He was also a very clever satirist. In "looking-Glass" he parodied William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli as the lion and the unicon respectively. The lion and the unicorn on the Queen's Coat of Arms, that is.
I am IN LOVE with Lewis Carroll. I don't care what anyone says. He was so intelligent, gentlemanly and very beautiful in appearance. How attractive can you get? They don't make gentlemen like him, any more, do they?
Hehe...that's very good. Carroll's verse is really very good and very funny. My Favourite is The Three Voices with illustrations by A.B.Frost - hilarious! And The Snark..and..and....all of em! Good reading too!
Oh, i cant believe how much this poem describes the actual situation - it does not really matter when it was written, it is still tru to this day! Thank you for sharing this Drew, very interesting and wonderfully read by you :)
Oh, Drew, there are somany poets i would like to tell you about! Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Cecilia Meireles, Monica Montoro... it is a pity that many times the poetry gets lost in translation :)
Well, why don't you read some? 8) Enlighten us. Include it in part of your regular vlogs. I don't think anyone would be overly critical of you if you're not the best poet in Brazil.
The Brazilians I have read are in the realm of prose fiction: Jorge Amado, Darcy Penteado (also a controversial artist), Adolfo Caminha, and Machado de Assis.
These made some poetry but are mostly a story tellers...how do you say that...novelists? :) Graciliano Ramos wrote Grande Sertão: Veredas and it is a strong classic here. Machado de Assis is one of my favorites by far! :) thanks for your comment, i am happy to know you know so much about my culture! :D
Machado de Assis is one of the best realists I have even read. Remarkably unpredictable. He is not well known in the United States, but he is available in English, thanks to the Oxford University Press in Great Britain.
I have friends in Curitibo and I know some people in Bahia. Muita obrigado

In a way, he was a sort of cultural pathologist. I haven't read Looking-glass in a long time, so I don't recall the lion and unicorn scene.

I suppose if you looked around, you could find a gentleman who likes real poetry. They are pretty rare at your age though.

Your pronunciation of the word "adieu" clearly tells us that you are no Frenchman.
BeatBuddy 4 years ago
Yep, I'm French in name only. I grew up in central Maine with nobody French to speak to even though the family on fathers side are all Quebecois.
Amiduffer 4 years ago
Central, as in Sabego?
BeatBuddy 4 years ago
No, Madison, Sebego is in southern Maine.

Do you know of any Brazilian poets we should be exposed to?
Thanks for the complement. It was funny when I first laid eyes on it. More good stuff coming up!
