bernadette definitely corners the market on this song in my opinion. Her raw vocal quality just sends the song to where it needs to be. Raw, unsophisticated, and beautiful. So accessible.

  • @EricMChicago Well Bernadette has the perfect voice for Sondheim.

  • there are few actresses that can do stephen sondhiem justice. she and patti lupone thrive on sondhiem in my opinion

  • Amen.

  • Shes Just Amazing

  • beautifully done i just think theres somethign abiut a man delivering this song that gives it that power

  • I'm still reeling from the amazingness of the Tony performance for the Company Revival (the Revival Bobby sang this), so I would say it doesn't feel....right? I think it might just be that I prefer a guy singing it...it seems like there's more of a powerful emotion that way.....BUT I LOVE BERNADETTE, DON'T GET ME WRONG!! She's amazing at everything!!!! (ESPECIALLY SONDHEIM, COUGHCOUGH)

  • I know, Raul Esparza set the bar so high for any other performers of this song!

  • What you have to realize though is that the revival version is very stripped down music wise. This arrangement is a bit closer to the original score.

  • Bernadette out of her depth? Singing a Sondheim song? Can you tell us where exactly you think she is out of her depth in this performance? Her phrasing is even better than in the version they recorded for the album...

  • true. the heart!!!!!!! just can't get over it.

  • jesus

  • WHERE?!

  • Comment removed

  • That wasn't necessary.

  • gorgeous , beautiful, splendid and amazing

  • Oh my gosh! this is so spectacular! I have never heard it sung with so much power and with so much emotion and feeling. I don't quite understand the flash dance moves she's got going on near the end, but who cares? Bravo Ms. Peters. You blow any man out of the water.

  • Bernadette sit in your chair...you bet....Being alive....you wouldn't have to ask twice....

  • I can't even believe how incredible she is. Bernadette is my favourite for ever.

  • Bernadette's emotional interpretation here is absolutely beautiful; she really ACTS the song. But as far as sheer vocal brilliance goes, Patti LuPone knocks this one out of the park.

  • Kill the person who arranged this. But great singing!

  • Oh my gosh, I totally agree. Horrible arrangment. It shouldn't overpower the soloist so much. Plus, it was totally cheasy.

  • I love this song. Bernadette is the best <3

  • that was really good :o

  • what key is this in?

  • i feel that bernadette's performance is a bit more raw, giving it a bit of vulnerability, that is perfect for this song!

  • Yeah I just heard about patti or really just payed attention to her not until sweeny todd the new one she is good to but I can just die for Bernadette if you know what I mean.

  • Patti Lupone and Bernadette are two different voices. I'll tell you this. I love Bernadette Peters just a bit more, but Lupone is fantastic too.

  • well deserved ovation!

  • i don't know - i think Patti Lupone can take her on this one. see the Sondheim celebration @ Carnegie Hall

  • Patti may be better vocally, but in my opinion, Bernadette shows more emotion than anyone...

  • Bernadette Peters can do no wrong! She is a true diva.

  • she's AMAZING

  • Inspirational...Don't Give Up

  • DAMN what a belt starting at 1:40!

  • this woman sings her adorable little butt off... you are wonderful, Bernadette.

  • damn her hair is as big as her head lol

    incredible performance

  • idk why but she sang this song with the most emotion and y dose the aduinice love it when SHE sings it so much....it has mad feeling in it..was this like right after she got married or somthing

  • CherryPepsi312 - it's called ACTING.

  • they both have their own unique ups singing this song...

I'd say they're tied... they're both amazing artists...

  • I can not think of a more emotionally felt moment than each time I hear my Broadway Baby, Bernadette, sing this song! Amazing!

  • this song makes me cry.

  • Me too. But it's not like a sad-crying, it's a moving-crying. And after listening to it for so many times, I got over my fear of commitment and started dating again and subsequently fell in love. Thank you, Mr. Sondheim and Ms. Peters.

  • no one does sondheim the way this goddess does sondheim.

  • This is definitely one of my favorites! Thanks so much for the post!!! :)

  • A well-deserved standing ovation...if only I was there for it!!

  • I love watching performers having fun...

  • ...

    *standing ovation*

  • When is this from?

  • the concert at Royal Festival Hall London, 1998. theres a video of this i almost got my hands on the dvd!

  • This is from Company by Sondheim.

  • this to me is like THE song to hear her sing! id die to hear this!
