Yep, I admit it's the worst paint job I've ever seen. If my classic car got a paint job like that, I would either demand a respray or my money back! It seems to be common on cars from those days, because of water-based paint. They call it "sinaasappelhuid" in Dutch, which means the same as orange peel.
Anyway, the Vento never sold that well and this commercial wasn't really helpful ;-) The same car with a hatchback (Golf) was one of the best selling cars in the European market, though.
It was only in the European market that the so called vento flopped. In the American, South African and Australian market, the Jetta(as it is supposed to be called) did exceptionally well. It outsold the Golf and still does.
That's because in those markets, the demand for compact cars with a boot lid (sedans) is higher than hatchbacks in the same segment. In Europe, compact sedans are considered dull and impractical and are usually bought by elderly people. Also, for some stupid marketing reason the car was called Jetta up till 1992, then renamed after each model change: Vento, then Bora (1998) and Jetta again since 2005.
@matramurena It's predecessor the Jetta MKII wasn;t that succesfull either. Small sedan's weren't popular back then, and still aren't. (Look at the Skoda Fabia sedan, for example.)

The Jetta was designed for americans. Hatchbacks weren't popular in North America so VW made the sedan (Jetta)
