Paul, thanks for the clarification (I posted the same a couple years ago) and the memory detail. I didn't know you actually took the video over to them. For an unknown band to get on by cold submission is something to be really proud of--you did a wonderful job with this video. And yes, not a week goes by that I don't think how this world would be a lot funnier, a lot smarter, with Don among us.
In actual truth this did NOT make it on MTV by way of the Basement Tapes- It was a cold submission- addressed to the Pres of MTV networks- I know, I hand carried it into MTV. From there it made "medium rotation" -MTV was playing videos on something closer to a radio format at the time. I'm the director of the video and knew Don since I was 12. There is not a week that goes by that I would have appreciated Don's take on something or other. He really was a special guy.
I remember Don well when he and Ann Walsh were The Marys and I worked at Blackwater Books. He used to wheel his baby daughter past the book store every morning and when the weather was fine we would sit out under the awning and watch the world go by together.
He was such a rare talent and a lovely man. He adored his child and was more proud of her than all of the songs he wrote.
I still play my Marys tape. It reminds me of the Hoboken I loved.
I am don brodys daughter. I now that he was a man that had a lot of people that cared about him. The only thing I wish I could have sone was known him better since he was my father
I managed to find "NY Beat" on vinyl years ago a compilation that featured this song. Listened to it, Loved it and quickly bought the EP on ebay and love that as well. Just wish there was more to find. My condolences to anyone who knew them.
What an awesome find. Was looking up stuff about my old friend Don Brody and came across this video (we worked at the same record company in the 80s, Greenworld Records). I haven't seen this in over 20 years. Don was such a great guy, was an honor to know him.
I once saw this video on a VHS tape I had of 120 Minutes I borrowed from someone.
I liked the song because of the reggae beat. I had actually found your vinyl EP used in a shop and bought it. Live It Up was a little longer NO? Anyway, nice to see someone put this up. Just the little things mean a lot.
An old friend posted this video, and it's the only one COL ever had. Sad, but true. MTV was never the same. Commercials, game shows, and reality schwag. Remember when it was only music?
I think you're right on it being the only video they put out. It made it on MTV by way of the Basement Tapes competition. My brother was the lead singer. Much appreciation to the person who posted this. And yes, MTV blows these days.
Hi, I'm the drummer and I put this video up, taking it from a VCR copy of the original, and transferring that to digital. Someone else has had a version of it up for a long time, evidently having recorded it off of the TV, since you can see the MTV tag. By the way, I'm curious why you say it won the Basement Tapes competition. It didn't. We submitted it to MTV unsolicited, and they decided to put it in light rotation for about 6 weeks.
philosophyjo - I said it made it on MTV by way of the Basement Tapes competition, didn't say they(you) won. Just a proud sister, didn't mean to imply anything incorrect. Sorry for the confusion.
You guys did a great job on this song. I was in my late teens when I heard this and I am 41 now and this great song has been stuck in my head the whole time. The lyrics are great. Just to let you know many people appreciated your music. Thanks
No, I'm an unknown, haha. Just a guy in Connecticut who likes good music. I first heard it on 120 Minutes. I assumed that the band would take off. Some horrible bands make it big and some good ones don't. Who knows.

This seems rather cool... It definitely reflects 1986.

Glad you liked it and remembered it.
No, "Live It Up" is the same length on the EP and video.

Thanks. We don't have a CD, yet, but we are working on it. But we do still have vinyl!

If you ever do a CD of the album, sign me up for a copy.
Don was a very dear friend of mine from college and I caught COL whenever they played in Kent.

Even better that you are just an "unknown."
I know how much our friends liked us. I was hoping the band would take off, too, but we needed a lot more unknown people like you.
You're special!

Good stuff! I wanna know where the posting person found this??? And is there more to be found?
bobbifleckman 4 years ago
Wow, I'm so glad this got posted. Thanks! The New Amsterdam Brewery never looked so good, and Don Brody's voice is amazing.
