In 1976 I was in barber college and I saw Bowie with this hair style on his Bowie Pinups album cover. a space alien couple . I was obsessed with this look so cut my hair into this style ,and dyed it red.
I wanted to experience a little of what a space alien would feel like on Earth.
Im straight but some people thought I looked gay. if that had bothered me I would have never gone into hair Styling. lol Most people were Shocked and thats the response I was looking for..so Not boring.
Actually back in '72 there were fewer issues being gay, bi, or whatever. Back then, we were more open-minded and experimental with new ways of loving. It is much worse today - religion didn't used to be fundamentalist literalism either. All this is, quite sadly, new.
The best hairstyle ever invented, who thought this up? it looks like fox fur. I've never heard who the hairstylist was who did this amazing doo. And not easy to replicate. The makeup on the skull like face, such stage presence. 37 years ago folks.
@paisleyization Actually I had a sunday school teacher once who seemed to be able to replicate the style without much difficulty. Although I'm sure it was not intentional...
Well what can i say apart from that! David bowie is an amazing artist in the greatest possible sense! He writes and performs like he was given a gift from the gods! And im no gay! But even i think that he gets better looking the older he gets! :)
@deathbypowerglove I remember Oasis saying something similiar about the Beatles, lol, same shit different band, and It'll end the same way, with Gaga in the bargain bin
I have rediscovered Bowie just recently. I saw his Ziggy Stardust Concert in August of 1972 at the Rainbow Theatre in London with my cousin and girlfriend, when I was 21 years old. We sort of had an "email reunion" and have been emailing back and forth most of the day recalling this amazing concert. Here we are almost 40 years later, appreciating Bowie's amazing talent! His music will always touch me in a way few musicians have.
Bowie has been sooo influential, so creative and groundbreaking. he even used Klaus Nomi as a backup singer for an appearance on SNL, and Nomi was about as weird as you could get even in the early '80's.
I bought this album on cassette when I was ten years old, because it looked interesting. I didn't even know that Ziggy was David Bowie. It helped to define who I am today. It's worth noting that David Bowie was standing up for androgeny, bisexuality and gay pride in 1972 - a time in America when being openly bi or gay was risking your life. I'm straight myself, but having Ziggy Stardust as a part of my development made me a more enlightened, empathetic kind of straight. And a lot cooler.
@riderpoet i was first a fan of Bowies at that age too from no ones influence apart from he looked so unique, i was intrigued and ultimately hooked! He is and will always be a pure genius.
the bass in this song is kick ass!! Remember getting off on it when i was about 10! 72 vintage myself, been listening to this since i could walk/talk (thanx Mum!) Fav song of all time, & maybe 'wild is the wind'!

The look on Bowies face, as he toys around with the moment. That kind of confidence is what allows a man to dress like that, And still be bad ass.

no words to describe it...dynamics....tone....timing....off the hook
