Am sitting at home argueing with my wife and stepdaughter. Was driving home today and thought of the Replacements, the parties in uptown and growing up in the Twin Cities. Listening to these guys was such a great escape! Seemed like the music back then at the clubs, houses, ets was always GREAT! Thank you Paul and the gang for such great memories and letting me escape from this domestic nightmare! (actually it ain't so bad.....)
it's funny that the DARE song is in the related videos. nope, DARE and the replacements are pretty much the opposite of related. i wonder what paul would think.
It would be great for them to do a reunion show, id fly cross country for that shit..same with husker du, best thing we can get are cover bands...better than nothing i guess
Heckfarr--that is an awesome tale. And sounds like Paul. I saw them in Cleveland, and they were pretty hammered. I've seen some bands lit before, and they tended to suck. But not Paul and the boys. They lit it up. In fact, I think they may have been better than when I saw them before (Columbus or Pittsburgh? Maybe Ithaca?). Though, it did cause a bit of a ruckus when Paul crashed into the drum kit, a beer revived him...
This tune still rings in my mind from time to time, especially when I want to feel happy. Thank you The Replacements. Your music surely sheer me up a lot.
@andrewburton12345678 Having actually had bacon and cigarettes for dinner more than once in college, I can attest that it is an entirely unreal dinner. Unless you eat a LOT of bacon, and add ample amounts of beer. (Of course, then I found out that the lyrics are actually "fingernails, cigarettes, a lousy dinner." Whoops.)
The Replacements was the first show I saw when I got to college. They played The Living Room in Providence, RI in 1985 on the Tim tour. Bob Stinson, crazy antics, and loud as a motherf*cker. I became a big fan after that.
A great song but not the best from the greatest band and record ever made. I guess I would rank Unsatisfied and Answering Machine a little higher from that record but really what difference does it make? I would put this equal to Sixteen Blue. Wow 105,000 views that is like an all-time record views for a Replacements song.
@11xzxzxz Totally love Answering Machine too; particularly for it's lyrics that totally encapsulate yearning and bitter disappointment so poignantly - however, dunno if I can rank one above the other - love both of those songs equally but for different reasons. Regardless, the 'Mats will FOR EVER rock in my book and I'm still pissed that they never made it to Australia!
@COUSINCAT Yeah I never saw them .. just Paul ..they were on their way to Australia and some nasty waitress in the sky was giving them lip and not enough hip so the drunken boys turned around. Be well down under.
@11xzxzxz Wow, so cool (and totally unexpected!) of you to reply to my comment. Appreciate muchly hearing the story from another 'Mats fan - thanks! Btw have you ever heard Tommy Stinson's album from 2004, 'Village Gorilla Head'? It's brilliant and one of those rare record's where virtually every track's a winner!
@11xzxzxz Duh...I'm such a moron! Only occurred to me later that your 'story' was in fact a ref to that song. Sorry for being such an obtuse dick! Btw, checked out 2 clips on Youtube of Tommy Stinson performing "Not a Moment Too Soon" live (seriously one of my fav songs EVER!) Still amazed at how brilliant his voice is - who'da thunk it! Considering the 'Mats never made it to Aus, you'd reckon the least Tommy could do is tour here! Nice speaking with you.
@COUSINCAT Yeah I was just listening to not a moment too soon and it's great. I must admit I am still a bigger Paul fan though. Hey don't feel dumb at all most fans would have missed it I supposed. And lines like There days I wish I'd never met you And days I wish there were more of you are excellent but I see the Paul influence. It's hard to know. Not trying to down Tommy but Paul wrote most of the great songs with the Replacements though the band helped interpret them. Oh I could be wrong .. how dumb am I?
@11xzxzxz Certainly don't dispute that Paul Westerberg's the obvious 'Mats' genious, (and yeah, he's my fav too!), however, think Tommy deserves kudos for his amazing transition from bratty teen to amazing lead performer in his own right!

Saw them in Athens, Georgia at the Georgia Theater. They opened w/ this tune and some idiot threw beer at Paul. He dropped his Les Paul, jumped into the crowd and beat hell out of that moron. He climbed back onstage and they played for 2 more hours.
@heckfarr That's awesome! If it were some other rock stars (who shall go nameless, but one rhymes with asshole), they would bitch and moan and quit. Love the Mats!
@heckfarr I was at that show too!! The band never stopped playing while Paul took care of the jerk. I saw them 3 times, and the Athens show was the best of them all.

@lyonslaforet and @eartant. I could be wrong, but I believe that's Westerberg on the mandolin in this song. Buck definitely played the guitar. You can hear his distinctive whine/twang.
I love the British influence here. :)

@lyonslaforet and @eartant. I could be wrong, but I believe that's Westerberg on the mandolin in this song. Buck definitely played the guitar. You can hear his distinctive whine/twang.
joshualavin 1 year ago
@joshualavin You're correct, at least according to the liner notes. "Paul on 12-string electric, mandolin; Chris, tambourine; Pete Buck, guitar solo"

Peter Buck from R.E.M. played extra guitar on this song and you can hear his unique playing!

@lyonslaforet Actually he played mandolin, which gives it such a signature sound.
