  • whats the name of this song and does it have a tab or a music sheet i could learn it from?

  • @albalina0219 It was written by John Barry specifically for the film (my title was just a joke, of course). In 1997, it was re-issued on a CD, with extra tracks. The concert track is simply called "Romance For Guitar And Orchestra".

If you live in Europe or The States, you should be able to obtain it through Amazon.

However - sheet music? THAT could be tricky...

  • The film was based on Desmond Cory's novel. When asked about the movie, Cory, a man who was not known for disparaging anybody else's work, commented that "he enjoyed the music". Frankly, they butchered his novel - thank heavens for John Barry who at least translated the novel to music far better than they did to screen.

  • Rest in peace John Barry. You'll always be the greatest.

  • This is the Classic...GREAT SCORE....BAD FILM!!!!

  • Superb music, underated movie.

  • Without a doubt, Bryan Forbes's worst film. But that doesn't diminish the quality of Whistle Down the Wind, Seance on a Wet Afternoon, King Rat and The Wrong Box.

    John Barry Prendergast, RIP.

  • R.I.P JB

  • This is one of my very favourite movies, of course this scene is fantastic but the rest is worth watching too. To those who didn't understand and say the action is nonsense : This is cinema, time is different than in the reality so these 15 minutes actually represent an hour or two during which the concert and the robbery take place.

  • @torchsonglover - Hmmm! But that would only work if the music kept jumping FORWARD every time we switch locations - which would RUIN the effect. As it stands, the concert piece becomes a SOUNDTRACK for the robbery. It's just a shame that it is so impractical. Then again, so is the rest of the piece (see my 6 points, in the info panel). However, Barry's music is GREAT and taken as a FANTASY - the sequence is a CLASSIC. And nice to SEE Mr Barry, conducting.

  • Ok so a lot of you have slated this movie and say the music is all its good for and yes the music is stunning and as a whole this movie is tosh.......however i have always loved this scene. I think its just put togther well with the climb and the concert and cutting between to two. I have looked to buy this movie for an age just for this scene and now i can enjoy it here so thankyou

  • I'm just glad you've uploaded it. Terrible movie, Forbes was never much of a director and nepotism?! His wife was in everything!, but Barry's score is brilliant. Shame Caine, at the top of his game back then, chose so unwisely.

  • True! Forbes (with the ever-present Nanette) worked with Barry a lot. Which was wise - because even with THIS tosh, Barry always gave it his ALL!

  • I think the only Forbes films I actually enjoy are Whistle Down The Wind (no nepotism!) The Wrong Box (no one can mess up too much with a cast like that) and to a lesser extent The Stepford Wives

  • ...and he DID write the screenplay for The League Of Gentlemen - perhaps we're being too hard on him!

  • Yeah but then he muffed it by casting himself and Nanette in it ;] hehe

  • There's a bit (filmed at the back of the studio) where the editor goofed up - I can't remember the details, but it's where something is being removed or put back into a car's boot - and the shots are the wrong way round.

I noticed this years ago, but I just checked IMDb and it's not in their goofs section for the movie. But I'm SURE I'm right.

Anyhow, we can't blame Bryan for THAT one, as he didn't direct or edit it!

    And now my dinner beckons...!

  • Sure the scene has ridiculous parts (made in 1968) but you can't deny the music is beautiful.

  • Oh sure! The only reason I POSTED it was for the music - and a rare chance to see one of my Five All-Time Heroes - Mr John Barry. Plus, one has to admire Forbes' use of the music to counterpoint the action - it's just that the action is NONSENSE! Oh, and if you were wondering about the other four - in no particular order, Kenny Everett, Buddy Rich, Dudley Moore and Burt Bacharach (I have diverse tastes!)
