envelopes containing cash - 60,000yen (or about $600), altho only 30,000yen goes directly to the wrestler. 5,000yen is kept for expenses and the other 25,000yen is saved in a fund for the wrestler to pay his year-end taxes. The money is from the sponsors that pay for the banner ads that circle the ring before a match. No TV commercials on NHK.

I'm actually not a fan - I think he has a big chip on his shoulder - a lot of unearned arrogance. But he is starting to be more consistent and many Japanese will tell you that he is the best hope in the near future for a new Japanese yokozuna. We'll see....

Well, good start for Kotooshu. He looked good that match. Hopefully he does well in this basho.
